SCYLLA - Download On Demand Issues

hmmm... I'm thinking DoD should have been opt in... not forced upon....

I'd have much preferred to have dl'd the update once for a couple of hours vs the 4 or 5 hours of restarts, deletes and re-installs that this has already come to. Not to mention avoiding the future lag issues with the damn thing constantly "updating demand content" in the future.

I've given up and am just doing a completely fresh install of everything... Should I just go ahead and do that for the other two accounts as well to save time?

You shouldn't have to install anything for several hours if you had an existing install already. The EVE Launcher will try to migrate an existing installation to the new shared cache to avoid doing exactly that.

Hi!

I noticed on the Sisi client after it was changed to download on demand that when i made a session change ingame like jumping a gate or undocking from station that the client halts for 2-3 secs.

I never got around to reporting it and forgot about it until i patched my tq client today and the issue was introduced on tq as well.

Now, when jumping gates its not that big of an issue as you end up cloaked after jumping but undocking from a station leaves your ship in space while the client hangs and takes away the seconds you may need to get away from station before someone targets you.

I cannot find any other posts about this but I know other players have noticed it as well.

I did and it didn't

even re-installing the new launcher via the online link and it won't start.... so this is just simpler to start over than waste any more time trying to get it working...

thanks

Are there any launcher.exe processes that have hung, in the background?

CCP, I don't want to mess this up and as I am one of those with download caps, I don't have 13GB of bandwidth to spare to download everything all over again, so: -

  • I currently have one installation of Eve Online
  • I currently run two instances of this one installation for my two accounts
  • The new downloader says that its going to move/ copy? everything to a new shared folder

Questions:

  1. What is going to happen to my current installation (all 13.06 GB of it?)
  2. Are files now going to be duplicated or redundant due to everything being copied over to the new folder?
  3. Should I now copy a second installation of Eve Online to run my second account?
  4. How should I best proceed with running my two separate accounts?
  5. Ultimately how is this going to effect my bandwidth usage on a month by month basis?

Your current install will still exist, just without the art, audio and video assets, which will be in the shared resource cache.
Desert Ice78 wrote:

The .stuff files and any audio or video files under the res/ folder will be moved to the shared resource cache and the now redundant source files removed.
Desert Ice78 wrote:

I don't see why you would need to, if you were using one install to run them both already.
Desert Ice78 wrote:

Continue as before.
Desert Ice78 wrote:

I don't think it will affect it greatly; patching of the binaries will occur in the same manner as before, but assets may be downloaded as you encounter a ship or similar that uses them.

The launcher will move all the resource files to the new shared cache location so you don't have to download that again. The stuff files will be deleted afterwards so you won't have duplicates lying around. Once the conversion process has finished the launcher will download anything that has changed, similar to what it's always done.

You don't need a second installation to run your second account - that will work the same as it did before.

Your bandwidth usage overall shouldn't change.

I have an issue with the launcher. Although I ticked the box that allows it to download all assets in one go, it keeps extracting the shared cache everytime I relaunch it. And even if the launcher finishes extracting, it never gets through the update installation, ever (I have been using EVE Repair tool to update my client for 6 months now). In desperate, I installed the manual installer and now my client is all dead. Launcher, main exe file, none of them is working (EVE repair does not fix the problem). What should I do now?

CCP guys are beating each other up over on Reddit as well - fighting over who gets to answer a help question first. I don't know which is more impressive - seriously major patching paradigm switch with just a few bumps or the enthusiasm of the support. Big smile

As a user who has both multiple installs with varying settings and installs across multiple computers, I would like to know if anything is changing in the CCP/EVE AppData folder. It usually contains two folders, one for settings and one for cache.

Does this new DoD model remove the multiple cache folders and save oodles of space?

Were you able to reproduce this within the last few days or today on Tranquility? There was indeed a short freeze during session changes on Singularity, which was unrelated to Download on Demand. This freeze should have been fixed about 12 days ago and I am no longer able to reproduce it.

If you could provide us with some logs or screenshots that would be a good start. Then we can work on solving it. I should also point out that we expressly said that updating via the EVE Repair Tool was a Terrible Idea™ since it's not download-on-demand capable, and as a result will delete files from your (old) EVE Client that could have been migrated to the shared cache, which you subsequently have to download again.

During testing on Singularity we tried have it as an optional migrate, but we found that users were often not migrating their assets at all, and were then complaining about downloading gigabytes of data.
We decided that it was better to go through a one-time-per-install migration for everyone than to risk most people not migrating at all.
I understand that, but could you please look into the problem for why WinXP users need to download an extra file as posted in this topic to make it work? I had multiple launchers in my taskmanager all of a sudden and none of them did anything. Only installing the file linked in this topic fixed the problem. Would be handy if you would somehow add this to the regular patching when the system detects Windows XP c:

CCP Atropos wrote:
Once the migration process completes, it will delete the source .stuff files in the EVE installation, so you won't have to continually migrate the same installation. It's still possible to have multiple individual installations, although our long term plan is to remove the necessity of having them, simply to isolate your settings profiles.
I can confirm this worked fine and I have more space than before, at least this is an improvement.

BUT!

There is a problem though :c
The SETTINGS are not saved in the local installation, but they're saved in "Documents and settings -> username -> Local settings -> Application data -> CCP " folder on your system drive. This is where cache and settings are stored, including all the portraits and other temporary files. It also creates a folder for each installation! That wastes space due to this redundancy because all portraits and anything else are loaded in there individually as well. So in my case I have the folders:
e_eve_tranquility
and
i_spiele_eve_tranquility

So it would be very much appreciated if you are adding a process to migrate those files into the shared files, AWAY from the system drive. Because in my case both folders are a total of 1.7 GB. If you're merging all account profile settings into one folder, all our settings and temporary data are in one place, being our game folder and not our system folder! c:

By the way? Your new loading boar doesn't look good when starting the game directly, bypassing the launcher :c Not only is it horribly jagged... but... what is the problem of seeing how much progress has passed instead of staring at a never ending fluctuating something?

Nothing has changed in the AppData folder, the settings and cache folders are there the same as before so multiple installs with different settings will work exactly as before.

What has changed is that the game assets are no longer in the EVE install folder but live in the shared resource cache instead.

To be fair to Lanaya - you only announced on the Launcher which many of us have given up on using because of its many painful issues. I literally just barely missed falling into this same trap because of the reddit announcement. So, finally throwing up a red flag OUTSIDE the Launcher at the last minute was bound to miss a few thousand people. Hopefully this doesn't reach BOOT.INI notoriety, but ignoring the countless pleas to fix the Launcher @##%@!&*!%$ ever since it came out may finally come home to bite you.

Assuming I have slow Canadian internet and I chose download-on-demand. Then I come across a new fangled-space-pixels-whigimagee that I don't see because it will take 5 minutes to download.

  • Will I still see brackets on overview and in space where the model is?
  • And will I be able to kill the invisible-ship-bracket with fire in the meantime as eve downloads the model?
