They don't have unlimited resources. No matter how well Team Avatar did (and it sounds like they did quite well), they still have to weigh how long it'll take and how much manpower it'd take against other areas of the game (like continuing to fix Flying in Space, aka "the actual game"). They did this, and decided it can't be done now, so their work gets shelved. They can still pick it up later, they just can't do it right now.

This isn't difficult to understand.

That post was difficult to understand.

1. Team Avatar were formed to prototype 'meaningful' WiS gameplay.
That did not mean a /dance emote.
Our prototype focused around pve and pvp combat and exploration within 'Sites'.
The feedback from internal playtesting was immensely positive and we could all see it tying in supremely well with the current EvE ecology. Meaning that our WiS gameplay benefited the in-flight game and vice-versa. They should not be separate.
We showed the prototype at the last fanfest and to the CSM and got positive reactions from both groups of observers.
So the general direction we were going in was sound. We had faith in it but most importantly, it appeared that you did as well.

Thanks for posing that Mr. Dev. I am appeased, hell greatly pleased by CCP's vision for WIS, which is of actual gameplay instead of barbies & emoting. However I am sure that the rest of us would like more details on WIS in form of an official devblog or presentation, please release those asap when you feel the time is right. I am overjoyed that the soul of EVE will not be contaminated by cheesy frivolous crap. You barbie lovers are SOL lol getout.

Happy to get a response from a dev. A bit of a bittersweet read in some ways, but, ultimately, it's comforting to know it's something CCP will do (am I allowed to be that certain?) in the future. That future can't come fast enough for me lol, but hey, I've waited this long, what's a few more years, eh? Besides, waiting never killed anyone...unless you were like trapped in the middle of nowhere with no food or shelter or anything and you were waiting for a rescue. I suppose waiting is technically the killer there, but I would say it's probably more along the lines of starvation or some disease or somet- sorry, what was I saying agin?

Oh yeah, right. Well, all I can really say is thank you, CCP RedDawn. Some news, good or bad, is better than none at all. I guess for now I'll just continuing blowing stuff up in space, shooting people in the face (DUST in case you were wondering what I meant lol...), and just waiting for the day the next time WiS is mentioned, it's followed by a release date.

But before all that, I'm going to make myself breakfast because I am starving.

Hi all and thanks for this thread.

I was part of Team Avatar (or Team Absent as we seem to be now known as) and personally, reading through every page has been a bit of a rollercoaster to be honest. From the highs of the continued demand for WiS and it's lack of presence, to the lows of people still tagging it with 'barbie' and not seeing the overall potential of WiS.

Please don't misunderstand. The dismissive 'space barbie' comments haven't been aimed at CCP or WiS itself, but at the posters who actually want WiS to be nothing more than a Space-Second Life where dressing-up their avatar in the mirror and /dance emotes in a pretend bar are considered the heights of compelling gameplay. There have been a number of posters who actually rolled their eyes and grumbled when Team Avatar started talking about prototyping gameplay content, who are opposed any of those nasty consequential actions interfering with the social environments and NeX purchases, and who think that if only CCP had stood their ground last summer over the post-Incarna revolt, then Eve would now be entering a golden age of gameplay-vacuum communal spaces and $70 monocles, with millions of new players flocking to Eve's doors so that they can drink pretend beer in a pretend pub and watch pretend exotic dancers, whilst never looking at any of that silly spaceship gameplay nonsense.

I, and I'm sure most of the posters in this thread, want to see WiS development, but we want to see it developed in a way which ties into and enriches the wider Eve environment, and we were enthusiastic about Team Avatar's work (if somewhat baffled as to why it had taken 6 years of development before CCP had thought to start working on the gameplay). Most of all, we were glad to see the back of the pre-Incarna 'get our subscribers to pay for Eve twice, and to hell with giving them anything fun to do' attitude which soured matters greatly.

Thanks for all your work, RedDawn and the rest of TA.

But all the WiS/anbulation/Incarna cycles never been that. None, nor in CCP nor in the playerbase never talked, thought or asked for it in these terms. The space babrie crap is only for silly forum trolling and just to vent some hostility/frustration in a game.

Why can't we have it all? The space barbie dress-up part and the going out to explore and shoot people in the face part. Can't go around abandoned, hostile sleeper space stations while wearing run-of-the-mill spacesuits now can we? Must have high heels and latex catsuits Lol

Thank you for your post. I think alot of us really just needed some confirmation. It's uplifting to know that CCP do in fact intend on implementing this eventually, which is something that hasn't been made clear yet, so thanks again for that.

Thank you for your post. But tell me, what about the original plans for WiS? Establishments and the like. What was CCP planning before the summer of rage? What happened to those assets? Are they shelved, or have they been tossed down a deep hole only to feed Cthulhu?

There have been many ideas for the years about everything avatar and WIS related. Too many ideas to count and apply ingame. People do not realize this, it was clearly too much to read and comprehend.

Personally, I have seen people roleplaying and emoting in LotRO with their characters. How someone can assume they were destroying the game. Lol

Ever since I first heard about walking in stations I was thinking of all the potential and looking forward to all the other things I could do to pass the time when I was in the mood. I was imagining that it would bring an element somewhat reminiscent of the FIS world where by players could do whatever they wanted, be it gamble their isk away in bars, be a bar owner, have a corporation store, have meetings with presentations, craft all manner of items that we could adorn our lavish quarters with eventually leading to exploration of planets and systems.

We were even shown working demonstrations of just that to wet our appetites at what we could expect when we disembarked.

The reality of what we got was a complete disappointment, a cell that served no purpose, no possibility to adventure or explore and now the tiny glimmer of delivering a very small part of what I first imagined has now been shelved, and I really don't hold out much hope that we will ever see the complete sci-fi simulator.

WIS was never about space barbies, it was about delivering a complete living universe where you can do whatever you want to do, manufacturing, industry, exploration, pvp in space blowing ships up, or running the best gambling den in the system, WIS and FIS should complement each other and make EVE a better game, giving people more choice and attracting new players.

I think Incarna completely lost the ideals and concept of EVE and no one would want to see WIS implemented in the way it was headed, but I know a lot of people don't like the idea of WIS being on the scrap heap of failed features.

Agreed, generally, but just because other, sillier games have stupid /emotes doesn't mean that /emotes are stupid. If you make them actual expressions and motions that actual people would make, they have a place.

Just make the gestures realistic and focus communication, instead of /dance, /train and /sexy, and it makes perfect sense to have them. Otherwise we're just doing our stiff catwalk stride everywhere, wearing our straight-ahead runway model stare all the time, and how realistic is that?

If you look at "a future vision," there are several emotes of the kind I'm describing.

Capitain Quarters were a good idea.

Was made to serve two major purpose:

1. To facilitate new players approaching EvE. A major limit for EvE in regard of retain new players always been the lack of
of an avatar rappresentation of their character. A large part of players (also the most experienced in MMORPG) have issue in respect of this. I'm sure many of us had to deal with this trying to bring our friends in EvE.

2. To act as content delivery and to smooth the harsh learning curve of EvE. To give them access to informations and options in a more intuitive, pelaseable and imemrsive way. Betetr than tell to them they have to study PDF docs and Excell spreadsheets.

Both this crucial needs are still here.

Of course then leaving the CQ alone had no sense, to work they had to be expanded and intergated with the gameplay.

And yes, afer years of hype everyone was disappointed to see the simple CQ sold as "incarna"

just to answer something I read.. they don't have unlimited resources...
Hummm right ..OK but WHO asked for dust514? all the time , resources they put in dust it would be WISE ti put it IN EvE (Wis) instead ..... not agree?

Because I would be very happy to go close to a planet or a moon and teleport myself(yes I'm not a ship) on that planet .. but guess what ..!!

CCP it's time to remove Off Grid Boost and Put Them on Killmail too, add Logi on killmails .... Open that damn door !!

you shall all bow and pray BoB

There are two issues here: The first, and lesser, is to do avatars right, so they actually look and act like (extremely wealthy and powerful) people. This is what gets derided as "barbies," when it's really a verisimilitude, individuation, and richness of communication that would be entirely unique to EVE. There are very few MMOs that do this well, and I only say "very few" because there are a number that I'm not familiar with.

The second, and greater, is that avatar gameplay directly adds a completely different kind of game play to EVE. It's not armor and weapon loadouts like DUST and FiS. It won't be FPS gameplay, because that's DUST. You're a ship captain, not elite infantry. So there are two immediate consequences of leaving your pod:

1) CONCORD is no longer tracking your every move;

2) You are just a wet bag of meat, maybe with a knife or a sidearm and a few utility devices.

Therefore, avatar gameplay has the potential to be extremely dangerous: You're probably off CONCORD's radar for a reason, and you're no longer safely tucked away in a kilometer-long engine of destruction. Scatim Helicon, in particular, had a whole bunch of good ideas that riffed on this, but there are many more scattered among the various threads. It can be anything from Rainbow Six style infiltration to Penumbra style survival horror--only with other players, not just computer AI. And, yes, just as you can fly your ship into a system full of blues and relax a bit, you should also be able to navigate your meatbag into corp offices or social areas, because anyone who thinks those are safe also thinks that their ship is totally safe in a sea of blues, and it's just a matter of time before they're in for a rude surprise. This is EVE, after all.

Things like corp offices can be extremely utilitarian. The mapping and tactical functionality that CCP mocked up years ago would be concretely useful and valuable, to loyal corpmates and spies alike.
