Not unless someone's gone and Photoshopped all the corneas of the CCP employees who have seen the damage firsthand.

Which is both impressive and terrifying if you think on it too hard.

I also wouldn't speculate too hard on who dun it. CCP has ruled out the obvious.

Yeah so everyone saying that this stuff happens because CCP allows scamming or suicide ganking or whatever is just completely and utterly wrong.

This is from a post CCP Guard made after Fanfest 2013:

https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=2954896

CCP Guard wrote:
One of the lovely young ladies who worked the Fanfest venue felt the need to write a long complimentary note on Facebook about the guests at Fanfest. Here are some translated bits from the note:

"The compliment of the week goes to the players of EVE Online, especially those who attended the Fanfest at Harpa.

I was working in Harpa this weekend like so many other weekends and was so tremendously pleased with the guests that I feel compelled to spread the happiness. There were around 2000 guests there who all have something to do with the computer game, EVE Online. My job this weekend was to work the bar and generally service this group of so called "computer nerds". I've done all kinds of events at Harpa, from small events with 30 people, conventions, large concerts up to 1000 man annual company fests. I've gotten very used to service Icelanders at these events and I believe I know exactly which groups are the easiest to work with, which are the rudest, the pushiest, the most fun, the funniest etc.

"It was great to work on, and be a part of, this impressive fest that CCP hosts. I have never (except at Fanfest 2012) had such a wonderful group of customers before. They stood in queues and nobody tried to push past anyone else to get service first. They said "thanks" and asked courteously for everything they needed. The traffic for food came in bursts so when things slowed down I left the service station to clean up and make the area nice again for the next burst. To my surprise there was nothing to clean up, the guests cleaned up after themselves, threw the wrappers in the garbage when they were done etc. The only thing for me to do was wipe a few crumbs off the tables.

"On the Saturday night we had the final party and probably had between 2-3000 people in the building. Even if people were drinking, things went pretty much the same regarding the neatness and courtesy. I sold a crazy amount of beer that night so I expected to have to do a lot of cleaning up, many times over the course of the evening, but that wasn't the case. The guests even returned empty cans when they bought new ones."

---

I also spoke with some of the bouncers at one of the bars filled to the brims with Fanfest guests the whole week. They came to me specifically to tell me that they were so happy with the clientele. They're not used to having the bar full of drunk people without things breaking, fights breaking out and some amount of troublemaking at least. They already looked forward to having you guys back next year.

I'm proud of my tribe and wanted to thank you guys for giving Fanfest a great reputation! :)

What's that? EVE players, many of whom are complete bastards to each other in game and on forums can actually get along well in real life, even amongst their worst enemies? It's almost as if they're just people who enjoy playing this game enough to go on a weekend long alcohol binge with other people who have that in common.

In other words, incidents where somebody leaves Harpa and realizes they're missing their tablet, or where somebody decides to vandalize the monument to CCP's checking account, are exceptions and not the norm

I have removed some rule breaking posts and those quoting them. As always I let some edge cases stay.
Please people, keep it on topic and above all civil!

The Rules:

11. Discussion of forum moderation is prohibited.

The discussion of EVE Online forum moderation actions generally leads to flaming, trolling and baiting of our ISD CCL moderators. As such, this type of discussion is strictly prohibited under the forum rules. If you have questions regarding the actions of a moderator, please file a petition under the Community & Forums Category.

28. Please use the correct language when posting on the forums.

The default language for posting on the EVE Online forums is English. Please use English when posting as a courtesy to other forum users, unless the forum channel is specifically created for discussion in another language as part of our localized language specific sub-forums.

30. Abuse of CCP employees and ISD volunteers is prohibited.

CCP operate a zero tolerance policy on abuse of CCP employees and ISD volunteers. This includes but is not limited to personal attacks, trolling, “outing” of CCP employee or ISD volunteer player identities, and the use of any former player identities when referring to the aforementioned parties.
Our forums are designed to be a place where players and developers can exchange ideas in a polite and friendly manner for the betterment of EVE Online. Players who attack or abuse employees of CCP, or ISD volunteers, will be permanently banned from the EVE Online forums across all their accounts with no recourse, and may also be subject to action against their game accounts.

So, there's a couple of things going to happen in this thread right now:

  • First - People are going to stop pointing fingers and blaming people. CCP will investigate and take any action against game accounts, along with any legal action that we feel necessary. This is already in progress.
  • Second - This is damage of public property in the City of Reykjavik. The police have been informed, and investigation is ongoing. This is not a laughing matter, and will be dealt with as a criminal offence. We are currently reviewing security footage from a number of surrounding buildings.
  • Third - People will stop attacking the victim of this on our forums. It's not funny, it's not clever. Take your rumor mongering and personal attacks away from our community. If you choose not to, you'll be removed from the community, permanently. It's a simple as that. We will not tolerate victimization.

What's happened is absolutely disgusting. It's an insult to the entire community and is clearly the work a person who believes that behavior in a virtual world is a valid reason to make a real life personal attack on someone, and deface public property.

We will not tolerate this.

Thankfully we've already had a number of players come forward to assist us and provide information. Including, we believe, members of the person's own alliance.

Thankfully the vast majority of the rest of the community are in the same frame of mind as CCP - disgusted at the fact that someone would do this, and we're extremely grateful for your assistance.

With that in mind, I'll make a simple one time offer, that if the person who defaced the monument wants to come forward and contact me relating to this, then they can do so by EVE mailing my Dev character. If this happens, we'll take it as a gesture of good faith after an extremely stupid act that was committed.

With this in mind, be sure to keep this thread on topic, and cut out the personal attacks and finger pointing. People who break the rules will lose their forum posting privileges. Permanently.

Thanks.

Thanks for the update. Hopefully everything gets sorted and EVE can continue to grow and develop a strong community.
My main has no ties with either of the parties involved and CCP I am sure already can see I have been posting from the states So no I am not trying to frame anyone. They know who my main is already.

But this whole thing that happened is one of the reasons I choose not to post on my main character.
i did not wish to have my character name vandalized.
However i am glad I made this post and to see how many people are supporting what ever actions CCP chooses to take.

CCP is making the right moves and it is good to see them taking such a strong stance on this matter and on victimizing.

The goon sticker was removed the same day without any harm done from what i have read.
There is a thin line between a prank and vandalism both may be wrong only one cause real damage.

Or did you mean everyone in a more general sense, apart from all those who said no such thing?

Well, there are these complete nutcases who can't stop screaming about sociopathy one minute, only to turn around and issue death threats the next, but aside from that maladjusted minority, most are just your average bunch of joyful nerds who (in secret) rather enjoy being part of the EVE community.

It seemed pretty straight-forward. If you look through the thread, you will quickly pick up on the undercurrent of “of course someone would do this since EVE attracts nasty ebil players” or opinions to that effect. Andski is pointing out that the reality of the situation is quite different.

Let's break it down for you

Some people in this thread have been saying that these incidents are the result of CCP's permissive attitude towards "sociopathic behavior" in their game.

I assume that "sociopathic behavior" refers to suicide ganking and scamming.

Those people are wrong because the waitstaff, bartenders, bouncers, maitres d' and others who have hosted EVE fans in their bars, restaurants and hotels tend to only ever have good things to say about the Fanfest attendees who patronize their businesses. They're wrong because these incidents aren't the norm at Fanfest.

That isn't to say that these people would complain to CCP about Fanfest attendees doing bad things in their restaurants, but the people of Reykjavik are quite closely-knit and word of EVE fans tearing **** up in bars and restaurants or checking out of hotels with their rooms torn to shreds and their credit cards cancelled would get around quickly.

One of the great things about Eve is that, by and large, the community is civil and friendly once we take a step away from the game. Being a ruthless jerk is part of the game but once we're just talking person to person we're all buddies. Taking this sort of attitude out of the game and bringing it into RL (to vandalize what I view as a very meaningful representation of the greatness of the community) is just low. I don't know whether to be mad or sad about whoever is responsible. CCP is responding in exactly the way they should.
