I am definitely in support of a high resolution texture pack. If it can be optional, that's even better since not everyone can make use of it but for those of that could, it would be a fantastic addition to the improvements that are already being implemented.

Why should everyone with upgraded PC's be punished or held back because of those who can't or don't upgrade to stay with the times?

It should already have been an option from the very start IMO
