Do the planets orbit?

Just noted after checking a planet info that the orbit time was listed. Is this just there for RP or what is the info there for?

They do not orbit in the game. Too much work to program, no real reason to anyway.

That would be pretty cool! However, my guess is that the planets actually have static positions in space.

Yes, and no.

EVE planets are in EVE, EVE is in servers, servers are on surface of Earth, Earth rotates, Earth orbits Sun, Sun orbits Milkway Galaxy, ..., it's orbits all the way down until you hit turtles.

No. It would be very cool if they DID orbit, but that would add a lot of complexity to each system, and I can see how it would add quite a bit of load for every capsuleer logged into each system.

Eve is a static universe, which is too bad because a dynamic one would be so much more fun.

It would also provide an advantage to the older players who would have the opportunity to create zillions of safespots along the planet's orbit over the years.

On the plus side, it would give people a reason to create spreadsheets/3rd party apps calculating when one of those safespot bookmarks is now at the center of a planet.

The orbit time, star age etc. is meaningless RP fluff. You can't even collide with the planets and stars, they are empty inside and you can fly through them. Everything in EVE except player content is more or less static.

For a non-static procedurally generated universe, where planets do orbit, space is not liquid and ships have crew, please check Elite II: Frontier, released in 1993.

Unfortunately, you can't scam for PLEX there.

Would be nice in a lot of systems to spread safes

Pretty sure I've read in a blog/post from CCP before that the space objects originally did orbit in the physics engine code, but this was later disabled or removed for lack of any real gameplay function.

You would not be the first to challenge/suggest a change to that staus quo - give them a good reason and just maybe. Blink

Of course planets orbit

There rotation is based on how fast you spin your ship in space.

Quoting "you will die" in EvE is fail Chars dont die in EvE. Unless you have a heart attack eek.

No, they do not. The original envisioning of Eve included orbiting planets, stars, and other objects, but there are mechanics problems along with computational problems of simulating simultaneous gravitational interaction between tens (hundreds?) of thousands of separate objects.

The planets, or at least their rings, *do* rotate though.

There is an asteroid belt inside the boundary of the planets rings in Jerma (IV belt 1 if I recall). If you sit in the belt for an hour or so, you'll see the rings go from being above the asteroid belt, to below it, and then eventually back. this is because the rings are not aligned flat with the axis they rotate on.

Yep. According to lore, systems with more than one star do not support jump gates. Or... something.
