I was just playing Mass Effect and I started thinking... how would a Reaper invasion go down in New Eden?

I was thinking that, but it's also relevant to gameplay, combat strategy, and a whole range of topics, so I figured I'd start in GD and if it gets moved, it gets moved.

Fair enough. I haven't played mass effect very much but going up against the immortals on new eden would be an up hill battle for anyone. Unless they attacked the stations.. damn it now you got me thinking

If they went after stations en masse, they could do some serious damage. Focus on cloning facilities first. Alternatively, the 'harvesting' process itself stores a life form's consciousness on a Reaper, as each Reaper is actually millions of people each from one species that has been harvested. That's what gives each Reaper its collective consciousness. If capsuleers were 'harvested', would that rob them of the ability to scan into a new clone in the first place?

I would have to ask then, how many of that 'swarm' would be indoctrinated?

With the Reaper invasion fully underway into high security space, the backs of the Empire navies broken, and the CONCORD assembly disassembled, it fell to the capsuleers to fight back against the mechanical menace. The Incursions of the Sansha had been nothing compared to the armadas of Reapers that stormed into highsec and laid siege to the citadels of the major empires, which threatened to overwhelm any and everything that stood in their path.

At first, it was a slaughter for the capsuleers; miners and haulers died in droves, the unprepared lost their faction/deadspace fit mission running ships in piles; fear ran rampant, and the masses of highsec retreated further and further from the homes that they had occupied, until they stood at the gates of the trade hubs that had long since been turned into refugee camps filled with the battle hardened bears. A final push from the Reapers would be all it would take to overwhelm the stargates at Perimeter, New Caldari, and others, but every single man and woman standing watch knew that they would fight till the bitter end on the Jita 4-4 undock.

The fleets assembled, wave after wave of strategic cruisers and battlecruisers threw themselves at the Reaper onslaught as the tip of the spear slammed through Perimeter into Jita. Backed up by a heavy backbone of battleships and the few capitals that could be mustered to fight, ships were sliced apart without mercy, and eventually after the Reapers were forced to brush aside the fallen bodies of their compatriots around the stargates, they stormed Jita and the fight began again on the undock. All hope seemed lost as the reserve ships were depleted and the defenders were forced to deploy mass swarms of suicide Vealtors and Ibises.

But suddenly, cynos appeared on scan; the capsuleers that had defended Jita 4-4 for so long were confused. Reapers after all don't use cyno beacons. Instead, out from those beacons poured the great names of nullsec, bloodied by months of war and feared lost after the long darkness of radio silence issuing from the void of the lawless regions. Supercarriers and Titans filled the skies, doomsdays flashed and fighter bombers swarmed and tore apart the steel carapaces that the Reapers wore as armor. Wormholes that appeared on scan as well issued forth the nomadic peoples that had dwelt there since they had been discovered, and the pirates of lowsec came forth to answer the call; in this singular moment, the squabbling immortals separated by ethnicity, culture, language, and goals, were united, and pushed back the Reapers from Jita, preserving the system from attack.

Though the battle had been won, it had come at a terrible cost; many ships had been lost to the battle, and the production lines would need more time in order to replace the lost vessels. A crack team of elite pilots were assembled, hailing from the most powerful of the alliances from nullsec, wormhole space, lowsec, and even highsec.

Their goal? Simple. Dive deep into the ruined drone regions that the Reapers had made their home, penetrate into the Inner Sanctum of the Forward Command Base, and detonate an EMP charge that would disable the Reapers across drone space while their cohorts assembled in the New Eden star system for the final battle. All accepted this mission, knowing that if they failed, humanity's fleets would be laid to waste and their lives would be forfeit should they be captured or discovered.

And so they set out, going through the gateway into dronespace from LXQ2-T, moving silently through Kalevala and Malpais, through Oasa and the Spire till they reached the crest of the Outer Passage. In a frantic and desperate move as the Reapers encircled them, they flew directly into the structure of the Inner Sanctum, cutting down Reapers as they went before the EMP charge consumed them, and obliterated them before the scans of their brains could be completed. The immortals were gone forever. But their mission had succeeded.

On the field of New Eden, the battle was pitched and furious. The remaining Reapers had put their full might into the conquest of the system and pushing back all that they could. A twenty to one numerical advantage that favored the Reapers would still have been an estimate half of which was true in reality. The mighty carriers and supercarriers cracked and titans burned like candles in the darkness, as hundreds of thousands answered the cries for war. Slowly, ever so slowly, the last hope for humanity came forward, grinding forward over the dead hulks of split starships, over the masses of twisted Reaper bodies as the firewall advanced and the guns of the Last Fleet hurled it's vengeance forward.

Finally, after so many ships had been vaporized and turned to melted slag, after so many Reapers had been annihilated, only a few remained, the most powerful out of all of them. The remaining titans, thousands all together, readied their doomsday devices, overloaded them, and met the scourge of the last reapers head on, splitting open space itself it seemed as they delivered the final blow, destroying themselves in the process.

With this climatic end, the Reaper threat was extinguished. Peace at last descended upon New Eden, and many shared a common bond for the survivors that had destroyed the threat that had existed. The New Eden wormhole was reopened by these titanic forces that had torn open space and time itself, leading capsuleers to an empty and dead galaxy where it seemed no human life had lived. The names of the dead heroes and heroines that had sacrificed their lives to save New Eden were committed to a monument outside of Jita 4-4, where while it has fallen into desrepair in the ensuing thousands of years afterwards, it still offers comfort to those veterans of an age of war that dwell still upon the past.

And so it is that all go forward into the uncertain future, knowing that what they have accomplished gives them the power to do anything they want.

Still a cool story. I think it reflects quite accurately on what the conflict might 'actually' be like if it were to occur. I don't think it would be an easy fight at all. Like you said, Sansha's are piecemeal by comparison.

Why would you say that?

They swing Nukes and Lasers just as big as the ones in Mass Effect and they have tens of millions of ships alone.

They aren't even a major power.

the reapers were only the size of carriers, iirc. they prolly wouldn't last long.

I've been accused of sperging my own fangirlism on this, but I'll stick by it: Serial lifetimes make capsuleers the most powerful force in cross-universe what-ifs.

Killing a podder doesn't get rid of the podder, is just slows them down. To go with that, being effectively immortal opens up the ability to try crazy and unorthodox moves that a normal person would never do.

Reaper ships, sure, bring em. We'll just load up the biggest ships we can with as much explosive destruction as they can hold, then RAMMING SPEED! Who cares if we die, we'll just pop back into a clone anyway.


Pretty much any way to "beat" capsuleers will have to start at "Remove clone networks", which makes it no longer a pod pilot vs. whatever fight.
