One thing bugs me lately is the launcher craps out after downloading patches.
So its pretty unplayable state for me atm.
Problem is having limited bandwidht of 70 gb this month left and GTA 5 on the horizon..
So should I download the 20 gb client for 3rd time or just wait until its in a more polished state?

Eve's got hands down the best infrastructure, comparable to Valve's steam client imo.

Well, you can hardly call a game that's in the process of being made a finished product, and given your overall download limit, I think you should hold off downloading it, and might be better off waiting until more bug fixing and overall polish is done.

Seems that the 1.1 update with the retaliator and the new damage modeling and the free flight mode brings the size of the client to over 30 GB, so it's only going to get even bigger and there's still tons of content yet to be released from now to the end of the year, early next.

Might be time to consider that USB key offer, if increasing your download limit isn't an option.

Yup, but that said, it'll be cool to do manual or automatic planetary landings and takeoffs in explorer mode, something that was teased a long time ago in 2004 in eve online with an amarr malediction frigate flying on the surface of a planet, but as usual, nothing came of it.

My take on star citizen.

Graphically it looks awesome. The depth to the PVE gameplay sounds impressive. I love how you can walk around in your ship and on stations etc...

but....

with a 30 person instance.. how on earth are they going to create a vibrant community featuring corporations / organizations with strategic goals and a game world with conflict drivers etc.

You log on one day and fight a guy, do a bit of smack and say your going to burn his corp down around him. Then due to instancing you never find him again.. or you flag him and he is in your instance but none of his corp mates are.. or none of yours are. .

I just don't see how the game is going to be anything more than PVE + warp to PVP area and do death match style.

and this is the key problem... Its very difficult to create enough PVE content to keep everyone interested long term.. and just PVP death match gets boring after a while.

About the only form of global / strategic gameplay it will be able to offer is market PVP because it doesn't require instancing.

SC just isn't about that, what you are describing is in essence EVE. EVE works as a social mmo because short of never undocking/minimizing local and turning off all possibility of chat request, you can't escape interact with other people, sometimes the same people as yesterday .

This isn't important for people who just want to fly space fighters and be left alone, but for people who get used to EVE, they find that they come to crave what EVE makes us do and how EVE makes us interact, which is why many people who play longer than a few months will claim they will never come back, but often they do.

It's not CCP manipulating anyone, it's the fact that human are social animals and no matter how much one claims to be a hermit, deep down they want to be around other people, even in a video game.

Last i heard, the limit of the instance still hasn't been defined yet, but given the amount of detail on each ship, it's easy to see it'll take a horse of a system, and a really good internet connection to keep performance in the playable zone (at least 30 Fps minimum, 60 Fps ideally).

All that's been mentioned so far is somewhere between 50 and 100 ships in a given instance, so it'll never have battles at the scale EVE does.

F.Y.I I was impressed with the eve Valkyrie presentation video.....Felt like the fighter bombers really were in the thick of it...:)

oh good someone bumped this. so i can add this

I really can;t wait for it to come out. why? so people can STFU about it already. Tired of seeing random "oh well SC has this" or "oh well if eve doesn;t do this i'll just play SC"

Its like the damn elections, i don;t care who wins (i think SC will flop) i just want the damn election day over so the stupid ad's will get off my tv (us elections btw)

No, what i see if a snake oil sales man trying to sell you the cure of the century and tons of people flocking to him drooling all over themselves to get it.

SC could be a fantastic game. But the issue being that most people who are rooting for think its the second coming of god is what makes me hope it crashes and burns in a firery death.

And if its successfully then thats a GOOD thing. Because compition promotes inovation and tends to make someone do better. SC could easily help eve just as much as eve can help SC.

What annoys me, is that people can;t seem to take a step back and go 'hm.. progress is slow, i'll wait a bit and see what it will become before i start preaching second coming. But because i liek the progress i'll give them money, i'll just keep myself in check for a bit" But what actually is happening is "OMG THIS WILL KILL ALL GAMES EVER! BEST GAME EVER! OMG!"

Perspective is what is needed.

And to use your anology if i can;t see the forest from the trees, then SC fan bois are ignoring signs of possible fire all around them while they drool over what they think is a golden tree

I didn't know much about SC or Elite until I checked them out in past few weeks, and I came to the conclusion that I would play a different space simulator game and call it an Eve killer;

if it had the skill/practice based WASD game play, physics, FPS mode, manual dock/warp, oculus support and other features which Eve doesn't have but SC or Elite has;

AND;

if it also had the single persistent universe without much instancing, political depth, strategical depth, community based lore, players' ability to form enormous entities together, 2000vs2000 wars, and this kind of stuff which Eve has.

Now this combination is a wet-dream of any person who likes space sims, and I believe almost every Eve player too. I think this is partially why CCP attempted Dust, with thoughts on implementing a FPS system in Eve itself later on.

But unfortunately SC or Elite or no other similar will not have most of the Eve-like features I mentioned in the second half, for at least 15 more years maybe more, due to most of the features in this second half are technically impossible to implement with a game with physics, much like 12 years ago, when the computing capabilities of today's PC's are taken into account. Surprisingly in 2015, still, you can't simply make a server that can handle 2000 vs. 2000 combat AND have physics. That is perhaps the genius behind Eve's non-physical system and what makes it unique.

Furthermore, even when a company achieves the technical capability to make such a game, it will have to deal with years of expertise CCP has building a game in their own genre. Much like others found it hard to deal with Blizzard's expertise to make a decent MMORPG.

Now I hope this situation will change in the future but it will not be near future.

Meanwhile, given the choice between a physics game or a non-physics Eve, most of us will somehow return to Eve, because the non-physics features are the reason we are here in the first place. However I see it a genuine danger this kind of games will be marginalized over time, due to the fact that, for some 25 years, we tend to dumb-down and casualize everything that belongs to the culture, from films and music to books and games and all. Even WoW is much, much casual and dumbed-down compared to 10 years ago. In such a climate, Eve may find it harder to find new people to play it with every passing year.
