Hello. My name is Tiffany. I am from Australia.

I just started playing this video game (my first one ever!) and have been finding it very hard to understand. Someone told me I should put a post on here and introduce myself so here I am lol. Introducing myself. Hopefully there are some people out there that read this and play this as well that might be able to show me a few things or explain how everything works and what I need to do to get an understanding of it all.

I didn't think it would be so hard. One person in the game just messaged me after I asked a question and said that it wasn't a girls game and to go and play the Sims instead so I kind of want to make sure I get this now.

Tiff.

Just like a butterfly, I'm pretty to look at but hard to catch :)

Okay... serious response now.

Welcome to EVE Tiffany Hope. If you have any questions about the game, you can ask them in this section of the forum without having to deal with [too much] trolling.

As for the "this is a boy's game" comment... ignore it. In EVE you will deal with a lot of stuff like this. Not sexist comments per se... but a lot of "shitstirring." Thick skin is kind of a requirement as a lot of people like to provoke others or will rush to judgement based on what you sound like or look like in your character pic.

And now I realize that I may have just bitten some sneaky trollbait.

Oh well... gotta give people the benefit of the doubt in this forum section.

There are girls that play this game. So who ever told you that was being an ass. However it probably is not the game for most girls out there but it does not have to be for most it only has to be for you.

This game is famous for it's huge learning cliff. However with some help and guidance you can quickly become comfortable. I'd be more than happy to help you in what ever way that I can. If you have question ask away. If you would rather mail me questions you can do that as well.

Since you haven't played other games I don't have to tell you to forget everything that you have learned in other MMOs since you haven't.

I will however tell you that this game is an MMO and as such is intended to be multiplayer. What makes or breaks this game is the friends you make. So you are starting off the right way if you ask me.

A corpmate of mine upon sitting cloaked in a wormhole combat site watching a guy in a shinny ship run it solo said in corp chat "he's got to be bait" (based on the way the guy was behaving). Right after that he said " but some bait is so good you just have to bite".

Hi Ace,

I didn't think anyone would reply lol.

I'm happy to meet someone that is from Australia too! I am Queensland time but I will get into the game when I finish work.

I will need to find out what DT, Team speak, Spectre, pvp, pve all mean. Oh and Gank. So I will get back to you once I have googled all of that :)

I am not sure how to add people in the game yet or where my watch list is so I will work on that one too.

DT = Down time. It's when CCP shuts down the game for about 15 minutes or so every day at I think 11:00 am GMT without using DST. GMT is Greenwich mean time also know as UTC.

Team speak is an audio chat app for groups. It is used in MMOs alot for coordinating group efforts. Like fleet ops in this game or raids in other games or battlefields etc... anything where groups of people need to operate and have "comms" while playing.

Spectre fleet is an NPSI (Not Purple Shoot It ) group that does public roams and shoots anyone not in fleet.

Gank just means you are going to go blow up the guy that said that to you regardless of what concord thinks about the interaction.

Haha! All good, I am Sydney/Coast, so shouldn't be much off, and DT is shutdown, happens everynight 10PM.. Or 11PM.. I can't actually recall, haha! The game shuts down for 5-30 minutes to refresh and update.

TeamSpeak is an out of game program that lets you talk to other people, like a phone call but via the computer, if you download it it would help me a lot so I can do stuff at the same time, also it is easy to talk about things via voice rather then text, and don't worry I will talk you through everything I can tonight :) just be online and I will take it from there, I will add your character and will wait for you to log, have a good day till then.

@ergherhdfgh, thank you, didn't see your post till after I posted mine :)

Thank you though. I will just have to be careful who I talk to I guess lol.

Hello, ok so I need to know this game like you do! lol

I don't think I can use Team speak then because I don't have a phone that uses apps?

Spectre people are the bad guys in the game then?

Ok I understand Gank now but I don't know his name any more and I would feel bad if we killed his ship though. From what I have read it takes lots to get good ships and stuff and I will just ignore those people so it's ok :)

Trolling is when you say something, especially on an internet posting forum, that is intended to get a reaction from people. For example you could be trolling just by pretending to not know what we are talking about. You could also be trolling by pretending to be a damsel in distress in this video game that actually has a mission called damsel in distress.

So it's not making fun of people. It is often just saying stupid things just to set people off. Also trolling is frowned up in the NC Q&A.

good or bad are not things that exist in this game. At least not objectively and probably not at all.

So, here's an EVE Lexicon so you don't have to google that stuff.

EVE is a strategy game; the idea is to conquer space and make a home out of it for your group of people. But it's played from the individual's point of view, so instead of a single player ordering his fleet of ships to conquer the map, you and friends each fly individual ships, and hopefully use the correct tactics and strategy to win. Against other players. PVP.

The game does not have classes (warrior, mage, thief, etc.); the skills that unlock the ships and the weapons are available for anyone to train. The advanced skills have some prerequisite basic skills that must be trained first, but otherwise, anything you want to add to your character, you can. It just takes time to train. Skills give small bonuses, 5% to this and that, and the idea is that you accumulate many bonuses so your overall fighting effectiveness increases.

There are many skills; a combat pilot can have 160+ different skills. The skills are categorized as follows:
- ship skills unlock new ships for you
- weapon skills (gunnery, missiles, drones) - train the specific weapons that your ship requires
- support skills (armor, shields, navigation, targeting, engineering, electronics) - train to make all your ships perform better
- non-combat skills (trade, industry, reprocessing, corporations, etc.) - train as needed or if interested

Ships are roles; if you want to perform a role within the fleet, you fly the appropriate ship with the appropriate weapons or other modules installed. So you want to unlock a selection of ships (various frigates, cruisers, transport ships, mining / industry, etc), so that you can choose and switch and not be bored, but at the same time trying to unlock all of them will take too long and is somewhat pointless, because each race (Amarr, Gallente, Caldari, Minmatar) has ships to cover the common roles / tasks.

The game does have one "grind"; you must manage your money (ISK). Ships cost money, and they get destroyed in the fights, so you must use the various money-making activities periodically to rebuild your savings.

The in-game Market interface is also an encyclopedia; you can look up anything, and instead of buying, just click the i (show info) button, and look at the stats. Also check out the Ships Chart for stats on all the ships. And keep in mind that the entire economy is player-driven; we manufacture ships, weapons, ammo, and all the gear, and we trade it all and use it.

In any case, as a newbie you should do the career agent missions (they give you about 10 million ISK worth of ships, skills, and modules), and otherwise try everything to see what you may like to do. And also, ask lots of questions, esp. in this forum, we love questions here.

The game has been around for a while, so there are very good game-related websites maintained by players. A good one is the EVE University wiki, just follow the links and read up, they explain a lot of stuff.

TS ( teamspeak ) is not an app for your phone ( well maybe they have a phone version but that is not how it's typically used ). TS is an app that you put on your computer and talk with other people in a group setting. You could have hundreds of people in the same channel taking orders from one FC ( fleet commander ) .

If you're new, I'd suggest running the career missions. You get a few new ships and skill books as well as a taste of a few things that New Eden has to offer.

Don't mind what people say in chat. People will try to pull you off your square just to see if they can. Don't give them any tears for the jar.

Find a player corp. Try one out and if it doesn't fit, don't be afraid to find another until you land somewhere comfortable.

Don't fly what you cannot afford to lose. Even in high security space you can lose your ship so until you can afford it fly cheap and effective.

The most important thing is, have fun! Don't worry about what the other guy is doing or has.

EvE is a long haul game. Have patience and you'll get along famously.

I FC for Spectre, we aren't bad guys, we are content generators, and we work with other groups to bring good fights, we have fun, our opponents have fun, PvP'ers should PvP for the joy of it, not for win or loss, I enjoy PvP heavily, also enjoy PvE, but we aren't the bad guys, we are netral if anything, cause we engage pirates and criminals and people roaming Low Sec and Null Sec, who are all looking for PvP by virtue of being there. Plus, if we were the bad guys, why would I be happy and willing to help newer players? Even if they never join a Spectre Fleet, I enjoy making friends, it is great when you log in and people are already saying hello and stuff :)

Yeah as others said Ts3 is for your computer, it is a program, it is free, and all you need is a computer to use it, it is a great program, I will talk you through some other ones you will need, like PyFa, EFT, things that will help you in the long run.

Ok I think I am kind of getting some of this now lol. I don't mean to be rude but I cant reply to all of the posts on here as I am not fast on the keyboard and lots of people are on here I think.

I don't want to come across as a "damsel in distress" or waste anyone's time. I'm really sorry If I offended you or if I am being a troller. I am just trying to find a way to understand the game. This seems like an easy way which goes well with my lazy personality lol.

Voice communications (voice comms) are used because in the heat of battle you can't take the time to type instructions to your fleet buddies. The game has voice comm capabilities, but players prefer to use third party programs (Ventrillo, TeamSpeak, or Mumble), because if the game crashes the voice comms won't and they can still organize everyone to log back in and continue the fight. Here is a video that shows voice-comms in action.

But voice comms are for later; as a newbie learning the game you can certainly do ok without voice.

As a warning, this game is about combat between players, and people get competitive to the point where they'll start throwing insults just to get you to falter or to dissuade you from killing them. It's not always friendly, and if they detect that you are new they may try to take advantage of your lack of knowledge about the game.

The game allows "bad" activities such as theft, scamming, espionage, piracy, etc.; if you want to be a bad guy you can, in this game. As a result, people will be slow to trust you, and you shouldn't trust anyone you don't know, and if a deal appears too good to be true, then it's probably a scam.
