Yes, the Iowa is very heavily armored for her generation but that won't save her from a nuke or a modern anti-ship systems. Even the US Navy' rail gun prototype would cause serious damage, imagine what a sabot fired at those speeds would do.

I do remember the attack on USS Cole and while it is tragic that 17 servicemen lost their lives, it is fortunately that the terrorists went with a big pile of explosives rather than a shaped charge. The outcome would have been even more catastrophic.

Nuke is game over obviously, but the rounds that the iowa could fire weighed 3100 pounds for the armor piercing variety, so about 27000 pounds with all 9 turrets doing a full volley...That's a lot of kinetic energy hitting a target ship, and there was another class planned( but never built), the Montana class with even more armor than the Iowa and a Quad triple 16 inch turrets on a hull clocking in at 70 000+ tons if they were built.

The focus changed to building more aircraft carriers for the pacific war, so the Montana's were never built and thus the yamato class from japan remains the biggest and heaviest ever built.

The sister ship of the yamato took 17, 500 pound bombs and 19 torpedos to sink in a 3 1/2 hour battle involving 350 planes.... a massive fight for a single ship, but she went down swinging right to the end.

Interesting how we went from talking about the designs of space ships in computer games to basically warship pron. P

Tis quiet indeed, though ben left a message saying that if we have anything more important saved in the star citizen folder like pictures from the game, to remove them and save them somewhere else since it'll be deleted once the update is done.

Could be, may be, but we'll see if it is released....Seems they're preparing for it.

I, for one, think the ships look pants compared to the ships in E:D. :P

It's an alpha release after all, then there's still the beta to go thru, and then the final release.....Bugs, I expect plenty.

11.5 GB update......And this is just the first part of the DFM, there's 2 more releases, the single player, the tools to create content and run a server, and ultimately, the public universe download.

Game is going to be huge in terms of size once fully complete....Shocked

I just downloaded the Arena Commander this morning, I have to say it looks absolutely breathtaking. In third person view from outside of the ship the level of realism and detail is absolutely astounding. The solar flares and visual effects are extremely tastefully done and the lighting is fairly awesome.

The 2 available modes so far are free-flight and a swarm mode wherein you attack rats with some corp mates. Both fairly basic gameplay wise but the visuals are drool worthy and the combat is great (I only have a cheapo ship with lasers though, Minmatar projectiles FTW). The cockpit UI is really nice and functional with info on shield/weapon/range status etc all on holographic interface elements (much like some of the UI in the CQ).

It's not really comparable to Eve other than SPACESHIPS of course, but I have to say I am extremely excited to see how the final game ends up, it really feels like next level graphics and if the gameplay can match it will be fairly amazing. Who knows when the final product will be finished though.

Eve for tactical warfare, SC for space combat and Arma 3 for FPS will do nicely for me.

Great for those of us stuck at work. Hey at least people are testing the release for me before I get home. :)

The visuals are awesome indeed, and it works fine with a quad crossfire setup, but the joystick control is still a little too sloppy like there's too much inertia between the time an imput is given on the joystick, and the time the ship reacts to said joystick imput.

Couple of visual glitches when ending the session too, but nothing major and yes, the holographic displays on either side show everything you'd ever need information wise, even the G-loads involved and if you're weapons are overheating, shield and ship damage to both you and the target ship.

There's about 25 functions to memorize if using a keyboard, and if getting a joystick, get one with a lot of buttons to map so your hands never have to reach for the keyboard.....I mean there's even flares and chaff to dispense if needed.

Bottom line, if this is just the alpha of the initial release, we're in for one hell of a ride with the full game.

Look! A nakid Battleship!

Q: Should we be worried? A: Nope. (...) Worry a lot if Fozzie, Masterplan, Rise, Veritas, Bettik, Ytterbium, Scarpia, Arrow, or even Greyscale leaves. Worry a little if Punkturis, karkur, SoniClover, Affinity, Goliath, or Xhagen leaves.

What Aspalis said. Also not everyone lives in your timezone.

Played the SP mode a bunch last night. My impressions, highlights first.

Graphics: Lets get this out of the way right now. It runs pretty much butter smooth on my system on very high (I didn't crank it higher yet), I didn't notice any lagginess or anything. CryEngine scales well, so even those I've seen running it on low looked impressive. Things come apart very nicely, though I noticed that if something was even slightly offscreen when hit with a missile the explosion effect was not rendered at all.

Controls: I don't have a HOTAS yet so I'm using mkb, and that definitely took some getting used to. It's sort of like a terrible version of War Thunder's controls, which I always found to be pretty damn good for a flight sim. Think Freelancer, but with an enormous deadzone and the jittery response of War Thunder on Historic (not full realism). There's a ton of arguing on the RSI forums about mkb vs joystick and which is overpowered.

They also need to find a proper balance of "space dust" so you have a better idea of how your ship is moving, because while turning off the engine assist is awesome for complex maneuvering it's not always easy to tell how you're moving vs your orientation.

AI: Hahahahahahahahahahahahahah

Sound: A very mixed bag, the atmospheric sounds like your engines and the voiceover work of the computer are excellent. The guns sound completely impotent, lacking any real punch and drama that cannons the size of a truck should have.

---

In general, after getting used to the controls and key bindings it was "alright" to play for a while. I have major issues with a lot of the presentation part of things, for one the game does not telegraph properly when you're getting shot. Often my first indicator is when my shields have dropped and the computer that never shuts up stops telling me about something overheating to say that I'm taking hull damage now. OR, you notice when your guns stop firing because half your ship is shredded. It's quite terrible.

The AI is just junk. I get killed more by them colliding with me, and once it actually severed my cockpit away from my craft. While this was cool, it took four AI enemies six minutes to land a single hit on me to kill the pilot.

Another annoyance, the HUD is supposed to be projected in the helmet visor, and for some stupid reason the game will often have various hud elements sliding off the screen based on how you're moving. I know it's because they're simulating g-forces, and your guy's head is bouncing around in the helmet, but that's just **** UI design. Realism is no excuse for it. The HUD is also totally cluttered, those missile lock animations should have been canned after their PAX demo but they only add noise to an already over-designed mess.

The point of a HUD is to be informative to the pilot, not to distract constantly from things they should be concentrating on.

Anyway, that's my initial impressions anyway. Will post more as I remember more things. For a pre-pre-pre-alpha it's pretty nice overall, though there's some serious circlejerking going on by RSI when you jump into your ship via all those long winded canned animations, only to find you forgot to pick up the helmet you left sitting on the other side of your hangar because the game never said you should have done that first.

They have a TON of work to do.
