My characters are frequently not the same age, race or gender as me. Is it any more bizarre for a Caucasian to play an Asian character? Would anybody seriously think someone playing another ethnicity really hates their own background? Are authors who have protagonist of the opposite gender homosexual? Are players who play pirates in Eve unlawful in real life? This type reasoning is rather absurd since our characters don't necessarily reflect us

this is a good point. i have certainly bent genders in other games. in wow i had a tauren male alt. i remember the first skyrim character i created was a huge beefy redguard male with long dreadlocks. (thanks to apachii hair mod lol) when i make characters, one of the important aspects to me is if i can feel a connection to the character. this is especially critical to me in single player games where it's just me experiencing the content. there needs to be a sense that my actions are their actions and have some sort of meaning in the realm of the game. even if it's just in my head for immersion purposes.

I wanted to get in touch with my feminine side...

I have to agree with Ovv Topik here. There's probobly some deep psychological reason that so many guys choose female characters.
Trying to get in touch with their "feminine" side? A touch of homosexuality? Desperation to have contact with a female, even imaginary?
Personally I like being a man and im not ashamed to have all male characters. Playing as a female character feels weird to me.
Well, it's good to see that you are so comfortable with your homosexual side then.

See how that probability works?

Interestingly I have seen (and this does come out in a topic like this thread) men who like women, repress or avoid any feminine side they started out with (out of some kind of fear or true phobia), and end up repressing their own heterosexuality. The guys in the GBTQ world have at least a closet to hide in and and some direction to go even if against their nature.

But men suppressing their own heterosexuality are dually homeless and that's why you meet guys in the IT/Hacker/Gaming world who are experts in their field or game but totally forget how to act properly when a woman is in the room and doing heinously dumb things.

This is why I challenge anybody who is in fear of rolling a female alt to go ahead and put on their big boy panties and just do it. You will find that you won't wake up wanting to decorate the apartment the next day or automatically know what Dennis Miller is talking about in his monologues.

Because at the time, Achura had by far the best stats, and there was no talk of normalizing the stats across races like we see now.

And Achura men were just godawful ugly.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnKk2ysyNrA : go to 1:15 where they introduce the blood lines, pretty much sums it up.

I too had this exact thought process when I first started this game. Shallow huh but they really were pug ugly.

That's more to do with a lack of home training than anything else. I'd be more in shock to find any chat/voice where the kids were trained to not state certain things in mixed company. In the time I was growing up ladies and men didn't converse like they do these days, the guys BSed among themselves, but in mixed company they were more polite.

I wince going into TS/Vent in games as the players talk so obscenely, as it's worse than the crap in chat. Guys these days have zero concept of mixed company dialogue. It's also creepy watching what the ladies will become in such an environment to "fit in", as being some sex kitten or trash talker.

But I play male toons to get away from the typical creeps online. Too many play games as a means to cyber, and not actually knowing who's behind the screen, don't want to be bothered by perverts. Games, especially like in EvE, tend to attract weirdos with strange tastes, that if seen on the street in RL, any sane person would bypass quickly.

On the flip side I know women who play WoW who never go into voice chat because if they do, look out.

In a way, men playing female avatars is like concealed carry of guns. Criminals don't know who is armed, and are reluctant to victimize people in such areas where that activity is going on. So when these cretins lurching around in MMOs don't know who is really female or not, they are not as willing to go into sleeze mode.

Kind of ironic though to see that some people who could behave in such cretinous manner would feel embarrassed over anything such that they do (if at all) when they accidentally hit on a dood.

I picked one because in every MMO I play, I play a female character. I do so because generally females always looked better (better animations, look better in armor, look cooler). Male characters always looked like over muscled jocks with square jaws fake sun tan.

Females are kinda stereotyped too, but at least they are pleasing to look at.

So why break the tradition in EvE? It would be boring if the male 95% played males. You wouldn't see any female characters at all.

And another thing, its pretty funny when people just auto assume you are a girl. I don't know why but it amuses me.

That depends a lot on the character. Many portraits just shout out "man behind the wheel", and not just the "look at my bazoongas" type of portrait. A natural looking avatar strongly reinforces the "feminine" impression.

What intrigues me is, is there a way to tell that there is a woman behind a male avatar? Question

I rather stare at the ass of a women than the ass of a guy, unless you are into that sorta thing.

Replace ass with boobs or face as you see fit.

Also, the internets needs more boobs.

You can never be 100% it's a "man behind the wheel", even if it's super bazoongas and super slutty weird looking, there are women out there that rolled avatars like that.
And yes, there are also women out there rolling male avatars.

Most people on EVE are male, so every time you guess a guy created the avatar the odds of guessing right are in your favor.

My main is male... and my alts are female.

When you are sculpting a character that represents "you", I find people have a habit of making something attractive to them from another perspective.

Which is why my alt is a cute redhead.

I like beefcake. He's not going to be feminine at all. Lol

If you look at Eve Boards statistics the ratio for female Achura is higher than any other bloodline. I didn't realize until this thread that it was due to the old male model design. Weird how much of an impact this made. The old female design and especially the new female Achura is one of my favorites.

Same reason I fly Gallente ships. They are better looking. (OK, OK, I will admit the new non-lopsided Caldari ships like the Rokh and Scorpion are good looking. And the Domi manages to drag Gallente ships average down.)

Trained Ayari up for about two months, got accepted into CAIN and went, "No way I'm retraining all that again" and stuck with her. Despite being in an RP corp, I don't really RP much. Any RP I do is usually non gender specific and relates to how much Ayari likes shooting people in the face.

As a joke though, I sometimes carry Marines in the hold of my ship as an equivalent to Exotic Dancers.
