I seemed to have fixed mine. My brother went out of town, I turned off his computer which is connected via hard wire to the modem while mine is wireless (soon to be hard wired when a 50' cable arrives, hopefully thats a better fix). It might be something to do with the awful cable gateway Comcast supplies in my case, but he had a torrent client open with one file finished and the rest not active at all. It would close within 5 min every time recently, and completely went away once I shut his computer down. Hopefully this can help someone else out or point them in the right direction.

I've been using this machine to play EVE for over a year without problems. In the last week, I am getting a double "socket closed" error every 10min - 2 hours. I run 4 clients at the same time, yet every socket error happens to the same toon.

I've also noticed that settings for that specific toon are not saved on exit. Example, if I open the directional scanner and then log off, when I log back in then I need to set up the client interface again. On the other toons running, the interface remains the way I left it.

I'm not sure if the two are related? I've cleared cache and all the normal things we do when trying to fix things.

Anybody getting this I strongly urge you to use the Pingplotter instructions found here (http://support.eveonline.com/Pages/KB/Article.aspx?id=386) as this will show better where it is tripping up rather than relying on a tracert pass which may check out ok but then drop you in Eve when a piece of hardware has a flutter.

This is not always down to your ISP or to CCP but sometimes one of the backbone providers between the two. I had a similar "issue" earlier in the year which my ISP was aware of for connections going to game servers in America but not with regard to CCP's servers in London. However it did appear to be a server that "redirected" traffic in London so both my traffic and traffic to America was affected.

I passed the pingplotter information both to CCP and my ISP (via their forums) and a few days later the problem went away. As I said in the original post/thread about this on here I like to feel my ISP and a CCP server/network admin took the backbone provider to a dodgy bit of East London and threatened to leave him there unless it was fixed pronto!

At one point I used to get the socket closed problem. It came and went over a period of some months back in 2009 / into 2010.
I could not figure out the problem. Eventually it went away and for the past year / 2 years I have not had the problem once.
People seem to have them all over the world, all sorts of ISP`s.

Herr Hammer Draken wrote:
I just started getting them as well. Just this last week. Before that I would get a disconnect only once per maybe 30 hours of game play time. But this last week once every hour or so. All socket closed errors.

Another point not sure if it makes any difference or not. But every single socket closed disconnect happens when I have a session change. ALWAYS during a session change. I never had a disconnect associated with anything else ever.
That makes me think it is something in the CCP server that causes it.

In fact let me go one step further and suggest it is because of the recent changes CCP made to local.
When ever I do a session change the computer has to load a new local. I think something CCP did to local is causing it to hang and or the socket closed error is mis diagnosing the problem.

Further I never had a disconnect when I undock. While that is a session change it does not involve loading a new local.
Only Session changes that involve a new local cause my socket closed errors.

I have had socket closed during pve, pvp, jumping, sitting in station, all aspects of eve sometimes even idle in space for a few minutes.

I also noticed between patches around dominion, tyrannis onwards the socket closes got worse for a time, then better eventually going away completely.

I hope this helps somebody out there: (this was just my personal experience, along with some conjecture)

I never hard the socket closed problem until recently. Turns out my network adapter (the on board gigabit one that came with my motherboard) was starting to die. It would drop packets 50% of the time and was getting worse as time went on.

So, spent $10 on a PCI gigabit network card and the whole problem went away.

My guess is the "socket closed" problem is actually ISP / network related. I.e its not CCP, its the users network connection craps out for various reasons and unfortunately CCP has a terrible error message.

It should be changed from "socket closed" to "network connection with the Eve server was lost" ...

So really, CCP fails at usability here. As for the users effected by this ... start doing some network diagnostics and see whats up. If you are connecting over Wifi or have an old network adapter or a crappy ISP ... I'd be willing to bet that is the source of the problem.

My 2 cents.

OK, to be honest, I have not read any of the other post in depth.

To my point for this "the socket is closed" error message.
First, we must understand what is a socket. It is a 2 part number that consists of your IP address and a port number.
EX: 192.168.*.*:65490 (the two are seperated by a colon and the port number used here I made up)

Now, if a socket is being closed that means something is closing it , obviously. This could be anything from a router, firewall and or ISP.

The fact that it works on a VPN flawlessly leads me to believe it is something to do with a combination firewall and the router.

A VPN sets up whats similar to a LAN but over the internet. It is dedicated and nothing can interfere with it on a normal bases. It bypasses firewalls and router firewalls(port forwarding and triggering).

The fact that everything else is working on the internet leads me to believe it has to be the firewall and/or the router.

Simple fix is to manually add the port number or the program to be allowed access no matter what through both the firewall and the router. I am not sure if EVE uses a static port number or if it is constantly changing upon restart.

Also, if you use programs like peerblock *cough, cough* it can block CCPs IP addresses and ports.

As another note, I have not seen this message as of yet. The first thing I did was added a port triggering to my router to allow access no matter what and added an exception to my firewall... no, wait, scratch that. I don't run a firewall or anti-virus currently. Yea, I'm pretty ballsy... Shaddap!

Any type of antivirus program that uses driver based filtering has the potential to start doing something like this out of the blue. The first one that comes to mind is Norton, next is Kaspersky. I have seen AVG do something like this with other programs but I can't remember if they use driver based filtering or not. For this, you need to completely remove by using removal tools for the antivirus and then reinstall from scratch or use a different AV software.

I have not seen any issues with Microsoft Security Essentials as of yet with symptoms such as this.

Thanks but I don't run anti-virus or firewall. Turn them both off.

Plus, I have tired from 2 different countries on 2 different machines in the past 2 days. It HAS to be CCP.

This might be an odd question but do you happen to know if the ISPs use fiber optic lines anywhere on their networks? Yes, you can still have cable to the home but have fiber optic lines up the way.

There was another thread where someone had this same problem with fiber optic line to the home. I also have a ally and corp mate that have this same issue and they both have fiber optic lines.

Seriously people can you stop pointing towards our ISP when people from all over the world with different ISP are facing the same problem , right now my hometown adn my house near my college are using thte same ISP and in my college house I keep getting this same problem whereas in ym hometown hosue it is fine. And they are both from he same ISP . Yes it could be something with location but then explain why other games or internet browsing are not affected? CCP fix this problem at 4th of December

It's not CCP.

A) It works through a VPN which is a virtual network connected directly to CCPs servers with no outside interference.
B) It's is not affecting everyone including myself.
C)I have seen my roommate get this same message on 2 of the 4 multibox clients running on the same computer off the same router as I am.

Based on these 3 pieces of data that everyone seems to ignore, it is not CCP. My earlier post was for diagnostics purposes. I am noticing clients with ISPs that use fiber optic lines in there infrastructures regardless if they are cable, DSL or what not are having this issue the most. Or, at least that is where the data is leading me. We need more information on what exactly is causing this issue and a way to reproduce the issue to determine a fix.

I've also noticed another valid point brought up earlier as I am typing this... The test servers work fine and they are running various test versions of Retribution. Maybe CCP realized what the issue is and fixed it. It doesn't mean it was on CCPs side, it just means they figured out where the problem is and took initiative to work around it since the actual fix was going to take forever and completely out of their control maybe? Not stating facts, Just brainstorming aloud and looking for positive feedback and thoughts.

I say wait until after December 4th to see if that resolves it. I just wish CCP would be able to shed more light on this issue.

You have a good point about the fiber optics since in my college house we use fiber optics with faster internet but my hometown doesn't use it and has a slower internet connection but a stable one at that for EVE. If CCp solved this problem in the next expansion (fingers crossed) then should have come here and respond to us about it.

However either way although it is not completely CCP fault and if it's fiber optics that is affecting then we can't blame our ISP either I mean wat do u expect them to do pull out all the fiber optics cable jsut because of one game? Which shows that it is CCP who is suppose to be fixing this [problem not ISP so t the end of the day I'll still say it's CCP fault that we keep getting this problem.

Getting socket issue about every 1 or 2 min tonight.

Not a tech or IT type person but from the numerous posts I've read tonight on the forums regarding this socket issue....
VPN is not working for everyone
I have not changed my ISP or anything on my computer since yesterday.... also I don't think my ISP made sudden changes.

My internet works fine until I try and play EVE tonight....
Sometimes when I get socket error it's also doing something to cause me to lose internet connection for a minute....
Then internet connectivity comes back on it's own and stays stable until I try and play eve and get another socket error.

I wonder if it its just simple bandwidth allocation. The faster your connection, the more bandwidth to share between apps and other computers on the network. Depending on the connection type, some apps get less than optimal bandwidth to run stable. Whenever you do something in game that overloads the allocation limit, the socket "collapses" on its self and closes. It kind of like the mass restriction on wormholes, you put too much mass through it and it will eventually collapse. The higher the wormhole class or "bandwidth" the more stable it is with higher amounts of traffic.

All of this is why I suggested CCP's own article on pingplotter above as it will regularly check the route and you can see where the issue is. Had a couple of "socket closed" tonight and already pingplotter is showing heavy packet losses (upwards of 30%) at an item of equipment assigned to above.net one hop out from CCP's servers.

Until my ISP hands off to the above.net equipment I'm getting a ping time of less than 20ms.

Everyone have already tried ping plotter and submitted to CCP and all they do is tell us what the technical problem is and does'nt tell us if they are gonna fix it or not and this has been going way too long Evil

Can someone create a batch file that has a loop trace route command to tranquility? I would but I am not having this issue.

The purpose of this is to see how the packets react over time instead of at instant moments. This would work best when the socket is closing most often for whoever does this batch file. You do connect inbetween the sockets closing so it will show which routes are working and which are causing the most issues. Copy and paste the results to notepad or whatever and then host on like google docs so we can see what the results are and pick through the data.

This would be some advance networking stuffs.
