DDOS = Distributed Denial of Service

the key part is "Distributed"
definition --> see 3.a

What that all means in English

Lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of computers are being used to overload CCP's network infrastructure by bombarding it with data transmission requests.

This means legitimate users (that's us btw) cannot access it, because it's overloaded.

You don't prevent these attacks by turning a computer off and back on again.

Actually I'm ridiculing your ineptitude and stupidity.
I am as I type, still sniggering at your buffoonery.

I know, it's very wrong of me.
I am a bad person for mocking the afflicted.

I instead challenge you to provide a method or an example of one that was able to stop one.

There are several companies that provide DDoS protection, just do a Google search 'DDoS Protection'. One such company is VeriSign, a well known international company.

As far as what one can do in the event of a DDoS attack, you can also try Google and Wikipedia, The info below is a c&p of a small section of that page from Wikipedia. You'll need to go to Wikipedia for more detailed information.

"Handling
Defensive responses to denial-of-service attacks typically involves the use of a combination of attack detection, traffic classification and response tools, aiming to block traffic that they identify as illegitimate and allow traffic that they identify as legitimate"

Companies can also buy insurance against such attacks.

DDoS is nothing new, it is quite old school really, and there's lots of information on the net about it, how to prevent it, and how to stop it.

Someone is messing with the wrong people...

One does not simply interrupt our internet spaceships

and I would like to thank CCP for their hard work to ensure that our internet spaceships remain to be a reality.

Throughout the day the servers have been terribly unstable and it seems to be continuing into the night. Is CCP going to fix this DDoS crap or are we destined to be unable to play for days? It's seriously not hard to safeguard against a DDoS.

If seriously not hard to safeguard against a DDoS is pulling the plug on your internet connection yes it's not that hard to protect your internet space ship game against a DDoS. That's what one European country did.Roll It was Estonia I think.

Everyone here does realize that you can still log in through the 'evefile' in the Bin while the launcher doesn't work right? (Provided that you're not using steam). Server stability is still questionable though.

What about ship losses due to ddos attack ? Are they will be reimbursed?

Umm nope there is no reimbursement as it is outside CCP control.

If you want reimbursement go to the DDos hackers and ask the for your reimbursement for the lost ships Big smile
