New Players FAQ: a tale of information sharing

So, yesterday I noticed how the Launcher talked about a New Players FAQ. It interested me enough to memo the fact, but didn't figured that finding it later could be... huh... EVE style.

Today, I wanted to read the New Players FAQ, and so I went to the Eve Online site:

http://www.eveonline.com/

The FAQ is not advertised, so I tried highlighting tabs, looking for it:

Tab 1: The world of EVE: not, it isn't here
Tab 2: The sandbox: no, it isn't here
Tab 3: Creations: no, it isn't here
Tab 4: Capsuleers: apparently it's empty?
Tab 5: Rubicon: no, it isn't here

Houm. It's not on the main page and it's not on the tab menus. Maybe is on the menus themselves?

EVE community - Forums: it shouldn't be here...

https://forums.eveonline.com/

But let's try:

EVE information portal: no, it isn't here

https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=topics&f=247

Jesus.

EVE New Citizens Q&A: no, it isn't here

https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=topics&f=257

OK, scratch the forums...

Back to eveonline.com, now enter the community site:

http://community.eveonline.com/

More tabs!

Tab 1: News: not, it isn't here
Tab 2: Community: no, it isn't here
Tab 3: Backstory: no, it isn't here
Tab 4: Support: shouldn't it be here?
Tab 5: Forums: Been there already...

Let's check the Support tab:

http://community.eveonline.com/support/knowledge-base/

Support -Knowledge base: yes, there it is! There's a banner to it!

Oh wait: it's a PDF?

http://web.ccpgamescdn.com/communityassets/pdf/EVE-Online-New-Pilot-FAQ.pdf

Well, well, all is well what ends well. I've had to surf only 3 websites (main, forums and community) and check 10 tabs and 2 forum folders, in order to find something that was explicitly advertised at the Launcher and it's supposed to be made specifically for new players.

I just wonder: what are the chances that a new player actually learns that it exists?

Is he supposed to know that he must go to the main site, then enter the community site and then look for the knowledge base and notice that it is a banner and not a link, all on his own?

I don't know. If it was me, I would advertise it on the main page, as soon as it loads on the browser. Hiding it behind 2 websites, 1 tab and 1 menu is not exactly going to make it accesible to someone who DOESN'T KNOWS THE WEBSITES NOR THE GAME.

Just IMHO.

I was under the impression people had been using this for ages;

No FAQ would be needed if there weren't assholes in starter corps ruining it for new players.

EVE is a complex game, if the new player can't find the hidden new player faq, how ever is he going to learn how to double his isk simply by going to jita and reading local?

This thread is about how difficult it is to find a CCP guide for new players in CCP's own websites.

And you receive points for knowing it's a book! I have run into countless people that think it's an original movie, and one guy, when I asked if he read it, actually replied with, "Why'd they turn that movie into a book? How can you see all the cool action if you have to read it?" Though that's better than when I was in high school and people didn't know Lord of the Rings was a book before it was a movie(or the far worse atrocity of arguing the movie is better).

Its not about making ISK...its everything you eve wanted to know about Eve.

Soon the ISK:vol 2 PvP manual will be in English, and there will be much rejoicing (yay.) .

While I agree that CCP is making it hard for New players to find the very guide that was made for them, the ISK guide is so much better in every way, my point is..why should new players look for an inferior guide anyways?

Assholes make the game interesting. Seriously. I used to be a high sec care-bear until the Goons decided to be assholes and do the Gallente ice interdiction. My mining fleet was ganked so often by assholes that I realized I needed to learn how to fight and defend myself. So those assholes actually encouraged me to expand my horizons and move to nullsec.

Now I enjoy the game much more, and I'm even a jerk myself once in a while. If you can't take it, Hello Kitty Online is over there--->

OP has a good point.

While CCP could and most likely will add it to all the locations mentioned the nice thing about the forums is we the players can do some of that work ourselves. Which I will do as soon as I finish typing this post.

Thread created in New Players Q & A forum.

You really misunderstood that. The assholes are the people who tell new players to go mine and run missions. To avoid lowsec at all cost. To play solo. To not actually engage anything remotely fun.

Well, whilst it would be cool if all newbies had the ability to endlessly throw frigates and dessies at people in lowsec, the reality is that most pvp guides also cover "how to fund your pvp habit", which can include mining and missioning, or perhaps asking people nicely if they will fund your habit for you Blink

I thought that in 2013 if people wanted to know something they'd already know how to use google.
