Actually, they're mostly afraid of you (well, of newbies in general), because a newbie is an unknown person who COULD steal the corp assets, which can be significant. Your hangar is secure, and you don't really have anything worth stealing (I'm assuming you don't have billions already - maybe you do, if you've sold a PLEX), but a corp may have ships in an exposed hangar and money in an exposed wallet, free for the taking, because the corp hangars are meant for sharing not for keeping things locked up.

We like newbies because we like the game and we like when newcomers are interested in it, so the most likely scenario when you join a corp is that you'll be welcomed. At worst, they'll be indifferent or be jerks, and you can just leave and put them on /ignore.

Ultimately, it's like in RL; join, see what happens, move on to another corp, if you don't like. With the added perks that you have internet anonymity, harassment is against the rules, and it's just a game - at most you'll lose the pixels of a ship in an attack, no big deal.

you can google any word followed the the word "definition" and a basic definition as well as several links to online dictionaries will come up. However I would much rather have an actual dictionary around. I love dictionaries.

Often with abbreviations in this game you and do better by asking google what it means. Example:

Well, you should. EVE is a PVP game, rather boring unless spaceships explode. Other people's spaceships, hopefully.

In most cases, though, they just see what ship you're flying and make a quick decision whether you're an easy target or they should run away from you. Combat is pretty fast, not much time to check who's who, and/or personalities.

Don't worry about bounties, pretty much everyone has one and if someone kills you they only receive 20% of your ships value; in your case you're still in frigates and destroyers, their ammo costs more than the bounty payment.

We newbies have SOOOO much more to worry about than bounties, or getting killed in some system. Some advice here from a fellow newcomer:

STAY in the rookie areas of HiSec until you feel like you are ready to spread your wings. Usually, you have that first "There is more to this game and I want to go try it" moment. That feeling is when you think you have some things wired and you might think that you might be a little bored. It means you are comfortable in your current surroundings, that's a bad feeling! I'll explain why in a moment.

Once you go to move around, grab your rookie ship if you've moved out of it to something snazzier, and go toodle about space. Go find Jita or some other local major trade hub. If your "Set Destination" is set up correctly, you'll never travel though LowSec and most folks leave the Rookie Ships alone... for the most part. Even if you get jumped and killed, the worst that happens is you lost a free ship and ended magically back in your Home Station. Learn from it and get back on the horse and go back out... in a new free Rookie ship! Talk to people, find corporation buddies, realize that danger lurks around every corner (like a bad horror movie!) and even if you get killed, poof!, you're back at home with a new free ship. Nothing lost.

Why am I advising you to go out and possibly get killed? Because once it's happened to you a time or two you realize that death is a minor set back. By the time it becomes a 'major' one, you are making so much ISK that... yup... it's just a minor one again!

Eventually, once in a corporation with lots of friends, getting all cozy and comfortable again, even with being killed, THEN you need to shift it up because it's at that point that you get complacent, and bored. Never get bored. EVE has about a billion things to do in it and much of it all starts with "What if..." I think those are the two most glorious and dangerous words in EVE... what if...

Getting killed a few times is one of the best things you can do to improve your enjoyment of the game. I recommend it strongly. Get in a rookie ship and fly into nullsec, and see how many systems you can do. Don't stop trying until you do at least 50 systems in a row.

That's what I was doing! lol. I was trying to see how far I could go. I was looking for this place called fountain that I read about. I got there, then I got killed lol. But I mined a little bit too just to be cheeky :)
