Contract Scams - how'd they do this one?

You know, I take a lot of efforts to "protect" myself in this game. As a matter of fact, probably too much for what is suposed to be an entertainment medium.

I'm not raging about being scammed persay. I'm raging about the fact that as far as I could tell there was no counter, no way I could have protected myself (other than outright not using contracts to buy stuff which is the lesson learned here).

I decided I wanted a new ship so I looked on contracts (mistake #1). I found the ship I wanted, fitted and rigged. I double checked, triped checked the contents of the contract to make sure it clearly stated "hulk" "exhumer" , not hulk blue print, but exhumer.

And of course when I completed the contract there was the ******* blue print.

Now, I've been playing this game long enough to realize that its full of scammers and botters. But I have to say I do grow a little tired (really tired actually) of playing a game that **only** has me looking behind my back all the time. Paranoia online? You're likely to develop some form of mental complex finishing the day each day like this.

So how did they do this one? How do you package a blue print to make it look exactly like a ship and when the hell will it be fixed?

Its one thing to get scammed because you weren't paying attention but I'm growing really really tired of all the game mechanics that are there just to screw you over.

Eve is a game of rock paper scissors until it comes to player economy and on a separate side, suicde ganks.

Then its just a rock to the balls and have a nice day.

I guess I know there is always soemthing a player could have done differently, but its a bit depressing that the different thing to do is to simply avoid using CCP's contract system.

You may be surprised to hear this, but this sort of thinking will get you very far in business, second guessing and paranoia are the only way you are going to make sure the end product is flawless (or close to).

Also can I have your hulk BPC?

If it's at Jita and it's on contract, assume it's a scam. I won't buy a ship off contract, period. The marketplace should be the only place people go to buy these... to hell with the contract scammers.

No you didn't. When looking for a ship actually take the time to right click and show info on the item. If it is a bpc then the bpc window appears, if it is actually a ship the ship info appears; you failed at doing this and just looked at the name and that's what the contract scammer relies on. Many things in the game have the same or very similar names. There was very simple protection as in actually INSPECTING your goods prior to accepting, you didn't and there was no magic work behind the scenes to scam you, you scammed yourself thinking you knew what name to look for when clearly you didn't.

I buy alot of things on Contract... have not fell for a scam once. For the most part scams are pretty obvious, reading them is a perk, making sure is a bonus before you click on accept.

A surprising few contracts are scams... I don't buy things on contract that i can buy on market

Can you post a screenshot of the contract for us?

I wrote some true EVE stories! And no, they're not of the generic "my 0.0 alliance had lots of 0.0 fleets and took a lot of 0.0 space" sort. Check them out here:

I was scammed out of 750mil ISK-worth of ships by Goonwaffe a few months back. I didn't know that they weren't recruiting, but they led me to believe that after a security deposit (which sparked my suspicion) and contracting all ships I wanted to bring with me for transport (which was just about everything I had. A Proteus, a Hyperion, a Drake, two Wolves...). I was actually pretty excited, because I'd -heard- of Goonswarm before and thought it'd be great to join a big Alliance.

Three weeks after doing all of this, no response. I went from 220mil ISK to 70mil ISK to pay for a "security deposit." Concerned, I posted in their Help channel.

"Dude, you got scammed." I raged and quit the game for about three months before coming back just a few days ago. Even posted a rage-induced topic on the old EVE forums that was met with the condescending hostility I came to expect out of the EVE community.

What really frustrates me, though, is that just about everyone I've come across are greedy bastards who'd rather lead me on and then give me nothing when I want to try and get everything back.

I understand why, but seriously. It's really frustrating.

This must have been a private contract or done from an alt - not the char you are posting with.

In game:
Bring up someone's char info.
Upper left corner are the stacked bars. Click that.
Chose "Show Contracts"

That will show any/all finished public contracts a character (or corporation if corp info is checked) has done. Private contracts don't show.

This works for individuals and corporations. Example: You show no public contracts executed from nor to your character. Your corporation shows 3 contracts - last one done back in February for a 5 copy Covetor BPC...

You obviously weren't careful enough.

There is a tick box in the contracts search window that lets you search for 'Exact item type'. Mark that if you want to make sure you're only seeing Hulks, and not Hulk blueprints.

If a contract appears to have a ship and rigs in it, make sure the rigs are fitted. The contract info will tell you if they are. If they're not clearly stated as being fitted, be suspicious.

Finally, as others have suggested, show info on anything in the contract you want to check.

I often buy ships on contract, and have got some very good deals there. Never been scammed yet.

Check his CEO's contracts.

In that contract, it's listed as a "hulk blueprint - mining barge blueprint - BLUEPRINT COPY".

Also, the mods are not indented like fitted mods are in a contract.

Maybe if you try to earn your way into a group instead of buying your way in, you'll be seen as someone worth recruiting rather someone who's only worth scamming.

I've never been scammed* because I assume that if someone else is setting up a deal, they know what they're doing. Consequently when I see a rigged & fitted Hulk contract advertised in Jita for less than the local market price, I know that it's a scam even if I cant immediately see how it's a scam.

Occasionally I amuse and educate myself in Jita by decrypting the less obvious scams (it's a bit like doing a crossword). For instance, I wasn't aware that the T3 subsystem skillbooks are rather misleadingly labelled in contracts. But in even less time than I took to work that one out, you could have found out that goons have been recruit-scamming people for over half a decade. It's not like it's a secret.

*Or if I have, it was done so subtly that I'm not even aware of it.

well, while I can understand your position you have to also realize that getting scammed by GS is nothing new, in fact its well doccumneted.
EVEN THEIR OWN RECRUITMENT PAGE WARNS TO NEVER GIVE A RECRUITER YOUR MONEY OR STUFF

think of it as your entrance exam, you took the test and failed
now if you had said "**** off" and followed the rest of the instructions on the GS page you would probably be ganking ice miners now and not lone-wolfing the forums
