Ive stopped reading the news lately. It's just too damn depressing.

Seems war, conflict, pain and suffering are everywhere and there is no end in sight. Standards of decency and morality are overhauled making the old immorality, the new morality. Lies are the new truths.

Professionalism is dead in just about any field of work you look at. I wont even get into how much politics stink these days.

My question is: has it always been this way? Or is it that obtaining this information has gotten easier thus giving the impression that it's getting worse?

Sometimes when it gets to be too much for me, I turn to gaming as an outlet. So EVE becomes therapeutic in the long run.

I guess it's all a matter of perspective.

The Crusades were well known for barbarism. Two of its worst moments were 1) right near the beginning when less militarily experienced crusaders got impatient and started attacking and looting Christian settlements before they even got to Jerusalem, committing terrible atrocities, and 2) around 1212 when a sizable force of French and German poor and children were given free passage to go liberate Jersusalem, only to be sold en masse into slavery in Tunisia and other Venetian hubs.

The activities of the Dutch in Africa are quite horrific. Not to mention the atrocities of African dictatorships committed on their own people. The latter is hardly a recent development.

The innumerable atrocities committed by Japan on most of Asia. My own grandmother spent years disguised as a boy to avoid the attention (to put it lightly) of Japanese soldiers in her country.

Take a look at disease, field medicine, and war casualties during the American Civil War.

These are just random examples. I think it is characteristically human to be savages to each other. It is also characteristically human to be kind.

Some speculate that depressing news stories are a tool used by western societies to keep people in a perpetual state of unease. I think it was 'State of Fear' by Michael Crichton where I saw it best explained in lay terms.

Just turn your TV off for a decade or so, I'd recommend it to anyone. I still watch films and tv series via Netflix etc but you bypass a lot of the advertising and subliminal propaganda, as well as the soundbite. It's really the soundbite and lack of attention span from viewers causing these shock tactics across media sites.

You get more indepth coverage on world affairs from journals or very focused reporting. I'm starting to lean away from newspapers too as there is so much crap to wade through before you get to anything remotely balanced or unbiased.

But ye, I'm pretty sure life has always been **** for a lot of people v0v

I read a book called "Amusing Ourselves to Death" which had an interesting perspective that it's easier for us to imagine an oppressive future to be like 1984, when reality is closer to an oppressive future that is more like Brave New World where media is your soma and you are only too addicted to continue consuming it and being powerless instead of being useful.

Noted that, ty. Actually thinking of sticking a thread up soonish for reading suggestions, I'm bored & have some time soon.

I'm studying History atm and we just did a segment on utopias and dystopias, it was probably my favourite bit of the course (despite the fact I prefer pre-modern typically). I've been an avid Sci-Fi reader for years and obviously some reflect the period they were written in heavily, particularly the ones written during the cold war. I never spotted the historical shift from utopia to dystopia though as a social trend. The 19th century political utopias I'd heard of but discarded as probably incredibly boring, but they look quite intriguing now.

They are more or less turning the children into basket cases with all this fear mongering. In the 70's they started feeding us this very same BS (as link above) and we gave them the bird. But now they are coming down on kids so hard with this BS it's traumatizing them. 40yrs later, the same total BS, exactly, and nothing has happened. We were all suppose to be dead decades ago from what they told us. Now they got the kids full of end of the world nightmares, the same crap they tried to push onto us. imo it's all about control.. and greed! And it covers many subjects, just the same tactic deployed now over a wider area. I would say it is driving us to our ends, self-fulfilling. You know, like the placebo effect? But in reverse... you're fine, but I'm going to give you this [sugar] pill that is going to make you sick and die. No society can function that way for long, it'll self-destruct. Btw, there IS actually some warming in the present day climate, but I've read somewhere that it's a pre-iceage warming - and I think it's the truth. The 2nd point IMO comes out of another thing: keeping slavery less and less visible, making slaves believe they're free (having even 50 crappy candidates on an election doesn't mean that a citizen has choise: he's just choosing between different sorts and odors of crap). Hence "cleaner" ways to murder, backing it with some ideological bullsh**, "law", "justice" etc (real justice almost never works against the real criminals, damn, it's they who write and bend the laws).
