Eve online had its peak in 2013, it has been declining since then and once an mmo hits that stage it's pretty much over. I've never seen an mmo make a recovery no matter how hard the developers tried. CCP had its chance but they blew it. They had all the time in the world with 0 competitors in the past to bring eve to the next level so it can compete with future games that are stealing everyone's attention.

Instead they got cocky, thought they could do no wrong and wasted our money with failed projects and incompetent developers. Eve should have evolved a LOT the past few years but instead CCP is still trying to fix the mess they created with unfinished content.

We're at the point now were alliances are feeling the effects of a 20-30% player base shrink with inactivity and lack of members being a universal problem. Unfortunately, Eve is a community driven game that needs a good player-base to remain interesting. So contrary to what many people have claimed it cannot continue existing with a low player-base.

You know when the game is in trouble when there are barely any threads discussion the issue. In the past big scandals had massive reactions and the forums were lively, CCP had nothing to worry the protests were a sign of how much people really cared about Eve that it continued to grow until mid of 2013. This is how games die, it is slow, nobody talks about it, people just lose interest and quietly leave. Forums become inactive and nobody bothers to say anything.

Let's just enjoy this game for as long as we can.

Perhaps more adverts in different places that they're shown now?

Are you.... Kidding me?

*sigh
Active player numbers ARE rising. Peak online population is NOT an indicator that EVE isn't growing.
Besides, having lots of people online at the same time causes major traffic inconveniences.

Yeah because less ppl logged in concurrently is a sign of growth Roll less ppl is better as well SadRoll CCP must be happy then

Tal

Yes.. it can be a sign of growth

No it can't.

It's not a definitive sign against growth, but you can't look at a decreasing graph of concurrent players online and say "yeah, looks like our subscriptions are growing."

If we were able to get the game to a point where we had 100k average people on at one point in time it would be insane (In a good way). I would love to see the game grow vastly bigger.

CCP is a whole lot different than say Turbine (LOTRO) or Gizzard (Panda Poo). Turbine, for instance, was bought by Warner Brothers who uses a profit margin formula to decide if it likes to hold onto things, or not. This formula is tied to the rest of WB's many and varied operations, and slides into the board room on a flow chart. Assets are given or taken from each operation according to this flow chart's dictates. There's a lot more numbers than people making decisions, and all the projects WB is involved in are seen first in keeping WB alive...not the "game."

I think your experience with MMOs dying (which LOTRO has yet to do, by the way) comes from involvement in these sorts of organizations. CCP has considerable and significant differences from these. It could almost be defined as a Mom & Pop operation that evolved into a corporation. CCP doesn't have a greater conglomerate, or a body of voting shareholders to keep happy with profit/loss statements. So, you'll discover (eventually) CCP is in a unique position, and this position gives them a lot of latitude other corporations just don't have. (Not that they can't have this latitude themselves, or that CCP couldn't become like them, mind you.)

SO...this EVE has been dying for several years (eight by my count). At least, that's what the armchair CEOs always say. And, for eight years so far it's managed to fool the experts (both qualified and unqualified). My estimation is it will go ON fooling this endless flow of doomsaying experts (who by the way are making proclamations more to make themselves look informed than to actually inform US.)

I bet you all your stuff I'm right.

We must accommodate the idiocracy.

arnt these records false anyway?

i have been on these forums when everyone is tryin to break the record and loggin all their alts on, so they dont really count anyway.

iirc usually happens around fanfest, which beggers the question, just who is it that starts this off?, must be usefull for CCP and their press realeses for the up coming yearBlink

very valid point, most of the ads are "come play eve, be the bad guy" or some tail of how players backstab people and such, im sure the last big fight was "great publicity" to get people to stay away.

Very optimistically there is the possibility we're currently playing Eve 2, beta release. You might suspect that current feedback to various beta projects like the new map, drastic (all be it mostly pleasant) UI changes and various efforts on SiSi of late are both part of a new development and release flow as well as Eve 2's open beta project.

To be blindingly cheery (feel free to insinuate i should cut back on booster use), one might suspect in a couple years we'll be in a much better place than we are now, playing a wholly new Version of Eve. Oh, it'll still be tranquility with our characters and assets, the fundamentals of Eve as we know them will be mostly still here. But it'll just as equally be drastically improved and changed.

With all of this current effort and the new face of Eve to come, it may draw in a new generation of players who wish to participate in the New Eden experience as a whole. From there, real growth in population. New records and explosions in space. Oh, and a darn good reason to have stuck around through the thick n' thin of our player experiences past and present due to :CCP:

(Or i should consider cutting back on the synth stuff too)

Here are a couple of pieces of anecdotal evidence:

1. I occasionally send off a character to the SOE L1 epic arc for the purposes of remedial standing fixes. (Yes, DMC, I know there are other ways and I thank you for documenting them.) There are always numerous noobs tackling the arc and, judging by the questions they ask and the areas where they get stuck, more than half of them at any given time are new players and not alts for veteran players.

2. I started a new character in Caldari space some time ago. I was heartened that the training agents were much better than the ones when I joined Eve. And there were numerous noobs running through their training lessons.

From these experiences, I have never felt that CCP was ineffective in soliciting new players. There always seemed to be a decent number of noobs.

HOWEVER:

At the Epic Arc, there are always at least one and sometimes three or four "helpful" veterans who offer their services to noobs who get stuck. Once their help is accepted, they grab the current mission objective and ransom it back to the poor noob.

In the Caldari training system, there was always at least one veteran who would try to induce the noobs to taking an action that would mark them as a criminal. Then the vet (bravely PvPing a 1-day old character) would gun down the noob.

SO

While new players are coming into the system in (apparently) adequate numbers, my experience is that they are treated too harshly. Step into a noob's shoes, "Gee, I just got killed on my first day in the game and now my progress is blocked in an epic arc because my objective has been seized and is being held for ransom. Why don't I just blow over 100 $US to set myself up for a full year of such abuse?" And maybe they'll buy the Brooklyn Bridge as well.

Jenshae has the right idea. To retain these noobs and convert their trial subscriptions into paying ones, someone (CCP?) needs to herd the noobs into temporary corps (not the current NPC model) that will offer regular guidance and support.

As to the trope that Eve is "dying," give it a rest. CCP would need management twice as stupid as Dilbert's company for them to "die." Because they have a subscription-based economy, CCP knows within a few percentage points each month what their income and expense will be. Armed with the knowledge, they can adjust expenses to accommodate fluctuations in revenue by speeding or slowing development and adding or delaying new equipment. It's not quite as easy as that last sentence made it sound, but it's also not as complicated as (gasp!) rocket science.

Don't panic now … there'll be plenty of time to do that later.

I am jurgen b his alt and i have a summer stop or like a pre sexual vibes feeling stop i need to have sex before i can play eve again, natural thing. i hope when i return after i had sex, if i had sex at all, they finaly get rid of the old vet hyping, those guy's are good etc but they are bored of eve no matter what and keeps us in a stall and hope they go for people who love to do things; oh yeah i stop with 10 accounts 9 are females :) i have the feeling that eve is based on how to get bitter vets back while they dont care about the game, everything they see they just keep complaining and nagging like old people. last expansion for me was the old vet nag about everything that is AFK instead playing the game; i mean they dont play the game ever they just nag and cry about everything because they are bored in life as old people. i hope it wil change since i know 100% old vets didnt quit EVE because the wrong things, they quit because they are not interested anymore. hope EVE doesnt end up in a old people care house when i come back. fly safe and till next time and hope i finaly had sex

Big smile

Ahhhh, thank you very much. Information is King and Conversation is it's Queen. I'm a firm believer that knowledge is power.

And that's something which is sorely lacking in the NPE (New Player Experience). I'm not talking about game controls. I'm talking about the hidden truths about this game and how it intentionally misleads new players with false advertising propaganda and in game word phrases that mean something else when compared to real life, such as High Security. Definitely some unbalanced game mechanics happening there which makes it very tough to retain new players.

And in my opinion yes, this game is slowly loosing it's appeal (dying) to the older 'Vet' players as well despite all of the new lackluster 'Changes' constantly being done. It's turning into a regular 'theme-park' game where everyone can do everything within the first couple months of playing this game. The UI and the game screen itself has been filled up with so many 'Extras' that players have to purchase top of the line Computers each year just to be able to play the game on low graphics settings.

And yet I stay subscribed. I constantly hang on to the hope that this game will eventually turn itself around. I plan on keeping my account and this character active for as long as CCP keeps the server active. I may only log in once in a while to set up skill training but ...............

Oh wait ........ I don't even have to log into the game anymore since I can just set up a 10 year skill queue. Good job CCP, giving the players even more reasons to not log in.

What I mean is that the push from the player base tends to come from Null Sec and to some extent Worm Holes but even with masses of people flooding into EVE they would only pool in High Sec and rub each other the wrong way.

Either it is pointless noise that won't achieve anything at this point or they just want more victims to kill.

So, an adjustment to Low Sec, "War Frontier" systems to cater to the niche that is there then fix up the other systems to make it the next step from High Sec.
Then this really weird thing called, "Target Marketing"

Get EVE on the Ubuntu Software Centre.
Advertise to people who play Go online.
Lure in some students at universities who play Chess and such.

People who appreciate a long game that takes some thinking, rather than altering the game, dumbing it down, to try get more of the drooling masses.
They already have enough empty and dying WoW clones.

Do you guys really want more players in EVE?

Okay. I warn you; it takes a little effort:
  • You make a basic advert.
  • You print it out.
  • Then you put it in windows of local stores, preferably the comic store or a second hand games store.
  • Mention how to download EVE.
  • Put little pull off tabs with the name of your character on it.
  • When someone contacts you from the advert, you help them.
  • Figure out their style of play. If you got 10 care bears and you are an e-peen ganker tough! Put that effort in and teach them how to do their thing safely.
  • Throw some ISK at them
  • Show them how to fit their ships.
  • Make sure they join a good suitable alliance that will support them.

Extra mile is you get them to e-mail you, recommend the game to them, then give them PLEX number 1 so they can have 51 free days.

Bonus: You might make some real friends who share your interest, live near you and are not the usual sort of people you would talk to so you could broaden your horizons.

Have you talked to the guys at my local game store? Screw this!
