One thing said ahead.

For me personally it`s a different thing to put a sticker on something that easily washes off with weather conditions at a place where it doesn`t really interrupt with anyones viewing experience with the monument or permanently try to delete someones name from the monument by destructive force.

I`ve said this to a few people in Iceland already but the way the Monument is set up lacks of proper planning and execution by CCP all together. And that is something you have to blame CCP for and noone else.

I thought that CCP of all companies out there had learned that if you give players the opportunity to do such a thing as scratch someones name off they will eventually do it.

I`d really like to know who had the insanely bright idea to put the nameplates on the ground level and have fans walk, crouch and lay flat on their face on it to find their player names or take a picture from it without taking any precautions that in the long run the names won`t wash off or get damaged by fans intentionally.

Also if you know how agressive bird-do is, this really wasn`t the best choice.

Last but not least I completely don`t understand why they hadn't covered each plate by a thin layer of scratch resistant acrylic.
But hey why spend a few extra bucks per plate if you can just go the lazy route and end up with drama like this.

Very disappointed to read this after such a great weekend.
Hopefully the local law enforcement will have some luck in helping this idiot into understanding where the line between in- game & RL is.

So, there's a couple of things going to happen in this thread right now:

  • First - People are going to stop pointing fingers and blaming people. CCP will investigate and take any action against game accounts, along with any legal action that we feel necessary. This is already in progress.
  • Second - This is damage of public property in the City of Reykjavik. The police have been informed, and investigation is ongoing. This is not a laughing matter, and will be dealt with as a criminal offence. We are currently reviewing security footage from a number of surrounding buildings.
  • Third - People will stop attacking the victim of this on our forums. It's not funny, it's not clever. Take your rumor mongering and personal attacks away from our community. If you choose not to, you'll be removed from the community, permanently. It's a simple as that. We will not tolerate victimization.

What's happened is absolutely disgusting. It's an insult to the entire community and is clearly the work a person who believes that behavior in a virtual world is a valid reason to make a real life personal attack on someone, and deface public property.

We will not tolerate this.

Thankfully we've already had a number of players come forward to assist us and provide information. Including, we believe, members of the person's own alliance.

Thankfully the vast majority of the rest of the community are in the same frame of mind as CCP - disgusted at the fact that someone would do this, and we're extremely grateful for your assistance.

With that in mind, I'll make a simple one time offer, that if the person who defaced the monument wants to come forward and contact me relating to this, then they can do so by EVE mailing my Dev character. If this happens, we'll take it as a gesture of good faith after an extremely stupid act that was committed.

With this in mind, be sure to keep this thread on topic, and cut out the personal attacks and finger pointing. People who break the rules will lose their forum posting privileges. Permanently.

Thanks.

Seriously Falcon bro, cover those names up with a clear protector. We both know it'll happen again, sadly enough. If I was at fanfest I'd do it for you myself, for free!

Stealing the idea from my local graveyard maint. guys, in fact. They've started sealing text on grave markers with plexi, coz dimbulbs have been defacing headstone test for lulz.

This. Given how quickly someone went full derp over stupid in-game crap, a coating or something should go on the monument.

Also I volunteer a cloaky alt to keep eyes on it.

Again, how?
Suppose the perp is American. They're most certainly out of Iceland by now. What exactly do you expect Reykjavic police to do? Request extradition over vandalism?
Probably the most that could happen is that all of their accounts get banned.

Uh no, this is about someone else causing physical damage (scratches) to the monument. Not a sticker.

If I were in CCP's position, I wouldn't say another word from here on out. If I did get pretty solid evidence as to who it was, I'd just let the Icelandic equivalent of customs know. Wouldn't even ban the account.

Then, when/if the dimwit decides to arrive at the next fanfest, the customs dood can deny entry, and the perp can have a good long chat with the relevant authorities about restitution. IIRC, CCP did donate the monument to Reykjavik, so it's public/city property now.

This is how you handle the situation. Good on you Falcon.

That being said, without explicit amnesty being offered and the severity of the consequences, I have little hope that the vandal would step forward.

The Goon Bee sticker is on the reflective central pillar of the monument, it's not bothering anyone there.Lol
It's harmless and easy enough to remove if needed.

Taking a set of keys to the engraved steel plates on the monument itself is a little more serious though.

I have never felt anything but acceptance at Fanfest, barring a very very small number of occassions I can wander up to anyone and say "Hi, I'm in Goonwaffe, who do you guys fly with" and people will not give the slightest of fucks.

I love that in this community there can be SO MUCH hatred and vitriol within the game that simply evaporates in the real world and that players from any walk of EVE can go get a pint together at a player gathering without caring who flies with whom.

That some people cannot operate outside the sandbox saddens me, but there is hope in that even members of this douchholes own alliance have shopped them in for doing this.

There is a massive difference between defacing a solid structure by placing a removable sticker upon it and defacing a structure by causing permanent damage to it.

This very much, I haven't been able to go to Fanfest for a few years (it's not always easy to get vacation time around Fanfest time, it's generally a very busy time), but when I was there in 2009 and 2011 the mood was generally rather fun and everyone was cool with it all, regardless of their in-game affiliation.

If you bring a whole bunch of people together for an event, there's a pretty good possibility of at least one person committing a property crime of some sort, regardless of what event or people (with some exceptions).

This can and does happen to other communities too.

Not unless someone's gone and Photoshopped all the corneas of the CCP employees who have seen the damage firsthand.

Which is both impressive and terrifying if you think on it too hard.

"EVE is a dark and harsh world, you're supposed to feel a bit worried and slightly angry when you log in, you're not supposed to feel like you're logging in to a happy, happy, fluffy, fluffy lala land filled with fun and adventures, that's what hello kitty online is for." -CCP Wrangler
