Where did the fun go?

Until now I've never put time into playing Eve. Sure back in the day I dipped my toe into the water with the old trial account but other commitments kept me from playing it for more than a short while. The one thing I did do ' back then' was read up on the forums. That was a bit of entertainment all on its own. Epic multi page threads on a myriad of subjects. Corporate intrigue, alliance warfare, double crosses, pirate action, gank fests, and scams all could be found. Most if not all were colorfully written posts with witty responses and many had counter posts also.

Things arent so busy for me now. With that I've got time to play this game. Remembering how much fun I had reading the forums I'd search em out while at lunch or on break. There's just no describing how disappointed I'm am . These days the forums seem so.....well to put it mildly ...bland. There's no flavor anymore. There's no real drama. Everyone is so ...civil. Seriously it makes no sense considering the idea of 'civility' ,particularly in this game , goes out the window as soon as you undock. I'm not talking RL racists, social or sexists comments. Just the good old fashion flames or posts sticking it to this weeks number one bad guy.

Now let me makes this abundantly clear I am in NO way questioning the rules on what can and can't be posted here on the Eve forums. It's thier space and their rules. Same for the moderators. You guys either get paid or volunteer to enforce the rules. That's all good by me.

That said , I can't believe that the complete win that was once in the forums just died. I thinks it's moved on to another place that wasn't so 'structured'. My question is ..where?

Respond here but if it's rule breaking then send me some info via email.

Thanks

Well, I suppose discussing the forum moderation is prohibited, so this thread may not last long. But I agree. This thread would not have made it to 7 pages nowadays.

As for your question: Because the drama, name calling, alt posting and pure gold that was the forum of old has now become impossible here, the real action has moved to r/eve, much to my dismay.

I see
So it went the way of less 'structured' figuratively and literally.

Can't say I blame you about being dismayed. Thanks for the info all the same.

I take exception.

My posts are always full of wit and merry wisdom.

You do have a point though, forum posters, not just in this game, went to other places, mainly because game makers think the forums are a place to be policed, not a place to have fun. And certainly not a place to sell their games.

Which is remarkably odd, given the etymology of the word "forum".

I've always thought these forums remarkably similar to the Runescape ones, they seem to have had the same underlying designer. Perhaps it was a package forum creator back in the 1990s that they were made on.

The problem is obvious.

Forum owners thought they had to police negatively, and never really put much effort into rewarding forum fun.

So people left in order to find freedom.

But it's sort of comforting sitting around the dying campfire talking about the glory days and the same old same old.

The ISDs destroyed everything.

General discussion used to be great. but then the ISDs started banning like you would not believe.

All the fun died.

These forums have sucked for the last few years. Nowadays it's not surprising to find numerous threads that have been edited, moved, locked or outright deleted. The devs have basically abandoned any active participation in discussion here other than the occasional token comment or update - the irony of course being that these are the official EVE forums...

No one is really allowed to offer a strong, dissenting opinion anymore. Perish the thought of even offering constructive criticism, because it only takes one adverse misinterpreted comment to have it labelled as a rant and locked. Heck, you can't even post public service announcements without having them moved to a 'more appropriate forum' (read: burried).

So yeah, understandably players have flocked to Reddit which, while containing some gems - is filled with endless memes, killmails and general bullsh*t. That and Twitter, although now God forbid CCP seems to be embracing Facebook.

Id like to keep this discussion honest but constructive. Let's not turn this into bash the mods.

I don't think anyone is bashing the mods - but you're not really free to express much on the way of opinions anymore. I fully expect this thead to be locked or outright deleted within 48 houra. It's funny because players get censored here, then go on Reddit with the same legitimate concerns and actually get responded to by devs and CSM members to prevent a massive sh*tstorm. Oh, the irony is not lost on me at all...

Ok now I'm keenly interested in this.
You're saying that Eve representatives respond to post subjects written on Reddit that have been summarily deleted or locked on their own forums? There's no end to the irony on that .

Yes. A guy that had his account hacked and had to wait 3 weeks for a reply from CCP posted the full details on Reddit. He got several CSM replies and even a dev response that included a nice graph showing how preoccupied CCP customer service has been since the email/authentication f*ckup with Ascendancy.

Another guy that got banned for helping team mates on a glitched stargate had his thread outright deleted here (it's still active on Reddit). My followup PSA on this got moved out of General Discussion and burried in another thread.

And now having mentioned both of these, I fully expcet to see this thread edited or locked.

Can anyone else corroborate on this?
Also if this is true why aren't DEVs reevaluating how they handle issues like it ?

That's funny. Don't take my word for it, though. There are numerous examples that others would probably bo only too happy to share... albeit, briefly.

I'm just asking for additional sources. Nothing was implied.
I'm considering putting up money for an Omega account. However, if I have legitimate issues, post my concerns on the forums, and be punished for it, what incentive is there handing CCP my money?

quite a few years ago these forums were nothing but fun.

Nullsec alliances used to go to war in nullsec and on GD.

The epic thread posts were epic.

1. Remember when mintchiplol was made a Dev.
2. Remember the Mittans thread when he was banned for a silly drunken statement.
3. I remember when someone posted pics of CCP punky as a Zombie and everyone laughed along including her.
4. When the character portraits changed and a epic gay character thread rolled through GD
5. Trolling was funny and corps went to war over it
6. No one really insulted the Devs and they rolled with it

None of this would happen today

Yes it's true.

I guess it's probably not in many devs position descriptions to spend their workday answering posts in the forum; and outside work they have their own private lives and are free to use whatever social networks they want.

That they often choose to answer questions on reddit isn't a bad thing. It's not like it's CCP policy. Just devs hanging out with the community outside work.

Plus, this forum is pretty limited in functionality.

I wasn't playing EVE at the time, but I did read quite about it afterwards... but you're right. A lot of the good-natured jabs and poking fun at others' expense just wouldn't happen now. Stick meet a**...

Forums are not where issues get sorted out.
