I want to play as an out and out explorer, but can't find a sensible ship/fitting...

Let's hope your avi never undocks from the forum, lobotomite. moohoohoohaahaahaaaaa!!!

I have been training drones for over a week now and have another week to go. I watched this and was inspired.

EDIT :

Granted this isn't something one just jumps into at too low of a level. But hopefully it will give something to work towards or give thought how you want your character to head.

I'm still a noob myself. I'm just sharing what I found in hopes someone else can benefit from it.

I wish you well in your journeys.

I've taken to warping across a system and placing a Location Marker along the warp path and warping back to it. Lurking in deadspace seems the safest bet until I can fit cloaking :)

You'll also want to do that in a cloaked ship aswell. If you linger around gates you have a risk of being decloaked.
While cloaked, objects like ships, cans, whatever will decloak you if they are closer then 2km.

A spot like that is usually called a safespot. Deadspace is something else: http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Deadspace

As for rats and the Imicus, I have Probe Launcher and a Laser in my high, Codebreaker I and T2 Shield Booster in mid; I guess I need advice for the low fitting/relevant training, though. ;)

The idea is to use your scan ship (in your case imicus) to find and bookmark (locationmarker) the site(s). You then fly to a station, switch to more powerful combat ship and run the site.

When you are in 0.4 (or lower) systems, keep in mind that other ppl can scan down the same sites and get you. You can use your direction scanner (d-scan) as an early warning.

Will have to read up on using the Directional Scan, as I haven't actually used it yet.

My starting system (Conoban) is surrounded by fairly dead systems for scanning I've found so far, most have been empty barring Blood bases and wormholes; this makes ship swapping for scans a bit of a pain as I'm having to jump a fair few times away from 'home' to find something useful.

The loss of my first Imicus (which I noobishly took for a spin without insurance) gave my ISK a bit of a hammering. Going back to the drawing board, running security missions and aiming for a cruiser.

Grab the PDF of the system maps here: http://www.ombeve.co.uk/

Get out of the starter area of Conoban, you are only a few jumps from Amarr which is a major trade hub (therefore lots of players).

This video and this one helped me get started using the D-scan.

This series helped me understand a lot about the game. Seamus is a little hard on the pronunciation os his 'S"...PBig smile otherwise the videos are well spoken and the information proved invaluable.

The cruisers grew very attractive to me the second week of playing.

Seeing I needed to establish a method of income, to fund my exploration, I choose the Trad route. Now that I have steady flow of ISK, I can look forward to the more expensive line of ships that I so desire, like...

Vexor
Pilgrim - Another great series for...well anyone, and not just a new player.
Gila - This one, while rather expensive, is surprisingly easy to get into. Just a couple of weeks as to the 60 days for the other advanced cruisers. This thing is and tank and a half...BEFORE the fit. The drone bay is huge. However, I must admit that the Recon class is hard to look away from. Especially that Pilgrim. That is an amazing looking vessel.

Confirming that if you want to go into the scouting business, training toward cloaking, covert ops, and eventually recon ships, is the path forward. The added bonus is that recons can also be extremely powerful force multipliers in PvP. As far as running sites goes, the pilgrim *can* be set up to be an all-in-one probing, salvaging, hacking, and analyzing explo vessel, though you might not want to do that as it lacks the damage output to kill anything particularly quickly. If you plan to find explo sites and then run them yourself, I'd suggest using a probe-bonused frigate (like the imicus; all races have one) to find and bookmark the sites, and then coming back with a ship that has more teeth to kill the NPC rats.

The best way to be a scout, of course, is to team up with someone else who has a fleet that needs a scout. Even if you lack hardcore combat skills, becoming handy with scan probes and directional scan will make you attractive to many player corps. A good scout often makes the difference between a successful operation and a dead fleet.

I've been playing for about a month now, and I've had a similar experience. First time scanning in low-sec, I blew away all the rats... then someone in a very, very large ship warped in, one-shot me and then podded me. Took me a minute to figure out WTF just happened. Shocked

The Imicus is a good ship to scan with, but it's very bad at ratting. I've taken to using the Imicus to scan down a site, then a Catalyst to clear it out (moved on to a Vexor now). There's really no point outfitting the Imicus with weaponry, as it won't be able to deal enough damage with a single turret to matter. Just get a lock on the site, bookmark it and return in a combat ship to clear it.

As others pointed out, you can run the basic Career missions, followed by the Epic story arc, and you'll wind up with some spare ships, equipment and enough ISK to get going. (The last couple missions in your Epic arc may require a buddy to help with the fights.)

Oh, and if you stick with Gallente, use hybrid weapons. Most Gallente ships have bonuses to hybrids.

Edit: Almost forgot, the winter expansion (Retribution) will revamp several of the ships, including the Imicus. It'll get better focused as a scanning frigate, with some extra drones and a high slot for combat, so it can fight against low-ranked rats but you'd still want another ship for dealing with anything Rank 2 or higher.
