What to do in a Corporation?

Yeah ok fair enough sorry for being so harsh :)

I'm worried that this "corps are scary and have no benefits" propaganda might spread to other new players. Corps are not scary and the risks are easily dealt with in a good corp, that is a fact.

Done repeating myself anyway, fly safe 0/

All of Marcus's posts were approached as a new player offering up his opinions for criticism and admitting that they were based in expectation and not experience. Some of the replies were rather hostile. Being "blunt" is no excuse for misconstruing the poster's intent. Logically considering many possibilities in a situation is a great trait for EVE players to have and many of the points brought up in this thread are valid concerns for new players. So please try not to run off our better recruits who display the ability to think for themselves.

While I feel my posts were not offensive, I can understand why Marcus might feel stepped on. His opinion may have been belittled as the bittervets addressed the ignorances and misinformation within. We'll acknowledge his opinion of "those benefits are worth the risks for me" is perfectly valid, and he can play in whatever manner that suits him.

On another note, I hope yall grow some callouses soon, as EvE isn't known for being the ideal place for thin-skinned players. This is a game were losses happen, and the sooner you grow comfortable with that, the more the game mechanics make sense.

I didn't find your posts offensive at all. I've been wrestling with this important decision for a while now so its good to finally get some solid feedback on it, particularly from a range of forum vets with different opinions who have helped me both online and in other threads and whose opinion I greatly respect.

I only thought 1 poster crossed over into outright trolling and that's not bad for an EVE forum! Smile

I found that you, Cara Forelli, Hedonism Bot and Oracc Ensor gave the best and most useful advice. Thanks for taking the time to respond. :)

I agree.

Every single person has the right on their own opinion, this includes people who just started as much as the 10 year old vets of the game.

Why I responded to his points of not joining a corp, because they were all based on 1 single event, trying to join EVE-Uni and included a lot of points that are not at all / only marginally there for many other corps in EVE. That's the nice thing about EVE corporations, there IS always a corp that fits you, the finding it can take days/weeks/months/years. Just because Corp "X" didn't work out, doesn't mean all other corps won't work out for you. Every corp in EVE will have downsides to it too, it will never be a perfect fit.

In my corp history, I can tell you, there was one corp that really fitted me, but it kind of died out because most members stopped playing EVE for a while and thus we drifted apart. I think if that didn't happen, I would still be part of them. The others all looked all nice and shiny with greener pastures then the previous one, but turned out to be different from what they claimed / what I expected.

You are just about the first person i'v ever heard accuse J'Poll of trolling, and it shows your lack of experience. If you're going to become filthy rich i will seriously consider suicide ganking you into oblivion to rub in the value of being in a corp full of people you can turn to.

Really? That's surprising because I was warned about him by several people weeks ago but I saw how he liked to help newbies and argued in his favor. Turns out I was wrong though and they were all 100% right.

lol, He's even accused of being a troll in his *own* interview....... So much for me being the "first person ever".....

http://jamessteerforth.wordpress.com/2014/01/02/an-interview-with-an-eve-online-forum-veteran/

I think in his own way he is trying to help, certainly there is some actual information there buried among the taunts and jibes, but his tone and the way he goes about it totally comes across as trolling, I have become a believer.

As for the ganking. What can I say dude, knock yourself out but bring a supply of ships because I tend to over tank. :)

And you know what I think about people claiming I'm a troll:

They just don't like advice and expect it all to be served dressed up nice with fluffy dice on a silver platter.

Heads up, I don't work like that. If I think people are acting like a ******, I will just say it to them (both on the internet as well as in real life. It's why some people like me and some hate me).

Just to conclude on the corp members can shoot each other in High sec aspect.

This is not so much a response to any feedback in this tread, which I unfortunately find largely irrelevant, as it is a general recommendation to anyone who is still undecided or who thinks that the mechanic may be of questionable value.

Over the past few days I have come across several prominent sources in the community that have a little more than the "I gots the EvE thousand yard stare" mantra to contribute with. While I haven't seen them specifically discuss this mechanic, they are however discussing the fact that EvE has struggled with it's influx of new players for years now, and that CCP's lack of focus with regards to High Sec, partly is a likely explanation.

As much as EvE is a pretty hardcore game, it still needs a steady supply of new blood, and one way of maximizing a potential that is clearly there, would be to streamline the reality that most new players face when they start out, without compromising it's confrontational core in any major way.

Fortunately, all is not lost in this respect. From what I understand, EvE still has it's Council of Stellar Management, and should a candidate appear that take an interest in this area of the game, one can always vote on said person to bring it closer to the attention of the developer.

From my viewpoint there is little that points to High Sec law enforcement also including corp members that would affect the game "negatively" other than eliminating the current awox routine, a routine I think many will agree seems cheap and inconsistent with how the setting works in general. That EvE is served by strengthening the High Sec populations ability to form social structures I think most anyone would agree is a good thing, save perhaps some of the most rabid among us.

Therefore I encourage players who think the same way to not be discouraged by all the aggressive lowbrow noise you unfortunately are bound to find in most EvE discussions, and keep this question in mind when browsing for candidates for the next Council or just debating EvE in general.

Thanks for reading.

Quoting the usual "EVE IS DYING" reply.

Too bad that yearly increase in subscription numbers doesn't agree with your post.

p.s. CSM has high-sec reps on it atm, which are doing Spaceship Politics stuff in Iceland as we post here.

I have no idea how many times i have seen this, and every time i have to wonder why people are so convinced that EVE is struggling getting and maintaining new players.
I have never seen any proof that EVE is getting less players, however, i have seen plenty of proof that the amount of EVE players is going up over the past years.

Examples;
EVE Online has shown linear, positive subscription growth for over 9 straight years.

EVE Online® had surpassed the 500,000 subscriber mark worldwide for the first time in the game’s history. The milestone continues ten consecutive years of subscriber growth

Im sure others have more graphs and numbers, but im lazy Lol

However, i dont fully understand what this has to do with the subject at all, unless you are trying to say that you think corp members being able to shoot each other is somehow hindering the games growth.

But to address something else in your post, how would removing this affect the game in a negative way.
1) Awoxing would be gone as you mentioned, and while many dont like this profession it fits in with the "harsh universe" and it adds a certain level of risk to recruitment, like every aspect of EVE.

2)Now say you have some guy join your corp and while he cant blow you up, he bumps people and harasses your members, and of course you cant kick him because he is in space. Well you cant blow him up, so better just stop everything until he docks up or he goes offline and then kick him Lol

3)In game tournaments and events. Sure you could find ways to get everyone flagged, or set up several duals, but honestly, its pretty easy to say "hey lets meet in this system and have a free for all fight! Last man standing wins!".

4)Reverse Safari would also be gone, which would take away the risk new recruits run into.

Thats what i can think about right now, so..in my opinion removing this feature would be a bad idea, and the fact that the feature is there most likely has a lot less impact on total subscription numbers then you would think Lol

In Internet slang, a troll (/ˈtroʊl/, /ˈtrɒl/) is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people,[1] by posting inflammatory,[2] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a forum, chat room, or blog), either accidentally[3][4] or with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[5] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.[6]

Application of the term troll is subjective. Some readers may characterize a post as trolling, while others may regard the same post as a legitimate contribution to the discussion, even if controversial. Like any pejorative term, it can be used as an ad hominem attack, suggesting a negative motivation.

It would require effort and it looks like work. I'm allergic to both of them.
