Due to the unexpected illness and hospitalization of one our academic center instructors, I was called upon to proctor semester examinations yesterday between patrols. It turned into a busier than normal day. This morning, a single person was rescued from a deathcan. These situations always touch me deeply. There middle-aged man was OK; a bit traumatized as expected. I spoke to him on coms while in transit and then again in the hangar. "What happened?" He didn't know. His holder simply told him that he was being sent to manage a mining party a few systems away. What he was not told was that the mining party was located in the State. Non-capsuleer pilots rarely accept illegal fares in high security space. Unlike us capsuleers, if destroyed by customs, there's a good chance your dead and not coming back. The man was dumped at the border.

"Do you want to return to your holder?" "No" He went on to say that his life and treatment were not bad. He was educated in technical skills and management skills, was well housed and cared for. "Were you born a slave?" "No, I was on an engineering crew aboard an Astral Mining ore boat when it went adrift after a reactor failure. My lifepod took me into Amarrian territory..." His story is typical of a good portion of those we encounter. His "holder" was a business man who owned a small, multi-generational mining company. When asked if he wished to continue his religious education, he responded, "What religious education?" Apparently, religion was not part of his experience as a slave.

This is not always the case, but is often the case. I can state this as a generalization that seldom has exceptions: Religious Holders do not ship off their slaves illegally across borders

I have not yet exited my pod, but am making this journal entry while watching a monitor of 108 new residents walking down the egress ramp of the DSS Mayflower. We just arrived from Ashokon where we met Captain Kazha Cavin-Guang for the first time. These 108 were rescued by him and welcomed to our Matriculation program.

Many of the center residents like to be present at the egress area when we return from patrol to greet the newly rescued people and help where they can. The faces that these 108 see as they exit the ship are faces like their own who also have been rescued. Those who have been here a while understand the looks of apprehension and anticipation written on the faces of these new residents. I look forward to taking my evening meal with some of the new arrivals. Let hope and optimism rule the day and light the future for these 108 men, women, and children.

Well-done, crew of the DSS Mayflower. Our return trip took us through Gallente, Concord, and State territories requiring seamless cloak operation and a concentrated focus. The flight was without incident. All of us thank Captain Cavin-Guang. I found him to be a humble, sincere man. I hope we meet again in our service to the larger needs of humanity.

Two reports (IGS posts) of deathcans in Ashokon with 12 hours. A long time ago, we looked at that system when deciding where to concentrate our patrols. Being few in number, we decided that the traffic within that system was light in spite of the fact that it is the border crossing in that area. We may investigate patrolling it at least now and then. The problem is that we have no way of knowing when we need to be there vs when we need to be other places. The crossing from the Mandate into the Republic also has occasional deathcans. Ultimately, we will remain where we can rescue the most people with the resources we have.

115.11.23 18:43 Not-Me 38 people (Ashokon)

I was able to convince an associate to conduct patrols on Ashokon at least for a limited time. As a direct result, 38 people were saved today. I'm hoping we can convince this pilot to continue patrolling on a regular basis. Since there are three stations in the system, the resources and infrastructure is readily available for a temporary center and maybe a permanent center. Dr. Naltkh is sending staff from Edmal today. For now, 38 people are being tended to with basic means until new staff can set up the center. We may select a facility across the border instead. Part of this depends on the piloting methods of whoever happens to be patrolling. Most rescues near gates can be most safely executed using a gate jump followed by cloaked flight to station. We'll make that determination later today.

I have recently been accused of questionable associations. So be it. Let me clarify one thing. DSTON will accept Matriculants from anyone; from the devil himself if need be. I care not what association you hold if you have refugees who need shelter and care, we will take them under our wing. Let me clarify, if a Matriculant wishes to leave our centers and go elsewhere, we will help them do so as we have in the past. We have detailed how this has happened in past posts. Let me clarify, never have we nor never will we sell any Matriculant once they are in our care. We also will never hand over any detainee to the death penalty, slavery or torture. There.

Those who wish to "conclude the worst" about us and our work will do so regardless. But... the work goes on anyway.

That's interesting, because 38 slaves are the exact same number that i pulled out of a cargo module floating off the Emsar gate in the Ashokon system, on this date and some time before that timeframe.

Dehydrated a bit, but otherwise good shape after my medic took a look at them. They are doing well and out of Amarr territory.

115.11.24 18:45 Lucius Tark'in 45 people, Ballak Churon 10 people and 10 people

Mission cargoes involving the transport of slaves sometimes involves customs status that treats the cargo as a whole (group of slaves) and sometimes as an individual. When it is the latter, the same customs penalties are enacted at border crossings. It may be that there are a number of identical agent missions being issued that involve certain numbers of slaves in transit. We have found that 10 is the single most common number we have seen. The second report above was of a single can yet the 20 people were in two equal groups.

We'll keep an eye on Ashokon for a while even though we have not seen a lot activity there in the last 24 hours.

115.11.24 00:27 nickles 1 former slave, one copy of Pax Amaria
115.11.25 13:39 Saduwa Vanassa 50 people

Given the wide distribution of the Pax Amaria I am a bit surprised that we have not picked one up in a death can before. The first report above was of one former slave and a one copy of the Pax Amaria, unsigned. We asked the survivor if it was his personal copy, but he indicated that it just happened to be in the passenger compartment with him when he was jettisoned.

The report below represents a significant addition to our Matriculation program NUVOS and the Khanid Slavery Abolition Fund. KSAF has followed through on their indication that regular groups of slaves would be liberated from the fetid flesh markets of the Khanid Kingdom and transferred to the Matriculation program of the Disciples. This group of 340,012 represents the station market capacity of any one moment in any Khanid Transport station found in khanid space. These were received in Khanid Prime. We have spent many months and continue to work to build up infrastructure in the Khanid Kingdom for this and any future growth as brought to us by KSAF. DSTON thanks NUVOS and those of generosity who have given toward the significant expense involved.

DSTON has received an interesting proposal for participation in a possible option for interested matriculants in a planetary settlement where they could work, study and meditate. We'll be considering the details at our next Development Office Meeting.

Our third rescue in Ashokon is reported above. We plan to continue patrols there. The pilot we have on site has told us that he is in a time of transition and it works for him to spend the time there. We appreciate it. We can keep a small staff there. The resident growth should be slow. This situation has reminded us that we really also ought to be patrolling the crossing between the Mandate and the Republic as well. Its just that we are spread a bit thin as it is.

It is a tremendous relief to report my first completed rescue since accepting command of the DSS Assist and deploying to patrol the Ammatar border with the Republic. I appreciate the patience and professionalism of the experienced crew of this vessel. Experience staff also waited and prepared our home base and was ready for those rescued. Reluctance and uncertainty are small words to describe the first few hours of operation. However, I was very surprised at the effectiveness of the training I received and the ability of my clone mind to not only assimilate knowledge but also of the amazing interface between mind and ship. Yes, I've flown before, but only to get from one point to another, never to accomplish something with a ship, ship systems and a crew. This was a new experience.

I only recently completed the necessary skills to pilot the Assist and take up these duties. As a rescued former slave myself, there is something very profound and humbling about doing this work.

We rescued 20 slaves who had been abandoned at the Odatrik gate in Jark. All are in stable condition and being attended by our staff. We have yet to guage what sort of rescue volume we can expect in this area. Time will determine.

ALERT
Pilots who jettison passengers near borders and abandon the can hoping that pilots such as ourselves will rescue them... BE AWARE, that if their are mobile salvagers in the area, those survivors are in danger. Abandoned cans will be automatically tractored. Though in the past we have preferred blued cans, it is no longer that case. We have no way of knowing if these passengers will survive or what injuries they may endure in the process. Please be aware of this. Thanks

115.11.29 21:45 Vile Redeemer 7 rescued

Ston advised me before taking this duty, "Do not obsess regarding members of your own people, your own tribe, who abandon their flesh and blood to die in space. Don't let your own heart be consumed in the hate we strive to extinguish."

Today I understood the reason for this advice and the immediate instinct toward anger. When one of my own tribe is responsible for the jettison of 7 people, it is natural to react.

Iofi, my crew chief says, "We calm ourselves then go about the business of rescue." I will try to head the good advice I've been given.

I'm making this report from my Hammock tent strung between two beautiful trees in the camping area at the Paradox Festival going on presently. Soon I suppose I should be social. Its been an incredibly restful time. Its not something I usually do and it was difficult to leave patrols to another pilot. However, my crew chief has sent the patrol report as indicated above and it sounds like all has gone as well as can be. Lives are saved.

I've enjoyed some interesting conversation, especially with Captain Ymladris comparing notes on the training of fromer slaver hounds. It was a helpful conversation. Thank you, Captain Ymladris.

I ate some sort of deep fried something or other. I suffered no mal-effects that I can discern and it did go down alright. However, I refused to breath in smoke.

After I submit this report, I think I'll crawl out of my tent and see what's going on.

When I returned to my tent, I found yet another rescue report from the DSS Mayflower. Apparently, in my absence, the crew has taken to playing "Mobile tractor unit volleyball." In areas with a high concentration of such units, one can keep them busy with a sort of space dance. Generate vouchers, such as wormhole coordinates, et.al. Eject them, abandon them, and watch the MTU's bounce them back and forth. I'm a bit concerned that my crew is not paying attention to their duties while engaged in this practice. I've also heard that others are beginning to engage in the practice, littering the area with blue cans.

I believe a short nap is in order. Something about the leaves in the breeze just invites a nap. Thanks again for the excellent rescue work while I am on this retreat. Be careful crew. Stay alert.

P.S.
Che, I will try to remember "cephalopod rings."

I returned to my hammock tent to receive the reports above. The Mayflower crew has been busy and my friend in Ashokon has also kept up patrols. All is in order it seems.

My spirit is uplifted today after a time of conversation with Ms. Riordan at the Paradox Festival. Some IGS readers may remember her earlier days. But her's is a story of grace and change and how good can compel with greater power than evil. It was a delight to visit with her and DSTON wishes her and Paradox the very best in their efforts to serve the needs of humanity. I have found those who have been in attendance at the Festival to be a delight. It has been a most refreshing time. The settlement will no doubt be a fine place for many to call home. Perhaps I will be allowed to visit again in the future should Paradox permit it. I want to thank the organizers and all those who provided such rich, yet simple hospitality in a marvelous natural setting.

Thank You.

I arrived back at the Kaap center at around 21:00. I left the festival just after the main speeches concluded and the smartfabs were set to laying the foundations of the settlements constructions. The Mayflower was still out on patrol. When she returned, 48 rescued people were on board and disembarked to the center. her crew made a quick turn around while I was prepared for her pod and went aboard. This report is made back on patrol.

I plan to grab a cup of coffee at the Leaning Tower after this patrol. That should help me get back into routine of my duties.

Paradox has done a fine job not just in putting on the festival but also in the establishment of a settlement based on hope, optimism, and hard work. Kudos to all the Paradox capsuleers and staff.
