Call signs

Since names are fixed in stone once they are created, how about giving pilots call signs that can be changed? You can even have the same call sign as another pilot since it's just a nickname.

Or you could do what people do in RL and just use nicknames. That way no dev time need be wasted on it. It also means that, just like in RL, people can simply ignore your demand for a name change if they want to. If people respect you they might well use your new "callsign" name. If not, they probably won't. Just like real life.

no, it wouldnt, it would make them worse

we have people who want the ability to just plain remove skills because they dont like the look of mining lasers I in their skillsheet. if we implement changeable "nicknames", then the same people who ask for complete renames will use it as evidence for why they should get a complete rename whenever they want because "obviously its nott hat bad if CCP lets us change nicknames".

so no, no giving an inch, because whiney carebears will take a mile, and then throw a whiney fit when we tell them to shove off.

The title system would allow you to have a callsign, your title could be "Goose."

Or you could name all your ships "Call me 'Goose'"

I still don't think it's necessary though. Not that I think it's a waste of dev time or anything, I just don't think enough people would use it for anything more than giving themselves racial slurs and cuss words as nicknames to make it a valuable addition to the game.

thing is, if its a name you want to go by, then obviously its a name that you want more prominent than your normal name, which would make it your character identifier, if its anything less than its useless and would be better served by just asking people to call you X, Y, or Z. and if it is prominent enough to warrant existing at all, then switching that name to something else opens the door for anyone who picks your old character nickname to accidentally be in EULA violation.

Nicknames shouldn't be unique. Think of it as clothes for your name. Useless? Just as the ones your avatar use.

I've just had a play around with titles in the corp management window and that does seem to be precisely what you're asking for just with the label "Title" instead of "Callsign".

So considering the term callsign can fit within the bounds of a title but a title isn't necessarily a callsign it seems prudent to retain the label of "Title" in order to accomodate as many playstyles as possible.

Therefore, what you want is already in the game. If anything needs to change it's to be allowed to alter the label "Title" to other things, "Callsign" included.

Mind you, I still think it's an unnecessary change. Title seems perfectly fine to me.

There are already several work arounds for this idea, up to and including nicknames and titles.

I kinda would like to have Aliases though, as long as they could be tracked across a toon in a 'Previous Identities' fashion.

I realize this is a whole new realm of Spy warfare(Huge fan of the Spy game in Eve), but also as someone who made his char name before having any concept of what MMO's really were or PVP's and was only planning on being an obedient little high sec carebear, being able to change that name would be kinda nice :)

Having a module that I could fit to my hauler which, when activated, makes everyone in 100km radius of me turn into flying pink space elephants would be kinda nice too. Nice doesn't mean sensible though.

There is a great deal of resistance from a lot of the players and CCP themselves to name changing of any sort. If you do some research on past threads on the subject you'll see that it has never gained any traction because it has way too much opposition and it's a can of worms which CCP don't want to open .

The idea isn't about changing names, it's about giving a character another way to identify it. This is not the same as a Title. Titles are names given by another person for specific reasons. Much like nicknames in RL. A callsign is something you add to your name to tell something about your character to other persons. Like: Jta Grl (Rock Basher). But then I quit mining and just remove this callsign because it doesn't make sense anymore.

sounds exactly like a title

my old titles on another char were:

target practice; the spai; praises the black man; sir lancelot; the bait; and others i cant remember

other titles ive seen have seen (-not been lol)

da ju; ginger knight; secret squirrel; carebear caretaker; da chef; and others

all of these are like call signs, all of these are like nick names
