Is this because you have to turn down graphics settings on your machine?

If you have high graphics settings turned on and you haven't disabled effects, you should see new shield effects on the Mac client. If not, please bug report it and we can check it out.

Nope, they are all the way up. CCP Sledge indicated there is apparently an issue with how Cider handles volumetric textures (so there are no visible shield boost or armor and hull repair effects). Shield hits are barely perceptible (you get a slight spherical glow). Under the highest shader settings cloaks, engine exhausts, contrails and various other effects are pixelated so it's actually best viewed under medium shader settings at present.

I am currently away, traveling through time and will be returning last week.

Ah, has it been two-and-a-half years already? How time flies when you are waiting for some 2048x2048 pictures.

With respect to the environments, we were aware of the limitations of what we were releasing, and trust me, we did see the issues that you've pointed out. The image compression artifacts that are particularly visible in a certain regions of space are a technical limitation that requires further work, but our judgment was that the additional feeling of depth that having nebulas occlude stars provided was of greater value.

As I mentioned in the other thread on that matter, we're still discussing how to address that particular technical limitation.

We have at least one other change coming not too far out that will do a lot more to make EVE look better when running at highest settings.

For those keeping score, this comment of mine referred to the new Temporal Anti-aliasing feature that is now enabled when you choose the highest anti-aliasing choice in the graphics settings. If you have a modern, high-end graphics card and haven't chosen that setting, I suggest giving it a try.

I gave it a try once. It seems to be a performance saver compared to other types of AA.
I recall Command & Conquer Generals using TAA (might have been a mod, can't recall).

I'm using it now, I'm not actually losing any fps ...

That's a big +1 from me for that! :)

That ringing in your ears you're experiencing right now is the last gasping breathe of a dying inner ear as it got thoroughly PULVERISED by the point roaring over your head at supersonic speeds. - Tippia

It's actually in the patch notes that this is not available for Macs, which is becoming rather too common recently that you release something new that doesn't work for your Mac customers.

I noticed something today.

Deployed a mobile tractor unit next to my rattlesnake.

Now, in the past there hgas been mention that the size of objects and the associated textures means that the bigger the item, the crapper the texture is...

Yet, the mobile tractor unit is not that small (1/10th the size of the rattlesnake), but the textures are crisp and detailed. Yet the rattlesnake, at the same zoom level is blurry, pixelated and 1990's looking.

Please please please give the ships a sharper texture skin. The turrets have a detailed skin, the deployables do to, yet the ships are crappy :(

Yes to the original post.

"Yes they actually said an optional extra download that could be added or removed. The art team would love to do it. They just need player support to convince the decision makers that its worthwhile."

Is this art team still out there?

We rushed at the last minute to get the effect working for the Mac, which it didn't to begin with because in early development it relied on DX11. Unfortunately it appears that remaining issues didn't get fully resolved before we released. Sorry about that.

That sounds absolutely fantastic! I was starting to get concerned about the EVE engine beginning to feel dated. This is the best thing they can do other than creating a whole new engine.

It really won't be long until just about everyone owns a computer that can handle this.

Hey look a high resolution Corax (which is apparently plot-safe and doesn't combust in atmosphere)
