Do you really deny that in slightly different circumstances, his actions could have caused serious harm to another player? That his actions were with little regard to what damage they might cause?

A ton of media exposure (particularly interviews wanting to know if you really are considering suicide over a video game - a double dose of humiliation, unfortunately) would have been far worse than anything that would have happened to him in-game.

"Look any reason why you need to talk like that? I have now reported you. I dont need to listen to your bad tone. If you cant have a grown up conversation then leave the thread["

So, what you're saying is - you were only planning on bullying him just enough to make him more miserable, but all those mean people in the media - they just don't know where the line is?

One or more of these sorts of cases need to be publicised, and the people involved punished harshly enough that people like the goons realise it's not acceptable anymore.

There is a line, and by being an apologist here, you are on the wrong side of it.

I'm pretty sure the job description as CSM Chairman includes the words "community", "communication" and "manager".

Which implicitly makes it a position reporting to the PR department (I'm pretty sure the PR department employs 3x the amount of people than the programmers department, anyway)

Further more, the PR department should not under any circumstance employ people who can not represent their corporation or organisation, under heavy influence of alcohol or drugs - regardless. Alcohol and drugs are considered essential and much needed tools for proper bonding and communication related to their products or services, and as such all employees must maintain self control and better judgement regardless of these external factors.

When cockups occurs, as in the case of Mittens, the subjects are usually quickly relieved of their position, and their (promising) career comes to an unfortunate, but necessary, end.

I'm sure Mittens is a likeable dude all in all, but a major cockup is a major cockup, and somebody will have to take the fall. I'm pretty sure it won't be Hilmar...

Cheers

He didn't generate bad publicity for CCP, CCP did. They put a livestreaming camera in front of a drunk guy and let it linger for a good, long while. They don't get to act all shocked and awed then the drunk guy says something problematic, as drunk people tend to do that. CCP actually vetting his presentation (i.e. having no issue with him even beinging The Wis and the original email up in the first place) is just icing on that cake.

It's nothing about that at all.

Its like you said he made his amends.

That's the entire point.

Yes, he ****** up. But he is no different than any one of you or even me. For a lot of these guys, they had their minds made up weeks ago that Mittens was some kind of anti-Christ, No apology will change their minds. They are blinded by their own personal bias.

He is actually a pretty chill and nice guy, and everyone who has actually talked to him or dealt with him can attest to this.

So I think it's a little bit ******** for all of the people who were bitter about his success to suddenly act like they are perfect and have never gotten drunk and said some hurtful **** that they didn't mean.

i totally agree... but what im aggitated at is some of these guys coming to alex's defence basically saying cyber bullying is harmless and people should HTFU, and quite obviously saying this while stone cold sober.

difference was mittens said what he said practically wasted, and these pricks are saying "...ohh yahh +1 to that' without the rediculous drunken haze and moral vacuum that can sometimes follow it.

I can respect that, and My initial reaction was HTFU.

Not so much about what was said. Because no I don't agree with what was said at all. I am not saying that cyber bullying is without harm.

But we (eve players) are by and large a bunch of jerks. We say hurtful things to each other all the time. We have some of the most personal and most bitter rivalries of any game. In no other game is there that level of hatred towards the enemy and emotions expressed.

And in this situation Alex owned to his mistake. He not only issued an apology to all of us. But he went out of his way to make things right with the pilot he wronged.

If the pilot who was wronged has no problem accepting the apology and moving forward. Then what right does anyone have to stand on their soap boxes and exploit the situation for their own political gains?

The main difference here being, neither you nor me are representing CCP - so we can tell anybody to F..off and go kill themselves, in the most hurtful way possible. In worst case we'll receive a ban for breaking the TOS/EULA/etc.

However, CCP and their employees, can not do this. In particular when its encouraging a major part of the EVE community, in which he is no less a major motivational figure - to harass another (apparently suicidal) player, to efficiently speed up the suicide process.

What may appear as a very thin and insignificant line said by a player, is in fact a massive grand canyon said by a person employed by CCP. It may appear as a relatively harmless joke to you, but really is (insert legal mumbo jumbo here) very serious for other people. In fact, his statement can be prosecuted in most countries and on most continents, exception being Somalia or something. And, you should think he, being a lawyer and all, would know this...

This case is, as we rant on this forum, a significant liability on CCP's end. If that dude (the subject of Mittanis outburst) actually hurts himself directly or indirectly (regardless of relation to Mittens verbal or written outbursts), a massive lawsuit might be piling up in the horizon...

Just my $0.02

The guy is a victim who's been ridiculed beyond belief (published convo and in-game name). Faced with two choices (excluding the worst choice of suicide in rl of course): either be the bitter man and keep ranting on the CSM chairman and be harassed by the chairman's lackies as long he's playing eve, or take the easy way out by accepting the "donation" and "apology".

Consider he's still playing Eve, it shouldn't be hard to see which is the easier way. And just because mittani issued a half-hearted apology and a bunch of ISK and the guy has not killed himself does not excuse mittani's from receiving a proper punishment for his actions.
