One word: NICE.

Further, to all the rabble. (Places torch and pitchfork on the ground) I'm with you all rabble rousing, but you have got to admit this is pretty cool.

It's meh at best as far as I'm concerned.

Now if an animation could be added where my toon is eating popcorn and drinking a Quafe, that might be cool.

Still that's not what I came here for.

also got this.
was a lot easier when you use some screen recording software and then slow it down so you have time to enter the hex numbers.

Now THIS is one real reason why Incarna have a future.

I don't know if you are aware, but this one feature opens up so many doors (uhmmm... yeah.... not those doors).

You have effectively created a whole new content expansion with only this "minor" gesture. EVE just got richer for a market of immersion boosting content. Players building content for other players for fun and/or ISK, player made in-game commercials about space ships, corporation identity videos looping in the CQ, CQ video contests... the options are endless. Fantastic move, CCP!!!

... and, all you had to do is think outside of the box.

I love it.

Is it just me, but didn't a dev mention something about streaming content/programming via this "screen"? I may have dreamed it, but I feel sure I read that somewhere.

Being able to use your own videos is cool, but using CQ is not worth it.

Of course, knowing our players, we are of course absolutely certain than none of you would ever, ever think of putting anything even remotely questionable on your screen, given the total lack of constraints and the rock solid moral high ground on which our pilots firmly stand...

I giggled. Now, when are the other blogs comming out?

Now, most companies would have branded this as a defect and “fixed it” by doing checksum validations on the files or something equally boring. But not us.

We will present something players figured out as our own accomplishment.

i see it as more of a "rather than ban people for what is basically an exploit and breach of a eula, we are instead going make it a feature"

eve is all about player created content and this is an extension of that, and at no point in that dev blog do ccp take credit for it, other than the whole not banning people and "fixing" it thing, they clearly state that players are responsible and let others that mgiht not have known about it know that it is possible.

im also guessing this dev blog came about as a result of a recent thread in gd askign for an official ccp stance on several possible exploits/rule violations, some of which have been around since at least 2007, and which included this "feature". its good to see them communicating more and actually supporting something that would usually be concidered an exploit and against the eula.

speacking of the eula, does this mean there will be an update to it so that modifying the vid screens contents is excluded from the "do not tamper with the client" clause? it would help remvoe some confusion, espedcially in a couple of years with this thread and dev blog are burried and would cut down on the number of petitions relating to this

Great, now I can be even more nostalgic watching the subwarp races I used to participate in, from back when they were still around.

Ah, the bittersweetness...

Clever move of CCP, and the right thing to do at this time.
However it would have been even more clever to have foreseen how this were gonna get "haxored", and to make it a feature of sorts to begin with.

bink format you say. Would that be the 2nd definition?

Not too sure this is needed; But given what I suspect that it didn't take much effort given all the time in the station thing you spent that I suppose can't complain. Though who will be the first to watch xxx in there's and post First will be the main question I'm comming away from this.

Now if you were to add the ability to record ingame action like you can in TeamFotress2, then this would have alot more going for it. Is that something you plan on working on, or adding. Or is fraps an area you plan on leaving alone and it's just the likes of VLC that need to worry here :).

Either way, feature wise - who's it goona hurt with the flat screen TV, but be more interesting reading how people use it than the feature itself, currently.

Ok, so we can put converted video's in a folder...

But what if I would ask others to fill the void for me? Say that news blogs (EVEnews24 for example) made a video of the most recent news for us. And each time that there is an update, it is placed in that DIR automatically... Few things that could make this work;

- A volunteer making a news roll and converting it
- Uploading it to server X
- Tool that downloads stuff from server X
- Puts the stuff in the said DIR (set by user)
- Deletes the stuff out of the DIR on user preferred setting (once a day, week, etc)

This way I would have a relax place to watch the news, while trading or waiting for everyone's endless jumps to our op.

I've been doing this since it was first discovered, pointless but extremely fun. Really glad you're not disabling our ability to do this, and I think a lot more features could be added into the future, such as zooming in on the holographic display itself and being able to stream content. All local of course.

Known with that, but not with computerstuff like coding. Besides that, knowing the EVE player base, someone here will be far better at duplicating the weel as I am.

Let us put a text file in there with URLs to streaming content and give us a remote control. Then I could jump stream eve radio, or even fanfest in my CQ.

This is awesome. Not game changing by any means and I really hope this isn't what they meant by big changes are coming but you have to give them props. They are the only company I know of save for flight simulator who is cool with you modifying their program and even shows you how to do it. That said I knew about this before and didn't do it for concerns about repercussions as well as to me playing a video of something else would detract from the environment of EVE. Maybe better EVE videos though.
