Unfortunately for me though, what I've read in the media is enough to make me pause on buying the Oculus when it's released.

I'm not going to write it off and assume that the sky will fall in because the company is owned by Facebook, but I think I'll wait and see for a while.

They've recently admitted (after being caught) that they sell both personal identity and account information.

The only reason I even have mine anymore is because my wife's relatives would get butthurt if I deleted it, thinking it a slight.

You should remind your wife that right now Facebook sells female profile pics to adult dating sites, you know the sites that tell you that there's currently 20 women desperate for sex in your area whilst showing the fb pics. click here to join up.

That one could have been a PM, if you ask me. But my sister in law has far more to worry about than my wife, who is quite demure.

Nonetheless, thanks.

It is a pity. Facebook is awful as it is already. Although if someone offered me 2b, I'd sell... well pretty much anything. :)

Must FB own everything? Association to advertising revenue is parasitic to this type of development, and FB made its' bed a long time ago when it went down the route of dishing out user's data to 'personalise' advertising (and they weren't the first). It will never shake that image. And now, by association, Oculus has become toxic.

As the Occulus Rift presently operates what personal information is Facebook actually going to harvest? How long you play game X then take it off because it is giving you a headache? Sure if you surf the web on it then facebook might try to data mine but pretty much everyone is already doing that.

As everyone is starting to talk about VR as the future (again) could it be that Zuckerberg is just buying up a hot company to get the tech to try and push the underlying tech.

So are people overreacting a little?

Remember when Facebook bought Instagram.....

They changed the terms&agreement to state that Facebook OWN all your pictures and have the right to SELL them and use them for advertising or anything they want.

Only after a huge backlash from the users did they offer the BS excuse that it was an accidental change that didnt really mean what it said.

I was so excited about Occulus, but now... I'm really not so sure.

Yes I realise there is a risk but until we see any changes in Occulus Rift either in terms of the product or services around it then perhaps we are overreacting a bit

Why risk it at all, when a competing product has no such risks associated with it?

Sure its bad that a kickstarter firm is selling out but I'm pretty sure kickstarter only really applied to the actual product not the company.

The whole point of being on kickstarter is that you don't have to bow to the wishes of greedy venture capitalists, getting popular, building a nice project then selling it to fb when the project is already being funded is a betrayal of the entire kickstarter community and anathema to its values.

I hope that the rift dies on its arse, and as for the guy running occulus, I hope no one ever trusts him again. He is a betrayer of not just his crowd funder backers, but a betrayer of his own values. Nothing good will come from his decision.

But there was no need to sell, it was a crowd funded project, that could easily have been worth tens of billions of dollars in a few years of deployment.

I'd hang on to it for that payout, what do you need Zuckerberg's money for?

Won't be long before the stock market starts demanding it's cut, the parasites will start feeding and the joy of owning a rift will soon dissappear.

Maybe they knew that they could never bring it to the market with just $2.5M and were heading into the gutter? No matter how many high-profile people you have talking about your product (Carmack, Notch), it takes money to bring it to the market.

About this exclusive deal on Valkyrie and Rift... how about changing it from exclusive on PC and not on PS4 to not exclusive at all?

They want to turn it into some kind of STEAM or ORIGIN.

SO to use the Rift you will have to first log into some website or something that allows you to either game, or communicate with other people (Skype) or watch media.

This website (or whatever it is) can then offer you things to buy, and also push advertising on you. It will also recodd everything you do, and build databases of the things you like to play/watch/buy so it can then refine its advertising and also sell that information to other advertisers.

NOTE: this is what I think will happen.

I don't blame them.

Lady Areola Fappington:  Solo PVP isn't dead!  You just need to make sure you have your booster, remote rep, cyno, and emergency Falcon alts logged in and ready before you do any solo PVPing.

I refuse to have a FB profile or use any service that requires the use of FB in any way.

So no Oculus Rift for me.

Damn.

I'm not Lawyer, but isn't this kind rip off ? he invested the 2 mill funding and sold them out for 2 B. Can't these people ask for % from this.

Also this kind move I'm sure giving kick starter program a kick in the teeth, no one is going to support ideas and games blindly like before.
