I'll tell you what is the most dodgy thing about DUST imho... it's the apparent lack of a literal or metaphorical "sticky grenade". In every FPS I've ever played there is the potential for that "prayer" play. That moment when your shield is down and you have a sliver of health left, and you are about to die, but 'oh wait! what's this?! I still have a rocket/sticky/bomb/whatever' and you take your ordinance in and sacrifice yourself taking out 2 or 3 enemy players. That is a great moment in the game. The smug self-satisfaction of turning the tables. ...or that 'prayer' shot where you land the perfectly placed sniper shot from across the map. ...or that 'prayer' lobbed sticky that was throw way up in the air, bounced off of 2 grav lifts, and caught a vehicle in flight. These are great moments for FPS people. They also make for great videos and advertising. I sincerely hope that those kind of videos become prolific after the launch of DUST, and not lame videos showing 10 dudes opening up on a single guy with these purported 'logistics' support armor guys making the target appear invulnerable. The latter will turn people off to the game faster than anything.

Dare I ask...

CCP... gotz sticky grenade?

I really like how BF3 is using player made videos on youtube to help promote their product. Nothing staged, just gameplay and some epic videos at that.

I personally would like to see Halo tactics, stay in Halo....Don't want nor need a Sticky grenade in Dust. i'll be just fine with traditional frags

wow a crow in the planets atmosphere. prolly something that was discussed and tried a long long time ago and i'm pretty sure that was abandonend when they found out that eve and dust pilots would not be sharing the "same interactive game space per say" i hope i'm wrong because that would be just too awsome. bombing runs from within eve, wow imagine entering the atmosphere and doing a rocket/bombing run to help your troops on the ground. imagine looking up from dust and watching a massive piloted ship fly in as support.

2006 is a long time ago (even longer when you think of the work they did to get to that stage) and a lot of things change in the development span of a game i would imagine. who could not like that concept if it could be made to work and balanced properly. it would change gaming as we know it today that's for sure.

they probably scrapped the idea when they realized that you would just be doing this:

right click - warp to planet at 0
fly to planet and wait to enter atmosphere
double click in direction
right click target - lock target - orbit/circle at range
click weapons module..........and wait

the problem is that introducing this kind of gameplay would require that they make our ships flyable like a sim and not how ships fly in space (in eve currently). NOW, they COULD make the controls change entirely once you enter the atmosphere so that you could use WASD and mouse for flight combat BUT then that would also require that they scrap releasing on PS3 and go to PC only, unless they could figure out a way to streamline both PC/PS3 players fighting in the atmosphere seamlessly.

This would be a challenge, and if done right would be epic. I love CCP but seems to me lately, that they are just not very good a achieving tough goals and/or just too lazy to do it. It would be a lot of work.

Re: Atmospheric flight

Unless it was changed, doesn't Tritanium and atmospheric temperature for human survival don't mix too well?

The whole atmospheric video is fake.

It's just a video of FIS set inside one of those space storm type areas during some missions, you know the ones where your ship is damaged every so often or something like that.

Torfi Frans Olafsson: Haha. Do you mean when are we going to lynch the people that fooled people at Fanfest by mocking-up that atmospheric demo?

I guess the right answer to it is that DUST 514 involves vehicular combat on planets, so that will be the first implementation of ever seeing it. The spaceships in EVE are actually not fit for atmospheric flight, and we don't have any immediate plans to allow you to go down to planets.

Tritanium is atmospheric stable once you alloy it with other metals.

If it truely was unstable in atmosphere then your ships own atmospheric envrionment would rot it out.

Of course this could explain why ships eventually fail in space after being unattended for so long.

So, not a fake, then.

It was shown, it did happen, it did get recorded by a camera.

All you've done is point out that whatever CCP show you at Fanfest is probably a mock-up and probably doesn't exist in terms of game development.

Congrats on proving my point: players that get dangled carrots may take umbrage, and seek to destroy other peoples fun...like goonswarm have, did, and will no doubt continue to do.

It's fake in the same way that if I showed you a cat and told you it was a dog.

It's a video of a background in certain level missions, which exists right now in the game. The fake lies in the fact that people are saying it's a video of atmospheric flight, which it isn't, it's just regular flying in space footage.

It's like if someone took those videos of the new nebulae at the last fanfest and made a youtube video of it saying that these were backgrounds to new regions of space that you can access via the EVE gate in the next expansion. Complete bullshit basically.

What I'm pointing out is that you shouldn't take youtube videos all too seriously, because you'll be in for a surprise when you find all those 'legit' UFO videos.

bolded the important part for you...
Torfi then goes on to say the [EVE] ships aren't capable of atmospheric flight...

Reduction to the ridiculous to argue a point is the lowest form of logic.

They showed it and labeled it 'Atmospheric flight'.

Velicitia wrote:

Yes - they changed their minds, nothing wrong with that...except that you have shown EVE players Atmospheric flight, which you then decide to put into another game altogether that runs on a system that is incompatible with the system you play EVE on.

Whatever the reasons were or are, the fact is this was shown as work in progress/mock-up/whatever that shall now not be in EVE.

Remember when they showed Dust at FF? Nathan even commented whilst it was being demo'd to the crowd "So, after all these years we finally have Atmospheric Flight in EVE?" to which the crowd went nuts.

Want me to dig out that youtube link as well?
