That, and your hyperbole aside, they definitely are trying to do something different than the standard game development cycle here. People do need to be patient, but at the same time there is a reasonable expectation that a production will land in their laps. They didn't start the Kickstarter without doing some initial design work, and once things got going after they were fully funded the rest of the design work should have proceeded easily. That's not the problem; the problem is they got stuck fiddling with minute details in the engine implementation of their designs, which affected their schedule for development of the server infrastructure.

I think the game will be interesting, and that the overall result will be good. I don't think it will ever live up to the expectations of its audience, but I'd love to be proven wrong about that.

Oh wonder, another delay. This is starting to look awfully a lot like Freelancer.

Anyway, isn't the whole thing still instanced? If so, they're not trying to cram half a million people on Cry3.

Yep. Someone asked in one of the 10 for the Chairman vids whether there will be asteroid belts in the system, and he had an interesting time answering that question. In short: yes, and no. Yes in that some systems will have asteroid belts, but no you will not be like flying around them forever -- you basically warp in on instanced zones around that belt, transitioning from one to the other (instanced).

So yeah while there might be say a thousand people in a particular star system, there may be a couple of hundred in the area you're currently sitting in. And they will likely instance areas like most MMOs do, so who knows what that hard limit might be.

Either way, they won't be seeing a B-R in SC anytime soon.

Keep in mind that gameplay mechanics aside or if they're instanced or not, it's still going to be 3 locations around the world having the servers( north America, Europe and China), so I wouldn't want to be part of team responsible for setting up that many servers for 250 000 people to log on ASAP, regardless of how the distribution of the workload between all 3 locations will be like.



It's not the single server nightmare that EVE is, but is it a lot more players logging on just the same.

This is likely to save their asses though, since it has much more in common with the traditional MMO server architecture. They'll rely heavily on instancing to keep things stable, while still allowing a decently high concurrent user count overall.

With that said, in the content of SC, instancing makes since. Esp is each ship will be doing calculations in relation to physics and where it is in the game.

We will see how much that can actually get going that works as intented however.

There's going to be plenty in the forums bitching and moaning that their PC isn't good enough, but runs other games just fine.....Yes, star citizen will be that demanding when the settings are cranked up there.

The 60 figure was from Roberts himself during the PAX presentation one month ago, but that they'll monitor server traffic the entire time to see if it can go up.


Either way, it would be a long shot to reach 3000 players without your PC becoming a slide show and presenting one new frame every 30 secs...P

Dude, I know a guy that buys all metals wholesale for 10 cents a kilo. If I had a quarter of the tinfoil that's been posted in this thread I'd be friggin rich. Gotta ask these guys to lemme have all theirs once the game is live and they take it off P

It is a shame that you don't, you could afford education then and perhaps learn how to construct a proper argument.

This is very interesting, but doesn't invalidate the fact that its graphic engine core is younger than EVE's and that its gameplay controls are more intuitive.

Looking at the most recent video posted in this thread, why is the ship handling like a fighter jet in atmosphere? Can't you spin the ship around it's own axle without changing flight direction?

I'm thinking its because 100% realistic space flight is very difficult. I would expect them to have a hybrid atmospheric flight/newtonian flight model just out of sheer ease of use just like almost all other space sims out there use.

If you want decently realistic newtonian physics with shooting stuff go play Kerbal Space Program with the World War K mod.
