Well we can all give our little genius advice about how CCP should do this and that, but the problem is that they clearly don't have the need amazon.com has for exemple (not as many client) and has more need than your sister's blog (much more clients). So they're stuck like that between using huge and complicated failover mechanics they would need once a year, and not doing anything at all.

We have the same problem every winter in Paris: we've got only like 5 snowplough for 12 millions inhabitants because we see snow once every two years... why would the city invest in an overkill setup ? But when like last year the snow falls during 7 days, then we're totally screwed and lost. No choice, it'll never improve unless we have a WoW-like userbase.

Last time one of their server blades caught fire and melted.
I have yet to hear of a story where fire and electronics mixed well.

No, as far as I know this has never happened except for one case where the servers were down for over 3 days.
