I have a problem...I have a fully outfitted Tech I Venture that is totally stocked up with Tech I goodies. I'm rocking

Small Anti-Thermal Screen Reinforcer I
Small Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer I
Small Core Defense Field Extender I

Mining Laser Upgrade I
Hobgoblin II x2

1MN Afterburner I
Survey Scanner I
Medium Shield Extender I

Miner I
Small Tractor Beam I
Miner I
-

I'm using the 5000m3 of ore bay it has plus the 50.00 amount of cargo hold and my mining lasers are running 111m3 per 60s, right?

OK! I went and bought a Miasmos (46,000m3 ore bay!) and fitted it with tons of goodies like:

Medium Low Friction Nozzle Joints I
Medium Polycarbon Engine Housing I
Medium Core Defense Field Extender I

Damage Control I
Warp Core Stabilizer I
Warp Core Stabilizer I
Nanofiber Internal Structure I

Medium Shield Extender I
EM Ward Amplifier I
Thermic Dissipation Amplifier I
Adaptive Invulnerability Field I

Small Tractor Beam I (another miner I laser wouldn't go on it)
Miner I
-

Right? But lo and behold...'ol Miasmos only does 46m3 of ore every 60s so I went from 222m3 per 60s to 46m3

I spent 8 million isk and spent all day jumping through stargates collecting this setup and I am only roughly 1/4th as efficient. What did I do wrong? Why have I lost 176m3 per 60s?

Hi, welcome to eve.

The Miasmos isn't a mining ship, it's an industrial vessel for transporting ore in medium quantities.

To progress in your mining career, work on getting into a mining barge. Use the ISIS ship viewer under ORE ships for a guide here.

A retriever is a good choice for solo mining, and should only take a week or so of training.

Good Luck

Well, it's useful to transport ore, so you could:
- transport ore from the system you mine in to a system where you can sell it for a good price
- transport ore from the system you mine in to a station where you have 6.67 standing in order to refine it there
- jetcan mine (i.e. someone mines in a Covetor/Hulk, which has great yield, but a small hold and just puts the ore into a jetcan, the Miasmos collects the jetcan and moves it to the station) but that's more something to do in a fleet, not solo, unless you mine in missions.

Note: when moving around ore, make sure that you have enough tank to protect it. The value usually thrown around is to transport no more than 3k ISK in value per EHP (although some say 6k/EHP is still ok).

Don't get locked into thinking you have to keep anything. Sometimes it's better to let your ISK stay liquid (which means you would sell the ship), sometimes its better to hold on to the assets (transporting stuff is a key part of the game). If you're always scrounging for ISK, stay liquid for now.

Yeah, the Miasmos is great for transporting ore, not so much for drilling it. It's probably at its best when working as part of a mining team, either with jetcan miners (the tractor beam can come in handy there) or with an Orca command ship (either just shuttling back and forth between the miners and the local station, or switching between a mining ship - a Venture or a barge - and the Miasmos, storing the other ship in the Orca's hangar bay).

If you must mine, the Procurer is fairly safe for a newer player (it is cheap and hard to gank). But expect to be bored to tears and quit the game soon.

If you want ISK, it is much easier for a newer player to steal it than to use the tools available at low skillpoints to 'earn' it.

If you have the ability to use combat scanner probes, for instance, you can probe down people running missions in a cheap ship, destroy their Mobile Tractor Units, then steal any choice loot their tractor unit had. Most mission boats struggle to do any damage at all to a moving frigate, so you are fairly safe and you are not risking much.

Because of a simple fact. You failed to read that the ships intended purpose is.

The Miasmos is an Ore HAULER, not a mining ship.

No offense to OP.

But CCP added ISIS, which clearly outlines what ship does what, and what progresses after what....and still people make mistakes.

Hey no offense taken...you're totally right. I acknowledged n00b mistake on my part....lol might have to get my eyes checked to make sure I can read and pay closer attention.

I really appreciate everyone's help though....I mined for days to garner up the 8 million isk and just spent it all on the Miasmos lol

Oh yeah and

I sit on my laptop at work all day and run EVE lol I am never bored to tears with mining because I am at work doing it so I can set it to mine and do paperwork and what not. I have external speakers set up so I can hear what the game is doing and what not...so Procurer you say? I'll check into that. I just need an ore bay bigger than 5,000m3.

Would have been more food for laughs if you came here with same question but then added Rorqual instead of MiasmosTwisted

Keep it. The Miasmos is a great indy for hauling ore. You will find a use for it. You can setup GSCs and mine into those then use the miasmos to pick up the ore. In the mean time, train up your skills so you can fly a Procuror or Retriever.

This thread is giving me flashbacks of falling asleep at the keyboard waiting for my mining Badger's hold to fill up.

Those are not the fondest memories I have of this game. Thanks, OP. Thanks a lot for forcing me to relive them.

Wait, isn't OP the Dust guy that came over for FW? Or am I confused?

Faction War to AFK mining is quite a fall to take :)

A few barge losses should solve that problem. Though FW and mining can be similar - orbit some object for 15 minutes, collect bacon unless you got ganked...

There are, indeed, very few things more boring than plexing.

If you're going for a barge, go for the Procurer unless you're willing to swallow the occasional ship loss, it's cheaper, it mines almost as fast as a retriever, but has a smaller cargo hold which fills in about 15 minutes.

The upside is that it can be fitted with a tank that rivals that of battle cruisers while still mining well; gankers will tend to leave you alone unless you do something stupid, or they're drunk and have ships that absolutely must die in a fire because they just do.

A Procurer or the Skiff (BS size tank I believe) are undesirable targets, especially when everyone else is flying Retrievers, Mackinaws and or an Orca is present, their resources are much better utilised on far easier or juicier targets.

You will probably bump into the New Order or similar organisation if you mine in highsec, they'll want a xx million isk fee for an annual/monthly etc mining permit, usually after making some poor sod in a Retriever explode Pirate.
Yes it's an extortion racket, yes it's explicitly allowed, and yes you might explode anyway Twisted

It's your choice how as how you deal with them. Either way I'd recommend a well tanked Procurer and some friendly banter in local. Sit back relax and enjoy all of the other miners tears or outrage, as you refine and sell the ores that you got to mine while everyone else exploded.

Loot any blue wrecks and sell modules that dropped back to the gankers if you want to profit from the action.

If you enjoy mining go for it, it can be fun if with friends, for winding down etc. When you get bored of it try something else. Industry is a natural progression, as is trading.

You can use always use one of the three character slots to start a dedicated industry or trade biased character and dabble a bit, you have 3 initially, most people have a main and specialised alts on the same account.

Downside : It involves either using a PLEX for the dual training malarky, or stopping the training on one character to start it on another.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

I have my clone insured and my ships insured lol they can want all they want and make a poopie in the other and see which one fills up first ;)

My mining started out like this:

1. Bantam -> fill up, put in large container, get container stolen, lesson 1 learned

2. Upgraded to a badger after having recovered from container losses -> afk fill while watching TV -> get badger mk2

3. Bought an Osprey, felt on top of the world with THREE bonussed mininglasers

So that hauler is a decent way to build a bit of cash for your first barge imho.

I'm sure there's "better" ways, but play EVE for about a week and you'll realize there's always a better way out there and it only matters when you aren't enjoying what you're doing right now.

My mining career ended yesterday when I thought I'd undock my Orca for the first time in 3 years and grab some veldspar. It's gone now, along with my belief I don't suck at EVE. Pro-tip: Don't shoot wrecks you didnt make in H-sec.
