Nice idea!

Does anybody know if you can use OBS to stream to twitch and at the same time send it to a file?

Kind regards,

Do not know about at the same time. I know it can do both separately quite handily.

I think you can save part of your stream as videos on twitch. We haven't really thought of it, but I will take a look and see if its possible.

I've always wanted to do something like this, and I did plan on doing it in the past, but I never got around to it / didn't have the time

I'd like to up the prize pool by 30b, I will also offer a guarantee of 25b for your character

You can configure OBS to record to a .mp4 as well as stream. I am not sure about the quality loss though

That's fantastic Garmon. Thank you!

The judges panel, Mizhir and myself will have a serious discussion with ideas of how to reward and this amount.
Needless to say, every fight will get more! And prizes will changed.
Will keep this thread updated as we find out how this will happen as well.

When it rains it pours, good things :-)

I really look forward to the final video that results from this contest. And, damn, the person who wins this will be - somewhat-space rich, at least by my standards.

Looked up...saw this F***ING clown dropping like a rock.Β  Woke up in Vylade wondering what just happened!!!

Lovely idea! I will definitely try. Since I'm new to this, what's the recommended software for a low-end machine to record video?

Fraps or Bandicam. Bandicam will compress the file, so will be a great choice if HDD space is a problem. However I dont know if it stress your computer more.

Fraps or Bandicam. Bandicam will compress the file, so will be a great choice if HDD space is a problem. However I dont know if it stress your computer more.

Another relatively new option is Dxtory (which TotalBiscuit says is superior).

I'll just make a quick overview.

Fraps
http://www.fraps.com/
$37
You only get to use the one codec (at least when I last used it). You can pick a framerate, but that's it. Compression is very low, which means that it shouldn't be too taxing on your CPU, but files will be HUGE, as in several GB for a few minutes of recording at 1080p, which means a lot of disk IO as well. Strongly recommend you record to a different hard drive than the one you keep your game files on, since loading resources from the disk (loading times) will be significantly slowed down if your disk can't keep up.

Another thing about the Fraps codec is that the video looks incredibly dark compared to the actual gameplay IMO. I believe most people tend to brighten it up afterwards in an editor, but that would mean loss of quality.

EDIT: Should note that Fraps generally has really good quality, and that many people have trouble with performance using Fraps.

Bandicam
http://www.bandicam.com/
$39
You get to pick from a bunch of different codecs and quality settings, as well as use any 3rd party codec you'd like. Most of the standard codecs use significant compression, which means that files will be smaller without sacrificing quality at max settings. This also means that it will be more taxing on your CPU, but your hard drive will thank you.

I'd recommend using MJPEG at maybe 80-90q, for a good balance between quality and file size. There's also YV12 and RGB24 which are lossless, meaning quality should be perfect and won't tax your CPU much since very little compression, but we're talking file sizes that are much larger (about Fraps sizes). External codecs worth mentioning is x264, which will give you some really good quality at a very tiny file size, but will be extremely taxing on your CPU. There's also Lagarith, which is a good contender with MJPEG, sacrificing some file size for better quality.
http://www.bandicam.com/support/tips/best-codec/

I personally much prefer Bandicam to Fraps, but it takes a bit of research and trial and error to find the right settings.

Dxtory
About $36
http://exkode.com/dxtory-features-en.html
Haven't tried it yet, but as I said above, the mighty TB prefers it so it much be the best... right?

I think the main benefit with Dxtory is that you can record in 30fps while still viewing the game in fulll. Fraps and Bandicam will both lock your fps to whatever recording fps you have set.

Dxstory, like Bandicam also lets you customize your settings and use different codecs and even external ones.

Your best bet is to look around for comparisons, reviews, and try them for yourself and see which one works best for your setup, they all have limited free versions.

Anyone should feel free to point out any inaccuracies in my post.

Any thoughts on a decent free video capturing software ? I gave camstudio a try but if filled up my HDD very quickly and the output wasn't great. Guess that why its free, but it could just be me.

You can select local output instead of streaming in the options. It encodes on the fly though, so you will need to have a good CPU and play around with the settings a bit.

Edit: for local recording, try these settings: http://obsproject.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=2972
