Afterburner and MWD measurements.

Perhaps this has been brought up before, but I tried the search and didn't find anything so here we go;

Presumably the NM measurement stands for Newton Metres, which can either be a measurement of energy or torque, at a conversion of 1 Nm to 0.73 foot-pounds of torque.

Now lets compare this to something like a base model Ford Mustang, which has 280 ft-lbs of torque.
This means that the Mustang has about 380 Nm or 3.8 Battleship size MWD's.

If this is true, what is stopping my car from launching into outer space at the slight push of the accelerator?

Discuss.

It's "MN" bro.

This is as nice as I get. Best quote ever https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=4137165#post4137165

100 meganewtons, or approximately 8 times the thrust of a space shuttle solid rocket booster.

"1 Nm to 0.73 foot-pounds of torque"

how I hate the imperial system. I am from the USA and only use imperial in my day-to-day, but when it comes to math, metric is just so much easier.

1 newton is the force required to accelerate 1kg 1meter/s^2

Foot-pounds.. bleh... pound isn't even a unit of mass, slugs are. How did someone even come up with the idea of measuring the acceleration of mass and not use mass as part of the equation?

As someone already pointed out it's MN not NM, but going with your hypothesis the reasons that your Mustang won't launch into outer space are

  • At high elevations an infernal combustion engine loses power, due to a lack of oxygen for the combustion process..
  • Escape velocity, to leave Earth your Mustang needs to be capable of hitting 25,000 mph, approx 7 miles/s or 11.2 km/s. Time travel is easier, that only requires 88 mph and a flux capacitor.
  • It's a Ford, important bits will fall off of it at high speed, given that it's a Mustang they'll fall off sooner rather than later, they're not particularly well put together even by Fords standards.

Thandie Newton, best Newton, after Sir Issac of course.

Because pounds aren't being used as a unit of mass here, they're being used as a unit of force. Which is what they are.

Pounds are also sometimes used as a unit of mass with the caveat that we're referring to x pounds as "that amount of mass which causes a gravitational force of x pounds in Earth's gravity" with the gravitational field strength assumed to be approximately 32 ft/sec^2.

Turns out, reality doesn't care how tenuous your grasp on physics is, it just runs along and plays by its own rules. One of the applications of those rules is that a spaceship thruster's power is generally not measured in units of torque.
