I haven't been seeing a rise in online play, but CCP has been making changes here and there (such as removing the clone level and sp loss) that make life nicer. So I'd think we'll probably retain more folks over time, but still, I'd like to see more people playing.

Perhaps more adverts in different places that they're shown now?

Are you.... Kidding me?

*sigh
Active player numbers ARE rising. Peak online population is NOT an indicator that EVE isn't growing.
Besides, having lots of people online at the same time causes major traffic inconveniences.

Yes.. it can be a sign of growth, with things like the skill queue, players can set long skills and go do other stuff and still pay for there account. When my son was born I took a year off of eve, I paid for my three accounts that full year and just kept them training. PCU != Subscriber numbers, nor can you get any real data on subscriber numbers from it. All it says is who has logged in at what time. you could have 100k accounts just training, that don't log in for months, yet they are still there, giving ccp money.

Well, we just don't know. It's all just speculations. It could be either way. Unless CCP releases some stats, which is unlikely to happen, we'll never know.

I'd leave it at that.

Stats which I'm sure most of the veterans know about.

While the concurrent users number isn't a true indication of the total playerbase number, the trends (up and down) are somewhat obvious in the past year and all time graphs.

Well, a lot of people ditched their alts. Me for instance, I ditched my archon alt because moving stuff with it was too damn irritating after the jump drive nerf.

And no, you don't know anything for sure since eve offline just shows the number of accounts, not the number of active players.

is 70k possible? sure, we peaked at I think 63k one time, so 70k is possible.

As for stats, there are a few ways that you can figure out how many accounts are paying, though its a bit harder now with dust, some math working off the 6month financials showed a drop of something like 29k accounts. (ccp was down around $200k IIRC)

The issue there is dust numbers, as we dunno what % of rev is form dust.

You could also get more data in the form of the CSM election and get a rough guestimate on the ammounts as well. But again, dust skews the numbers. If say CCP said you had an 8% vote, then you can mess with at figure and the finances to get a rough idea. The last 'unoffical' count was 500k, before fan fest 2014 and that included dust. So its hard to tell.

If you REALLY wanted to some math, you could use staticics to take the last number we had offially, see how many players peaked online during that year, figure out a % and in theory if that holds true always, then you could use the % and the current peak and again get a rough estimate. Then use the financals to see if that supports...

looks like I just found me a project to do tonight.. sigh lol

Boy I sure might be mistaken- but I seem to remember seeing a peak of about 100k at one time in 08, maybe 07?

A dev would know. But I'm pretty certain about it.

Do you guys really want more players in EVE?

Okay. I warn you; it takes a little effort:
  • You make a basic advert.
  • You print it out.
  • Then you put it in windows of local stores, preferably the comic store or a second hand games store.
  • Mention how to download EVE.
  • Put little pull off tabs with the name of your character on it.
  • When someone contacts you from the advert, you help them.
  • Figure out their style of play. If you got 10 care bears and you are an e-peen ganker tough! Put that effort in and teach them how to do their thing safely.
  • Throw some ISK at them
  • Show them how to fit their ships.
  • Make sure they join a good suitable alliance that will support them.

Extra mile is you get them to e-mail you, recommend the game to them, then give them PLEX number 1 so they can have 51 free days.

Bonus: You might make some real friends who share your interest, live near you and are not the usual sort of people you would talk to so you could broaden your horizons.

EVE is becoming shallow and puerile; it will satisfy neither the veteran nor the "WoW" type crowd in the transition.

The accounts online will drop the next few days, but yeah like others said the amount of unique players is probably growing.

What matters not is a higher peak number,
because that's only a really small timeframe each day.

If there were more people playing during timeframes of lower activity,
it would be far better, because that means more activity spread out over the day.

Daily peak number might still be the same,
yet population increased.

I know... hard to grasp ... for some at least.
