Killed arriving at gate from warp?

Hello, sorry if this has been answered but I'm not finding anything from searching. I'm a returning casual player that hasn't played in over a year and I had something strange happen last night. I was warping across a lowsec sytem in my cloak/mwd fit mammoth like I always used to do, but the exact second I reached the gate I was instantly podded before the jump happened.

Is there a new mechanic that allows vulnerability when coming out of warp and jumping to the next system? Does lag or something cause this? I was not on autopilot. My physical actions were as follows: jumped into the system->cloak/mwd align to target gate->used "jump" key-> warped across system-> insta podded by gatecamp the exact second I reached the gate, before I could complete the jump.

Additional info: I was killed by an Ammatar Navy Large EMP Smartbomb. Is it possible I was collateral damage from other fighting? It happened the exact instant I warped in so I dont see how I could have been targeted.

smartbombs don't require a target.

Fit a bunch of large smart bombs in the highs. Large ship = large blast radius.

Same thing happened when I first started. Received a warning before enetering lo-sec to buy a skill book. When i tried to leave "poof". Wasn't a smart bomb, it was customs.

Once I got my security status above 0.5 it stopped.

Not to turn this into the new player forum, but can you start out with a negative standing? This started after I finished my tutorial, went to Rens, and then took my first trip to Amamake. I swear I did not have any negative standing except maybe with angels. I do know that when my overall standing hit 0.5 it stopped.

There's sometimes a lag between landing and jumping with the jump key when you're cloaked. You probably landed, decloaked, approached gate a few meters and got hit before you jumped.

I was uncloaked for the duration of the warp, including when I arrived. Looks like I got unlucky or they were amazingly quick with the smartbomb. I wasnt aware that there was any vulnerability when warping to a gate using "jump", and now I know there is a window before the jump goes through when you can get jacked. Thanks for the replies.

If you were uncloaked chances are he saw you warping on d-scan and got set up early. :)

Same thing happened to me last week.
Best advise I had was:

when you enter system,

* open your map;
* set it on solar system view;
* find your exit gate on the map;
* check the path between your location and your exit gate;
* find a different celestial that's not in line with that path;
* warp to that celestial first before warping to the exit gate.

I was ending a milk-run in a Nemesis thru Rancer a week ago, flying gate to gate (a bad move, I know), and as I'm slowing down after the run I see a cluster of BSs (Rokhs, I think), a bright flash, and suddenly my ship was gone and my pod was sitting at home. :) Either these guys PERFECTLY timed their smarties blast, or I perfectly timed my arrival. P Boom, that fast. Congratulated one of the guys and had a good laugh over it.
