The booster gives bonuses to the entire 250 man fleet, thus headshotting the booster and whoever becomes booster after the booster is dead, is pretty much the deciding factor in many engagements. However it would be nice if the booster could be hidden on the fleet window. Yet remain visible through some sort of animation, so that any fleet that takes its time to cycle through the enemy ships can figure out who is boosting.
What do you think? This should keep the meta-gamers happy in that they can still relay the info about squad commanders and wing commanders, yet the shoot-the-booster mini-game can be performed by both sides since it is such a powerful tactic.

Any 250 man fleet that has the booster on-field is doing it wrong.

For this to be worth anything, the boosting ships needs to be undistinguishable from teh rest of the fleet and THAT is why on grid boost barely ever happen. On grid boost would be much less stupid if it was not limited to a very small selection of ships which you can spot the instant they appear on overview.

Boosting should not be based on module/ships but on fleet hierarchy position. Headshotting a fleet commander should be rewarding just like shooting a colonel in the army but not as stupidly easy as it is now by spotting where the command ship is. Just prevent fleet position movement from player who have a weapon timer so you can't just "field promote" a new leader to prevent people from just replacing him if it happens.

Sure, for links. Keep them off-grid, but in a full fleet at least some of the boosting characters (those passing the links bonuses) are on-grid.

Squad Commanders for example are mostly on-grid and usually the squad booster (don't have to be). The fleet interface shows exactly which characters are passing the boosts and make it easy for a spy to highlight that information for an enemy fleet. Take out the booster and no one in the squad gets the links bonuses.

In any event, I don't personally see this as much of a problem. Headshots will happen anyway and comms discussion will give the details away to any spy in fleet anyway.

So, when I set up my fleet, I tell the fleet which pilots need to be watch-listed. This makes it easier for me to keep them alive. It also tells the spies exactly which ships I want to protect the most. Personally, I care less about letting the spies know the information than I do about organizing my fleet effectively. Spies are just part of the game.

Headshots are just part of the game too. Absolutely nothing wrong with destroying the enemy command and control network. What do you think this is? The 18th century?

You could still take pot shots (18th century firearms were no sniper rifles...) at the guy with the most gold on his shoulder and have a good shot at hurting the command structure. :D

No, on-grid boosting cannot work as long as off-grid boosting exists. If you remove off-grid boosting, then you make on-grid boosting comparatively viable. Yes, lots of command ships may die, but those that don't will give the fleet an advantage over the other side.

Also, on-grid boosting works just fine in small-scale combat.

Ya know I don't think Squad Members should know who squad leaders/wing commanders/fleet commanders are. I think that it should really only work as a hierarchy.

Squad Members can see other Squad Members
Squad Leaders can see other Squad Leaders and squad members
Wing commanders can see other Wing Commanders, Squad Leaders and squad members.
FCs can see everyone.

This lets people still get some intel if they are spying, although it would take some time to filter through the 250 names in a fleet to find the dudes whose names aren't on the list they can see.

I'm going to put in my +1 for the average fleet member not being able to just easily see who the booster is. If you want to headshot the booster, then do your proper job as a spy and figure it out. The rest of the hierarchy should be visible though.
