granted, there arent as many women ratio-wise as men that enjoy competitive atmospheres, but that is more than just them being female, thats societal/cultural pressures telling them what they should and should not like because of their gender, which thankfully more and more girls these days have stopped giving a **** about what "society" says they should act like, and instead just at like whatever they want.

I can relate to being a little pvp adverse. I was a such a player for a long time. Pvp was something I wouldn't actively seek out. However, after going on a few roams in a group I found it was more enjoyable. The social aspect of a fleet was certainly more enjoyable than being solo.

Male banter in chat doesn't bother me to much. It really comes out in pvp. I can see how it would be annoying to some other women. There was a time when it would have bothered me as well. I guess I've just become accustomed to it over the years o playing online games. As long as hey aren't being too vulgar or detailing ways they'd like to copulate with me (or anyone else for that matter) then they won't risk getting the gag or kick. Or me complaining in TS and tossing them on block.

The real question is, why do we need to attract women? Let eve evolve in the way that is best for the game, and let it attract who it attracts. The fact that a video game doesn't appeal to a certain segment of the population isn't an issue, just a fact.

I'd be delighted for EVE to be in second place to WoW.

I'm pretty appalled that EVE only having 4% female players out of 500k seems to be just accepted.

If I were CCP I'd set a target of turning that 4% into a 10%, and making that 500k into a 530k. The sub money that female player pay spends just as good as that paid by men, and writing off half the planet from your potential customer base doesn't feel like good business or good ethics.

I don't think 10% is unthinkably ambitious in a world where ~50% of gamers are women. Anyone who thinks having boobs "naturally" makes someone unsuitable for EVE is just an idiot.


Side note: I have worked in workplaces that were virtually all female and in ones which were virtually all male. Both were pretty toxic. (Anyone who thinks that women are delicate flowers who can't stand treachery, politics, metagaming and backstabbing should spend some time in an all-female workplace btw). Now I work in a place with a pretty even balance; it's far better.

No.

My sis plays an Arcane mage in WoW. Highest DPS class in the game. She literally blows the bosses up.

I try to get her to go into PvP battlegrounds (to blow chunks out of players -- when the cries are KILL THE ARCANE!!! Even before me as a healer...oh, yeah me want sis there!). AV maybe (end boss). IoC maybe (end boss). Anything else...she'll queue right back into LFR for the nth time instead.

No interest. Boss killing is more entertaining to her (bigger DPS numbers...she was thrilled yesterday critting the boss for over 1,000,000 damage. Can't get those numbers against players with resilience). It's also much better than dealing with a snot nosed bratty kid (PvPers and their mouth ensures even less will play).

So in EvE terms: if she can't shoot down Titans 10x or so a day, she's not interested. She's used to taking the bosses down with the biggest DPS numbers. Anything else is boring.

Only thing in EvE remotely that can fit, isn't even PvP, and that Incursions (a space raid). Pointless.

Science fiction just isn't the most appealing of genres to women. Why that is is really difficult to say, but for any science fiction TV series, movie, or video game most of the fans are men.
Is it right? No, probably not, but I don't think it's necessarily anybody's fault either. It's probably a sociological thing.

Women like to have goals and they like competition, just not the same goals and same kind of competition. Women tend to be very good collaborators with one another. my girlfriend is pretty cool in that she scams people in Jita and awoxxes neckbeard carebear corps with a little help from vocaroo

not interested whatsoever in the rest of the game though, and i've yet to meet a single female IRL who was even remotely interested in internet spaceships

i'd marry her but i can't figure out how to apply a plex to her for the transfer

My Wife (9 year vet of MMOs, DAoC, LoTR, WAR) tried Eve and went - BORING!
She wants action, no waiting around, fights that last more than 10 seconds, no grind, and avatar play, pink armour and a ship that is coloured pink.
So I'm thinking so sort of first person fighter, and Avatar play like exploring stations and killing stuff, bars and gambling too (for those that scream this is about ships not space barbies, you want GiRL to play or not?).
Trust me, EvE would be a lot more fun with girls like her playing :)

I can't work it out either. I don't give a **** what gender anyone who plays this game is; sometimes I can't tell by name or portrait, and I don't bother asking, because it just doesn't matter to me. The number of women playing this game wouldn't bother me either, as long as it could be guaranteed that they were avoiding EVE for gameplay reasons, and not for sexist-neckbeard-mixture-of-wonder-and-hatred reasons. I don't think that can be guaranteed, so it looks as though there may be a problem.

That playstyle is hardly unique to women ^^

Personally, I like sitting looking at spreadsheets in space.....which may be either a female or a male trait, or...maybe, just a geeky trait :p

Thats not to say I wouldnt love bars, gambling, and being able to punch my market rivals on the nose (ingame) of course!

That's really my biggest gripe about this game, is a lot of the time I'm just waiting around for **** to happen.
Obviously there's a lot I can do to alleviate this, but yeah.

b) How can we, a bunch of sci-fiction addicted hyper-aggressive males with spastic trigger fingers and/or mining/missioning Carebears who enjoy repeated repetition while dwelling in our parents' basement, help CCP to increase sub numbers by attracting female players to EVE?

I, for one, am at a loss. Especially after my wife laughed when I asked for suggestions.



A couple years ago I unplugged my headphones once so I could hear the FC talking while I went to the other side of the room to do something (we were defending a cyno jammer pos and the bad guys aka GEWNS! hadn't showed up yet).

One of the people in fleet started talking, and it was a girl (or a man with testosterone deficiency lol). My wife heard a FEMALE voice coming out of my computer's speakers and I spent the next week explaining to her how not only was I not "hitting that" but that I don't even know it "that" was hittable in the 1st place.

Based on that i don't think EVE needs more women.

I have been an EVE player for quite some time, and everyone who has taken the time will see that i a) Dont PVP and b) Dont live in 0.0 anymore.

The PVP (blowing up other players) aspect of the game is something i dont directly interact with. But i will cheer when a corp member gets on a nice kill mail (or when a young player comes and is really proud because they got their first kill) and i will encourage people to PVP.
When it comes to 0.0.. Been there, done that, i got fed up with it and retired.

But for many people these two things is the only "competition" and "challenges" EVE can offer.

I find it a challenge to recruit people, to try and help run a corp and keep the drama as low as possible, defending corp members from outside drama (that they normally are the cause off by blowing someone up Lol ), getting contacts in other alliances/corps and get respect both for my self and the corp as a whole.
Im sure there are more i cant think about right now since i just woke up Smile

These things is not something you can point and say "Yea we did that!" and people will go "Thats so cool!", and even tho if it would be "nice" to get recognition like that, that people only have to look at your corp/alliance name and they know who you are, its not my goal.
Basically what im saying is...There are ways to "compete" in EVE that does not directly have anything to do with PVP, diplomacy is a huge one here and i think there is a reason that so many female EVE players end up in this role or recruitment, even if (from my experience) most female EVE players will PVP just as much, if not more, then the male EVE players.
