Not sure where to post this BUT, if you are a livestreamer and use virgin media in the UK you may want to have a look here at the NEW STM they have just rolled out across the network.

Virgin Media is poison. Only they, BT and Plusnet have the funds to throw ands on the TV but don't let them fool you, there are hundreds of smallers ISPs across the UK and they all will treat you a million times better and provide a MUCH better service.

That seems rather negative I quite like Virgin Media. They are always very nice when I contact them, their rates are reasonable and my speeds are outstanding.

Considering what their old traffic management policy was, that's fairly good. It used to be not far off the now hourly and two hourly limits during the entire managed time period, and they absolutely crippled your speed for hours if you went over it.
Time periods have changed as well, used to be 9 am till 9pm that was managed.

*hugs his cable broadband.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

True you have no cap BUT, you NOW have STM as do all VM customers, the stupid thing is that you have a 10M upload speed but after uploading 1250MB in an hour your connection will be throttled to 60% of your upload speed. its VERY easy to hit the first limit then the second is 1700MB on top of the first if you hit that you are cut to 75%. This will make streaming VERY hard for if people want to do a few hours of HD video

Yep I know that, STM mechanics WILL be across all ISP's before too long.

Well VM is now owned by Liberty Global and this new STM policy was announced as soon as the EU approved the buyout. I have been thinking about moving over to BT for there infinity 2 service, but I can see BT putting some STM style protocols in place when there network is oversubscribed. All in all this is bad news for the Eve/dust streaming community who like to put stuff out at the highest res they can.

Wait so you have hourly limits? Is that what I am reading there?

If yes, then wow for once I just saw something internet related that's worse than in Australia.

At least they're better than BT. Who want thousands up front to even run a line three feet to the house, and then want vast amounts per month for a ****** service.

I pay for the 60mb Virgin in Bristol

After 5-6pm the speed drops from 60, to less than 5, my ping shoots up and EVE drops connection every hours until about 11pm when it starts speeding up again. They claim they have improved capacity in my area, but its getting worse. The traffic management is a joke, defo would not recommend this ISP.

had a similar issue in plymouth with virgin media. they basically can't supply the demand. we were regularly told this and that they were switching us to a less used node or something equally pretentious.
basically we got like 2 days of usable internet and 2 months of poor internet because they moved every one else and basically recreated the problem they were trying to solve.

however virgin media in birmingham is flawless, 100mb download almost constantly, and if it's ever below that i never notice.

virgin are pretty hit and miss. when it works, it's second to none but when it doesn't work it's absolutely horrible.

Not hourly, but if you exceed the amount you get throttled down for an hour. There are no limits but can cause issues if you stream video

Do you know how much lovefilm uses and if it could be used on this VM plan? I was going to switch to vm after pure **** service from TALKTALK, I don't think anything could be as bad as them.

The STM has existed for atleast 2 years now its not new its just changed, the reason is last month ofcom ruled that VM weren't allowed to use the term unlimited because the old STM restrictions were beyond the moderate STM they allow, hence why this one has lower download restrictions, this is nothing new to VM customers :)

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/news/5790-virgin-media-launches-new-stepped-traffic-management-levels.html gives a reasonably balanced view of it.

Personally I live in an ex-NTL area so I'd rather not have connections tie-wrapped to neighbours drainpipes and permanently overloaded CMTS Roll so I use Sky which around here runs at linespeed 24/7 with no restrictions.
