Hey Guys Big smile

Thanks for the comments, it's nice to know there's still a sizeable amount of people who care about the health of the forums, for sure.

We're actually in the middle of testing an entirely new forum system with the assistance of our Volunteer team, and we'll more than likely be looking to roll it out somewhere toward the summer Smile

The rollout of these forums is going to include a complete rewrite of the forum rules (relaxing quite a few of them), re-organizing our forum categories and the introduction of a new mandate for ISD in terms of how moderation is carried out, as well as a few other things that the community team will be blogging about in the not too distant future (more than likely soon after Fanfest, which happens in April).

The idea will be to promote more open and direct (but civil) discussion, and give the community a more relaxed place to talk about spaceships P

We'll have more information in the near future <3

So far what has been released about the structure of the new forums is not promising at all. Sorry to have to tell you that.

We're not coming back.

An ISD took risk to try and explain his position/situation, for the benefit of readers.
I have never seen an ISD be so candid and open, or post as long an explanation.
He took great pains to be fair, considerate, factual and offer a are glimpse behind the curtain to the people/players ISD are.

Furthermore, Ive never seen a thread with as many individual ISD respondents as in this one.
Its unprecedented, afaik.

Yet this is how you choose to respond?

At best, you are wasting a unique opportunity to engage on equal ground, as leeway has been allowed here.
Instead you have folded, retreated to reddit, when you had the opportunity HERE to make a stand, and speak your piece, especially as a former CSM.

I sincerely urge you to return, if just to make one final statement on what you see as best for this formats changes.
You have hard-earned weight and gravitas. Apply it here, now. After that, go wherever you wish. o7

Go out with a bang, not like this.

The gloves are off, the field is flat, the rules are waved, here, now.
I am certain you care about this forum, and the community at large, and its future.

Don't waste this chance.

Why am I here now? A sheer coincidence. I was looking for any dev posts about the latest deployment issues and stumbled upon this thread. Cheers!
I asked in an earlier post if someone has made a link which collects all known developer's posts on Reddit... here we have a handy Dev Posts button.

These forums are rigidly organized by category; the Dev Posts feature lets us find any current discussions regardless of category, BUT only for DEV / GM / CSM. Discourse via the Valkyrie forums modernizes some things with a "latest" button, organizing ALL threads regardless of category, And/Or the latest posts in a given category, with good info, like # of Views and Posts. But it takes some digging around to find out what the developers are posting.

This tags roll-up could work for a similar purpose, IF the poster has tagged their posts. And if other posters re-use tag names appropriately.

A link to Badges lets us find avatars & links to all registered developers. But it doesn't show their most recent post.

I found what I was looking for, but it takes a lot of clicks to get there.

:S 5 of the top 10 threads are locked. Not looking promising at all.

edit: I guess those locked threads are because of inactivity. Still not promising, but at least it wasn't a moderation lock.

edit 2: Anyone else feel like discourse forums such as the valk forums are far less organized than traditional forums? No sections and subsections, just a huge pile of rando topics with vague category tags that don't really seem to mean anything. I'm starting to get the feeling that the new forums are going to be yet another case of CCP chasing trends long after they've stopped being relevant, while failing to understand why those trends showed up in the first place.

Thanks for the guidance, but I'm very familiar with all of the forums. Big smile Even the forums before these forums. Cool I had randomly clicked on GD after I found what I wanted. I was just letting everyone know why I was even on the CCP forums at all. haha.

He took a risk goddamnit. A risk.

So much risk. The riskiest. That risk is going to do terrible things.

But he faced it and powered through to write a post anyway.

He's our hero.

Question is do we need organized traditional forums?

Afaik, ISDs are usually required to keep their personal opinions to themselves.

Malcanis, however, merely said "wow", and then ran off to reddit.

He has a chance, here, now, to make his stand.
The rules are waived, the gloves are off.
But instead he has retreated off the field.

That's why I urge him to go out with a bang, rather than an ignominious whimper of "wow".

I think Reddit is popular not because of the lack of moderation

Respectfully, you're wrong. This is the number one reason. Number two is the reply threading that actually allows you to follow a child conversation in a thread without brain explosion.

We get it. CCP doesn't want discussion that looks bad on the product or could be quoted in RL to the detriment of their marketing. However, that is exactly what EVE needs at times. Serious issues and deficiencies get overlooked, censored, and/or ignored, that outright diminish the product experience. The Jita riots of Incarna, okay, lets admit it - the wave of unsubbing, was so intense because CCP had screwed the lid down on criticism and sat on it forever. We were done with the forums. r/EVE flourished after that.

Why am I here now? A sheer coincidence. I was looking for any dev posts about the latest deployment issues and stumbled upon this thread. Cheers!

[Sig censored for direct quoting a Dev from the forums. YMMV]

Id' like everyone to stop actiing as if this is just an EVE thing, many communities made the move to reddit, no need to go over the reasons they've been well covered in this thread.
reddit has it's use, but each community should keep and use their forums.
people claim the very best place to get information in the last couple of years is on reddit but yet here you are,, just by chance seeking information about a product owned by CCP on their official forums, crazy stuff!

you're now looking for this information on 2 different sites, I think that's a bad thing.

I think people just grew up. I don't know what the average EvE player age is, but I bet it is higher then most and is increasing.

There are two kinds of children that play in sandboxes. Those who build castles and those who kick them down. It's a symbiosis.

I'm not sure how the changed forums will go, but they will have to give some power to posters.

Mainly because other sites give that power.

And if you cannot compete on that front, then you will not compete at all.

Fans that create a Reddit site for EVE can make it look how they want, they can moderate it how they like, they can build up an empire of staff if they so wish. And it seems that many players do like having the power to moderate others, which is dangerous if they only like the moderating part, but there are others that love to create how their site looks and works, and that's an energy worth having.

Forum moderation in either forums, new or old, is always prickly. I tend to think that moderators should be anonymous and paid staff. There are a variety of reasons why I think that way. The main one being that nobody does something for nothing.

My only concern about a new forum is the retention of the old forum posts somewhere that could still be accessible from the new system. There is a LOT of good information in here (even if it is a teaspoon of wine in a barrel full of sewage).

Oh my, it's just getting better.

CCP is not just saving some money by moving from customized forum software to the GNU licensed abomination called Discourse, but also they plan to save DB server resources by not linking the forum account to your game account.

That is, you will have one character account, with no forums, and one forum account, with no characters linked to it.

It's so great. The obvious issues with that have been pointed by the CSM, but they can't be addressed; CCP will not link a Discourse-based cesspool with their pretty customer DBs, even if it was technically easy.

So enjoy the EVE forums while they last. Really, really enjoy them. Because now their future looks as pretty as EVE's
. Ugh

OK, slash it all. What will be gone are per-character accounts, but forum accounts still will be based on a character name from the game account:

"The CSM asked how usernames would be determined, to which CCP replied that it would be set based on the first character you log into the forums with. Forum accounts would now no longer be based on characters, and instead would be account based. Players could have the option to change their forum username for a few days before it's locked."

What is the point of such change? Isn't it better to have one account to rule them all?

1) Come to one of the art sessions or round tables at Fanfest.
2) Post here. We have team members keeping an eye on that forum.
3) Post here if it's about something new on our Singularity test server.

Honestly, only a couple of us read Reddit frequently and there's no way we can do justice to feedback posted here unless it's truly game-breaking, so I don't recommend posting here if you're trying to get things in front of our team.
So much for Reddt as the best place to get developer attention for non game-breaking posts. Feature and Idea suggestions are best placed in the official forums, even if it seems like they never happen. Agree that is a separate issue from "where the fun has gone" posts in this thread.
