If tasteless jokes about people gave rise to civil lawsuits as easy as the Internet Matlocks here claim, you'd see a lot more well-behaved people online. I can't count how many "die in a fire" comments and other remarks I've seen and read on the Internet, statements which are much more violent than Mittens' comment. If you think that merely uttering a statement that wishes harm upon someone gives rise to civil liability, you need to go back to Internet Lawschool. Any in-depth study of the laws you're alluding to would let you know that the burden of proof for IIED and other torts is quite high.

Let's not forget that it was Wis's mail that opened the door to "suicide" comments in the first place. Mittens comment was simply going along with the content of the mail he received from Mackinawbot. Had that mail message said suicideganking made him vote for Ron Paul, then Mittens may have simply said "Incidentally, if you want Ron Paul to win..." I'm not saying the comments weren't tasteless, but give me a break. This is not grounds for a lawsuit, at least not one that's going anywhere.

Prince, that's actually fairly disturbing.

How much of a stretch is it to realize that either you or I could lose our temper some day and say something hurtful on a forum/tweet/facebook page.

I wonder how many catty remarks our teenage daughters and sons have made online in an arguement with someone.

Cyber Bullying, an organized and relentless attempt to harrass someone online is one thing. A single tweet is something else entirely.

Must have been a dozy.

Good job Internet Matlock. Obviously, a strict liability terrorism case where someone tweeted a bomb threat is relevant to a potential claim of IIED. Not to mention, Mittens' comment wasn't even made on the Internet.

I try to respect other peoples point of view, even if that point of view is racist they have a right to express it as long as they don't harm others or break any laws.

However, by the same token, I have every right to make them look like an idiot for it. Smile

Unless, of course, I get sued for cyber bullying because I hurt his feelings. Ugh

A football player collapsed during a game. Some 21 year old kid without the basic social inhibitors posted a series of tweets that seem remarkably familiar looking over this thread. (Apologies, the link that came in from my regular feed for the tweets was from Huffington Post) I believe he was given a jail sentence of 21 days.

It was a racist Tweet aimed at Footballer who had just collapsed on the field. I have no sympathy with guy and he deserved everything he got.

However you also have the case of 2 guys who posted messages on Facebook inciting other people to riot during the London riots and they were jailed for 4 years each.

They ask for people to turn up a pre-arranged meeting point outside a McDonalds in which nobody did, including them.

Just to point out they were also blind drunk at the time.

The next day they both apologised and deleted the messages without any outside interference, however they were both still arrested and sentenced for 4 years.

Firstly I think you should read about the case before making yourself look silly. The guy went down for six months and deservedly so, cyberbullying is very high profile in the uk at the moment.

Secondly, he made the comments during a live stream from fanfest on the internet.

to all you people who laugh and love what your fearless leader said while he was drunk off his ass and say it's okay because he was drunk when he said
then you're all saying it's okay when one of you is drunk off their butts in real life and gets in a car and plow into innocent civilians and kill them because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. or better yet, it's okay for someone else to be drunk and do it to one of your loved ones then, too
That's what you're all saying by laughing at your leader because he was drunk, whether it was fanfest and eve is just a game, it's okay for him to do that. BULLSHET!!!
you all need to wake up and smell the ugly roses because that's what you're agreeing to basically
I don't want to hear or smell any of your snide remarks, game or not, he had no right to say that
and giving him 10 billion isk for destroying his fleet of mackinaws is a suckup and begging for forgiveness. how many people have you goonies scammed out of their hard earned isk and I don't give a damn real money or not, game or not? that person worked for it and you robbed them of it
By the way, alcohol brings out the true side of a person, so if you act like this when you're drunk, then you're that way in real life
you scam and rob people blind in game, you do it in real life to someone else.
nice people don't become scumbags and lowlifes in a game if they're not in it real life.
so you want to make it up mittens? have your people pay back all the people you scammed through the years and give them interest, too. give them back their isk and ships they paid for and you never gave to them then go meet them in null sec and fight like a real warrior and beat them at their game
and to all the members who were on stage with mittens also drunk off their asses, your justice is coming later.
long live PL/Raiden/NCDOT

btw, I am a main because I don't care for the trash in CFC especially mittens buddies on stage, eh, Mikey Bolton and DNS Black? lmao. Have another jaigerbomb on me, Black and I hope Detroit doesn't gain another 25% unemployment. all you drunk clowns on stage will get your justice in REAL LIFE for laughing at mittens comments. I'll put up with your spy alts you have in my DCM corp. EvilTwisted
