If Gabe Newell played eve, would he be a carebear? :D

Kudos to CCP for the Steam option!

This is great news! If it's any comfort, it seems I'm having zero issues taking screenshots using Steam, and was able to upload them to my Steam cloud, as well, so that portion is at least working.

EDIT: As far as using the Steam Workshop, I think a great addition for ease-of-downloading would be to allow people to post Overlay settings for download. These are always handy for new players, and having them readily available in a central location would be immensely beneficial.

So to ensure I'm reading this correctly, we'll have to pay for a new account through steam to be able to purchase plex through steam? Would opening a new account through a trial on steam count? If not any idea how soon we might be able to purchase plex through steam without having to buy another account?

Reason I'm so interested is that I've got around $300 sitting in steam from selling off dota2 crap I traded for when playing that heavily. Don't really buy a whole lot of games so I'd love to be able to just turn this into plex.

Always nice to have better integration, I had bought Eve through steam previously but as other people have said I very quickly just started using the standard launcher. Not a whole lot of interest in going back to using steam unless there was some support for multiple accounts / better launching of multiple characters etc.

edit: also if i don't want to wait and currently have eve attached to my steam account can i still buy the started pack to be eligible to buy plex?

It's been awhile since I used Steam, but my experience was suboptimal to say the least. I'm hoping this isn't step 1 in a move to Steam-only EVE. I would also be a bit miffed if Steam users were getting perks others aren't. It's good to see you guys being flexible and providing lots of options though!

... and CCP Atropos just told me that the Overlay functionality has already been fixed and is available right now. For those who missed it -- enjoy! Smile

My game is broken entirely.

I get (1/4) validating client 0% through Steam and a greyed out play button.

I can't download the game from the Eve support website, as I get archive error, and can't download the files manually (URL unavailable).

Meanwhile, my skill time is wasting away.

Downsides of Steam.

1. Disallows multiple accounts logged in at the same time from one computer. It would be disastrious if Steam was forced just because of this reason.
2. If you are banned from one thing on Steam, you immediately are banned from everything. i.e. if a payment dispute occurs for eve, you lose all your games and account
3. Steam support queue times directly compete with petition time. EVE's petition times might actually be shorter.
4. The old Steam EVE builds had many issues with patches and updates. Many times the launcher could not update itself correctly or the system before the launcher could not find the folders correctly.

I also hope the Steam Overlay doesn't give incentive to remove the IGB. The IGB is incredibly useful with its elementary API and usage. Though it SEVERELY needs a upgrade to the latest Awesomium.

Why is it that STEAM doesn't know how to find my already installed EvE? It finds my EvE Singularity folder, but calls it "Play EVE (Safe Mode)". It also finds "Repair", but under EvE Singularity.

Good work on starting the better STEAM integration, but still a bit to go. ;)

So...with STEAM support being fixed, better integration on the horizon, and STEAM being a supporter of cross-platform games...is there hope for a revival of the Linux client? Big smile

I enjoy the fact that CCP have plans to take over the world!

But I would be really sad if something starts consuming EVE.... care with steam! Don't let them touch the game mechanics.
I don't want any kind of steam POP up in my EVE, nor it running in the back consuming my system resources!

Buy if eve could grab more players from steam community, it would be good, so they quit steam and start playing and worshiping only eve!!! It would be all part of the plan (*Mad evil laugh)!

Since I already have Eve on Steam it won't let me purchase the bounty hunter starter pack so that I can access the PLEx purchase option. Is there a way to remove Eve from my owned games so that I can buy the starter pack? I'd love to give you all this money if I can just find a way lol.

I would be happy if I could install EVE through Steam and just play with my existing account even though i didn't purchase on Steam.

You won't have to worry about this last bit, I'm almost positive, since the subset of players who use Steam to play EVE is probably pretty low, and they aren't moving the client exclusively to the platform.

Nope. Part of the problem too is that if you buy the edition they're selling now, you'd have to make a new account for it to work. There is no current method to combine an existing account to Steam.

In this case, you wouldn't even have to have Steam running. You could log in like normal with a username and password. If you do have Steam running, the intent is to let you log in without fumbling for the EvE Online specific username and password. Other games like APB:R has done this.

Steam would have absolutely nothing to do with the mechanics of the game. CCP (and CSM) has control over that. Even with an influx of new players I doubt we'd see a massive skew in their favor. After all, EvE Online has built itself a decade-long history with a reputation of being harsh. There's no reason to change that now.

As far as resources go, it can use some. Virtually no CPU right now, 193MB of RAM, but that's with some community browsing. Set to small mode, usage drops to about 22MB, and restoring to "large mode" again only uses ~32MB of RAM. If you're hurting for RAM, I suppose it could be an issue, but if you have more than 4GB on a 64-bit OS, you're not going to see much of an impact anyway since EvE Online is a 32-bit client anyway.

In short, if you're using Steam, it'll use RAM. If you're using Steam to decrypt pre-loaded files, it'll use CPU and hard disk. If you're downloading content, it will occasionally dump to the proper download directory once complete.

Resource wise, it's not bad.

1. You can still launch multiple EvE Online clients as far as I can tell. I doubt EvE Online would require Steam based billing for all subscribers, it's a bit late for that.
2. If a payment dispute occurs, you still have access to the game client. As far as everything else, that's a standard billing dispute anyway with any digital store. You really shouldn't be getting into said disputes as you should be able to budget your cash anyway. ;) That or do what I do and throw money in the wallet and buy PLEX when it's time.
3. Depends on your issue, but they have different departments for various issues. Not sure what you're trying to prove on this point.
4. The old Steam-based EvE Online client did have some trouble, but a repair tended to fix that anyway. Supposedly with the release of Odyssey we should be seeing update stability improvements and a restored Steam overlay for Win7/8.

The publicity of a $5 Sale of EVE Online on Steam is what brought me to this game. Steam starts when my computer starts and only closes when my computer shuts down. It uses very few resources especially when minimized to the system tray (~23MB of RAM and virtually no CPU). I run 4 EVE Online clients at max settings simultaneously with Steam in the background and I have no issues with performance (I have 6GB of RAM). I can only launch 1 client from Steam; the rest I launch from "..\Eve Online\bin\ExeFile.exe" from a Shortcut on my Desktop. So that means I only get the Steam Overlay on 1 client which kinda sucks but I am just so happy that I have the Steam Overlay at all.

I would love to integrate my current EVE Online accounts or at the very least, one of them with Steam. I look forward to the day when that is possible.

I understand why CCP would be hesitant to promote purchasing PLEX or subscriptions through Steam as Steam takes a % of all money that goes through it; whereas, they get all of it if you purchase directly through CCP. So I understand why they have limited it to only new accounts purchased through Steam at this time. Still, I hope one day it is possible to manage all of my account subscriptions and game launching directly through Steam.

One final thing, the gameplay tracking and friends list on Steam is a huge social marketing opportunity. I have had 3 or 4 friends that saw me playing EVE Online on their friends list and messaged me about it wanting to learn more about EVE. It was a great opportunity to educate them and hand them a Buddy Invite.

i bought my EvE in Steam a while ago, principally because i was able to use another currency without a international credit card. And for that reason i still using only Steam to get my games. It will be wonderful see the plexes or the GTC in there.

But i wonder, i'm using the same e-mail in EvE and in Steam, in the case of a possibility to unite the accounts, this will not create a conflict?

Steam creates greats opportunity to sell things like package of customizations like clothes, but i believe the workshop cannot be used in EvE, just don't make sense a sandbox game using exclusively tools. It will be deadly to the game if we can start take ships there with real money. And players making customization in workshop will only be viable if the changes affect only themselves, or the game will be turned into a "Pimp my Ride" series.

Well, sorry for the bad english.
