CCP, why did you break cloaking?

Hey CCP, if you are listening, I just wanted to say so far so good. I'm really happy with the little things you have improved, especially the new warp tunnel. I have one issue so far though...

It now appears that if two ships are cloaked in space and they collide, they will not decloak eachother and infact pass right through each other.. I've only managed to test this and found it to be true with corp member but does it also apply to enemy/neutral ships?

If it only applies to fleet/corp members, great job! But if it applies to all ships, you have just removed an important pvp stratergy for me. Cry

make sure to read all the patch notes

Modules

* Mining lasers, tractor beams, salvagers and gas harvesters will keep playing their sound effects after the first cycle.
* Launching a warp disrupt probe will give you aggression and prevent you from docking or jumping.
* Covert Jump Portal Generators now consume 100gj of capacitor on activation in line with the activation cost in attributes.
* Cloaked ships will no longer decloak other cloaked ships.

A wee bit of EVE history. This was how cloaking was supposed to work, and it did work this way all the time until CCP launched Quantum Rise winter 2008 (the famous speed nerf patch, after which it was no longer possible to go at ludicruos speed). Now, they somehow broke cloaking in the expansion, promised to fix it, but never got around to do it. That is, until now.

I didn't know it was like this in the old days but I think it's stupid. How could you explain enemy ships not decloaking you story wise?

Cloaking fields obviously phase your ship out of realspace to a degree into one of the infinite realms of quantum energy and whilst an uncloaked ship (anchored fully in the universe of the real) creates a microgravitational field that causes close proximity cloaking fields (under 2500 meters) to collapse - multiple cloaked vessels don't do this because each is wrapped in its own divergent quantum phase singluarity only tangentally connected to the real. (which is also why cloaked ships can't fire weapons Star Trek style.)

Simple really.

have some supporting flavor text to support the above theory.

Quote:

Covert Ops Cloaking Device II
A very specialized piece of technology the covert ops cloak is designed for use in tandem with the covert ops frigate. Although it could theoreticaly work on other ships its spatial distortion field is so unstable that trying to compensate for its fluctuations would overwhelm even the largest standard ship computers.

Granted they then follow it up with a note about two cloaking devices fit to one ship interfering with each others light distortion which makes no sense in context with the description, but i would say the foundation for the idea is there already. a better note on why not to fit two cloaking devices should be the resulting distortions would just rip your ship apart.

heh if you really want a challenge try asking somebody why beams of coherent light completely dissipate at the magical 250kilometer mark and change from awsome weapons of war to irrelevant shimmers that can no longer heat up a frozen dinner.

Rek! How goes mon?

Yeah... it's an interesting change for sure... not sure how it can be sold "lore-wise"... it's interesting that a cloaked ship can pass through another cloaked ship, but you can see they're there in local.

what was it again? to fly cloaked through a system and hope to bump the afk cloaker?

how to fix eve: 1) remove ECM 2) rename dampeners to ECM 3) add new anti-drone ewar for caldari 4) give offgrid boosters ongrid combat value

Lots of things have changed but that doesn't mean there has to be a reason WE WOULD KNOW. Behind the scenes stuff perhaps.

Hell, you realize stealth bombers weren't even allowed to fit covert ops cloaks quite awhile back? They could only use the standard and got the same sort of speed boost when cloaked that the Widow gets now. IE: They could not warp cloaked.

They also used cruise missiles as opposed to torps and had a bonus to hitting smaller ships.

Oh and the manticore had one more launcher than the other races bombers... That part I want back. ;)

Just as much sense as undocking, aligning for warp and accelerating straight through the station, in fact.

Yeah this is my main issue. Prepatch if I watched a ship cloak after entering a WH I would approach his location and attempt to decloak him. Now I have to decloak, revealing my location.
