That would be immersion to me.

Are you dooming a game based upon a partial pre-alpha build of single functional and "not impressive" module?

Dooming? No.

I am taking whatever Chris Roberts has said, promised to deliver, and anything in between, with a f*ckton of salt though.

You did see that video of the constellation right?, and the bengal class carrier is amazing visually and this is still alpha code and looking better than whatever CCP managed to release in incarna by quite a bit, which is just captains quarters where the only notable thing is changing one's aperance and that's it....

All the otther stuff that was promised to be eventually released is ancient history.....Ugh

better be sceptical and be proven wrong than hail just another slice of bread as the next coming of ninja pirate cyborg raptor zombie jesus.

no I'm not being a pessimist, the game has enough potential to become the usherer of a new age of sci-fi games.
nor I'm being an optimist either, since gaming history has proven time and time again that those who go chestbeating the loudest are the ones that fail most miserably.

all I'm saying is: be cautious, and don't delve too much on the hype to cloud your eyes.

ive never though of eve online as a space sim,

Its not even in the same genre of game a star citizen. except both are spaceships.

eve isnt a space simulator, its a

MMO RTS - Sandbox - Empire builder - Action adventure - Stealth - Survival horror - Tactical RPG - Construction and management simulation - Tower defense - Wargame - Puzzle - Maze - Adventure roleplaying - government simulation - Biological simulation - Turn-based strategy - Drama - Fantasy - science fiction - Western ....

Infact let me just stop there, and list what eve online is not,

A sports game.
A fighter game.
A side scrolling game.
A space simulator.

So in a nutshell, this topic is pointless,

now if you wish to divert and change topic to " Star Citizen VS EVE: Valkyrie" Which would actually be a valid comparison, as whilst both on different platforms are both targeting the space combat sim genre.

And to add more, id rather compare EVE to X-rebirth, because that's looking frigging amazing...

Let me ask you a question then; are you buying into Star Citizen merely because of shown trailers and because of said trailers, you already decided that whatever RSI puts out is so far ahead of CCP that it would be foolish not to be excited? Because that is what your post literally is saying.

actually I have to add this:

at this moment this game can be either the next Daikatana or the next Half-life.

It's a different game altogether for the simple difference that the ships pack so much detail on them, that having hundreds of them in a huge fight isn't just about server lag, but one's PC actually even hoping to render all that with anything even remotely resembling playable performance and not just a slide show, hence for that reason the fights with be instanced and in much smaller numbers and not just one where massive numbers will play a decisive factor in winning...

Second, the whole time slows down in EVE when a large fight is happening has never been something i like personally, and it removes the player even more from any sort of immersion that the game has to offer.

Third, at least for the available ships released so far, all of them will be able to land on planet surfaces comming thru the atmosphere, even a 140 meter long idris corvette will do it( which looks gorgeous btw), which is something we've been drooling about in EVE for years, and CCP showed a video of an amarr frigate flying on the surface of a planet in the early years of the game, but nothing came of it unfortunately.

Fourth:, the game has real neutonian physics, which allows maneuvers that eve does not, like flying in a specific direction, rotating the ship on it's axis in a different direction while killing the engines and never slowing down at all( we are in space afterall), and one might even fire the ships weapons while flying backwards.....All in first person view, while ship mates on the larger ships, man the turreted guns on ships like the constellation or idris corvette, and even deploy the p52 snub fighter on the constellation, and 2~3 fighters in the idris for it's defence.

The game was expected to earn 2 million to continue it's developement, and it's past the 17 miliion mark and on it's way to 18 million, at which point battlecruisers get released in the game, and there's 230k+ backers, making the highest publically funded game with nothing needed from publishers to water it down and make the game playable on every hardware out there....Blink

Not a reason to ignore possible competition as far as I am aware... Your quote is also applicable to CCP : P

Tal

CCP have been delivering quite a lot this last couple of years.

It's interesting to look at the list of requests the first 4-5 CSMs presented and see how many of them have actually been implemented, for instance.

I'd be the last to deny that CCP haven't always made the most efficient use of their development resources over the years - there has been a shocking amount of wasted effort, especially in the 2009-2011 era. But I can tell you that right now, unless every single ex-CSM I speak to is involved in a conspiracy to fool me, the CCP we have now has changed significantly from the CCP we had in, say, 2008. For the better.

By the time games that want to compete with EVE come out, they'll have a 12-13 year development deficit to catch up with. That's the equivalent of several hundred million dollars worth of dev time. And there's no gaurantee that Mr Roberts will be as good at managing a company as he undoubtedly is at creating a great game.

Personally I hope SC is a great game. Some direct competition would be good for EVE, and it's always helpful to have a new source to steal ideas from. And then there's the "halo effect"; if SC is a World Of Tanks style smash hit, then that will popularise the 'spaceships' genre, and EVE would benefit from that.

It's just that I've seen the hype -> reality -> bitterness cycle amongst these "EVE killer" games turn so many times before.

Maybe so, but we'l soon find out as the next major module to be released is the pvp one by december of this year, so we'll actually get to fly the ships and start to get a feel on how they fly, work on setups and overall balancing, even though it's not even a beta yet so the work is getting done now that they have all the money they need and then some.

it's still overhyped and we're not even close to a beta.

hell I don't want to be a spoilsport, but stop making this game the next big thing. we don't know it yet.

Actually i even forgot a few things such as having a fully developed single player campaign, so even if the server crashes for the online playing portion, users can still fall back on that, and you should remember way back in the early days how many times the eve server crashed and all we could do is ***** and moan on the old forums.

Add the abiity to create your own content as the Tools will be supplied for it if one has the time, talent and knowledge for such a hobby even run their own server with their own content and their own rules, so there's no real dependency on the official server at all.

Face it, on several fronts, the game is more Advanced than EVE which has been stale for quite a while.

Until the game goes gold, it can even say on the box that it can make coffee while standing upside down on the tip of an air plane wing, it's still on the realm of "what if". only when the game hits the shelves one can pass judgement on it.

Fair enough, i'll be playing the alpha modules as they get released and later on the beta's, as there's no way for the full game with all the features listed to be released before very late 2014 or even early 2015.

Either way, it's better for CCP to assume the worst case scenario and prepare the next 2~3 expansions with some really good content to reduce the odds that people leave the game for star Citizen.....Getting tired of minor stuff being changed over the last few expansions, but that's just me.

Star Citizen's largest appeal is that it is the kind of game why we old farts play EVE. We used to play games like SC and have been playing EVE because there was no game like SC. What?

Of course, threats to SC do exist. One of them is burning out the game before it as much as is released. Hyping is a double edged sword.

I mean: I sorted my account and downloaded the Hangar... still haven't run it b/c of a file location issue so i'll had to uninstall and install again. But once I run it, well, I already will have been there. Once the game is done, I will enter the hangar and will have been there, how many times?

To me, that kills the thrill of discovery. I'm not a visual person. Better prettier graphics mean nothing to me -the most relevant thing EVE has done for me in 5 years, visually speaking, it's the scalable UI. So once I "see" the Hangar, just seeing it better, prettier, will not really make a difference in my experience.

And the game it's not done already, so I fear SC may become old & comfy even before being released.

Of course, that's my personal stance, so probably I will not dwell much into the pre-alpha modules... to keep some novelty and freshness to when I'm ready to enter the SC universe and explore it for real.

My understanding is that it's the singleplayer Squadron 42 that will be released in late 2014. The full game with the persistent universe slated to be released and the game enters BETA in early 2015.

For me, it reminds me of another game i used to play.....Independence war 2 which was set in space and in first person view with neutonian physics, so a pilot felt like a pilot pulling all sorts off maneuvers in space.....I miss that and it's what Star Citizen is offering, but with the potential of using much bigger ships than independence war ever did and, looking far better, and even having a real crew onboard made up of people you know in real life.

Yep, CCP's monopoly on the sci-fi spaceship sim will end with several years. I look forward to seeing how CCP compete for those players who, like us, don't play for the hardcore "wake-up-at-2am-for-CTA" PVP but because of the sci-fi univers setting.
