Eve is far from dying and it will be here long after many other games are long gone. However if you remember the moments around http://go-dl.eve-files.com/media/1106/CCP.mp4 (not worksafe) you realize that it is unlikely that CCP would try another magical approach which would suddenly bring twice as much subscribers and many times more cash over night. They plan more careful now and listen what customers have to say. Eve evolves but with the speed it is capable of without taking unnecessary risks and leaps of faith. I honestly believe that CCP is now days a company which would make good example to many bigger ones.... and that withing 5 years or so the subscription count of EVE will be much higher than it is now. The work is in progress and goes to right direction.

Seriously, is one of you out there doing something to keep Eve from dying or something? All I see is everyone saying that Eve's dying, and yet it's still going. Is one of you sons of a bantam helping it, giving it life support or something?

Stop it. Think how many bittervets you are making sad because they're wrong. Stop it right now.

It's me: I'm the one that's keeping it from dying.

It's all me.

Although I can confirm that it involves bacon, the particulars must never be spoken of amongst any who are not of Us.

The thing that keeps Eve from dying is a lack of competition.

As long as I keep forking over my $40 a month, the servers will stay up.

You're welcome.

What kind of competition do you suspect could draw people away from EVE. What features that EVE lacks would make people switch to a new game?

Not dying, apparently.

Sandbox would be the main thing I would think, but another sandbox spaceship game would draw many from Eve.

Why?

What exactly about this new sandbox would make players not only try it but cancel their subscriptions to this game. What features or designs would pull players away from EVE and make them want to play this new game instead.

I hear this no competition thing a lot but WoW has a ton of competition and is still leader in the Genre. What in this game would make EVE stop being leader in the Sci Fi Spaceship Genre.

With games like Starlite, Kerbal Space Program, and X Rebirth on the horizon, we'll soon see if thats true.

I don't see those 3 games competing in the same Genre as a massively multiplayer space economic and war simulator.

There are two Spaceship MMO's that stomp on EVE's territory coming.

Taikodom: A twitch based shooter sandbox with an economy, conquerable space and free roam.
Nexus Conflict: Instanced Large Ship Combat spin off of the failed Black Prophecy series. The controls and combat have been described as EVE like.

Is X Rebirth an MMO?

Nope, but for some like myself that doesn't really matter. Not everyone plays EVE for the capitalism, I for one came to this game looking for exploration within a vast virtual universe, and if I find another game can do that better, that doesn't even cost $15 a month, well we'll see.

Honestly though the one I'm watching is Starlite, a space based MMO developed in partnership with NASA that will focus on realism and the actual science behind space travel, nothing against CCP but EVE can't even begin to compete with that.

Doesn't sound very sandbox to me

That is just because EVE Players keep adding more sentences to the definition of sandbox until the point where if any game does something different then EVE it is no longer a sand box.

Sandbox basically means free roam universe without linear level designs and many ways to achieve goals.

Doesn't mean I am excited about being locked into one set of ships and have to role a new character for everything but that alone doesn't make it not a sandbox, just a game I probably would not play.

Quote:
Will the game have PvP?

Yes! Taikodom: Living Universe will be heavily focused on the conflicts that erupt when factions, corporations, and lone pilots clash for power, money, and the limited resources of the known universe. There are some areas where PvP is strictly discouraged by NPC patrols, and other areas where combat is completely open and unrestricted.

What is the PvE like?

Players of traditional MMOs will be familiar with the PvE content in Taikodom. You can take missions, battle NPCs, and battle bosses.

Is there a guild or clan system?

Yes; players can create corporations, which form the backbone of the conflict in Taikodom. Corporations will often find themselves at odds with one another for resources, money, and even talented pilots.

Will Taikodom have servers/shards like other games?

A need may arise in the future to open more than one server, but Taikodom is designed from the ground up to simulate a massive section of space, accessible to many thousands of players all at once.

These are the more EVE like qualities of the game.
