The Mayflower and her crew were lost tonight while on patrol and rescue operations. It occurred because we thought we could return to a four can scene before the suspect timer had expired. Having done it before successfully, we thought we could get back and do the rescue. We should have waited. The fault is mine. What is more, it is likely those in the other two cans may have perished because of my error.

Here's wishing successful operations to your SAR crews, Momaki. With luck many of your crew will be back at work after suitable medical evaluation.

For the first time since I started the conversation, he looks me dead in the eye. In his gaze are steel jackhammers, quiet vengeance, a hundred thousand orbital bombs frozen in still life.

Thank you good captains for your gracious words. Indeed Lt Cmdr Krik and Iofi my computer tech Chief managed to make it safely out before the ship was destroyed. When we looked at what happened, we discovered that three in the same corp jumped us. We were locked and fired on before we had them lock and could begin jamming. It was over so fast. There is a persistent problem, namely: I am not a very good pilot. I'm getting better, but am not a good pilot by any stretch of the imagination. I told my crew that the most dangerous thing they can do is climb aboard a ship that I pilot. I am grateful for the community of better pilots who have given sound and good advice for improving what we are trying to do.

Today almost the same scenario presented itself, but it was approached more conservatively. The first two death cans were in rescue range of each other so the rescue was made and escape managed through gate activation. This time the timer was expired before we went back out. This time we all decided to look more carefully at was was around. What captured our notice this time was a lingering Huginn in the patrol area. We smelled danger and just waited. The Huginn and pilot left the system. We again chose gate activation as our escape means. This time, there were no problems. We continue to check area station registries for crew that may have escaped and been recovered.

I imagine it looked rather odd if anyone was watching. The two deathcans were just close enough to both be within rescue range, but just. It took many tries to pilot the new Mayflower into just the right position so that both cans were within 2500m and the gate was within immediate activation range. But, we got it and were able to rescue all 41 people right away and make rapid escape. Why the effort for 41 people? To these 41, the effort was most important, and to us as well. We have recovered some of the lost crew from yesterday, but not all. It is likely they are lost. Some of them were experienced Emergancy Medical Technicians who have served selflessly since the beginning. They always saw every rescue be it many or one, as worthy of the utmost effort. We continue to honor that.

The record below may be switched in actual numbers. This is due to the fact that focus was on the rescue and not on which can contained what numbers. Oh well.

I've studied the loss, Ston.

ECM only works as a tank as long as you can actually lock the enemy ships before being alpha'd, and even then it only gives you a chance. I would strongly suggest fitting as much shield as possible on your ship, and a MWD. All you need to do is make it through the gate to be uncatchable.

You must also harden your heart somewhat during these operations. I understand that will be difficult, but you lost your pod as well. In a high-security system like Niarja this should be next to impossible unless the shock of losing your ship caused you to hesitate on hitting the warp button. You may consider this a relatively minor detail, but its not been unknown for pod-losses to cause a consciousness-discontinuity, sometimes of a catastrophic nature.

That is exactly what happened. I was not able to activate ECM because I had no lock. I lost my pod, because of shock and confusion that resulted in hesitation. I was unprepared for what happened. You give sound advice for better preparation in the future. Thank you.

No, the Mr. Momaki on the wall of Shame today is no relation to me. Momaki is a common name.

A while back, I coined the phrase "peacefare" to express my personal disdain for the necessity in training "warfare" skills. As the weeks pass, I am continually confronted by how many of these skills must be trained to increase the safety and effectiveness of our rescue work. The tension is one of the continuing the work while becoming slowly qualified to make it safer.

On a related topic: The current state of war or proxy war or whatever you wish to call it, creates a constant state of unease and distrust that limits us from the betterment of society. It is not that we all have to abandon our cultural values or our societal mores. If we wish to avoid self-destruction, we do need to abandon those beliefs that drive us to destroy others. Eventually, we have to learn to live beside each other if not with each other. We have thrown up our arms and have declared, "War is inevitable." This is conceding to our own annihilation.

People who have always been slaves see life differently. Bear with me for a minute. I have noted bitter arguments between those loyal to the State vs those loyal to the Federation. Strong words and sometimes hatred have characterized these exchanges. Recently, we have begun bringing rescued former slaves to a temp center in State space and will eventually transfer them to a larger facility also within State territory. We had intitial concerns about that how it might sit with the Matriculants. As they have considered crossing back into Empire space before eventually returning to the Republic vs staying in State space and eventually returning to the Republic, they chose to stay in State space. It is safer to travel in the Empire. In our Centers in Republic owned stations, they are far closer to "home" than in the State; yet they chose the later.

There is a psychology at work that perhaps could help us understand a path to peace. Former slaves view the Republic, the State, and the Federation as alike because slavery is illegal there. Simplistic, yes! Psychologically powerful? Yes! No, they do not understand all the racial, ethnic, economic, and cultural intricacies and conflicts, but one defining element makes them want to stay on one side vs the other.

Peace can erupt when we arrive at the conclusion that humanity as a whole shares a commonality greater than the differences that divide us. We just haven't figured out how to communicate it, feel it and elevate it above our war-sustaining hatreds. May that day come sooner rather than later, for the sake of us all.

What's in a name? A great deal... For many of us, our given names are an important part of our identity. Something puzzles me about the penchant that capsuleers have for identifying themselves not with given names but with odd designations such as WENCHY POO or the Ninja Kid. While these "handles" may be clever for a minute or two or maybe for a whole day, I can't imagine having my pilot's license permanently designated with such a name. I'll stick with my name, common as it is.

Following the advice of better pilots than myself, our rescue patrols have gone well. We need continued vigilance and learning. There just isn't room for hubris in this work.

Of the four cans, only one was a deathcan. The rest were an assortment of this and that with no significance as far as we were concerned. One can did contain six people along with a couple mining drones and one or two other items, I forgot what. The six we rescued. They were slaves heading to a mining colony across the border. Where, they did not know. There are many alleged mining colonies manned by slaves across Empire borders. These will not be going to a mining colony. Life has opened up many possibilities for these rescued ones. Where they may choose to go, who knows?

Dearest Ston,

We'd be most honored if you could attend our upcoming Gala event.

*Looks off-Camera*

What's that? We all ready have a Ston corpse?! Oh Joyous day!

*Ahem*

Invitation withdrawn!

Why, you'll already be the guest of honor! We're have to do a little puppet-show with your carefully preserved remains. I know! I'll give guests each a turn making you dance around and courtsey to all the other guests. We'll dress you in something lovely and befitting your honored status.

I've a strong feeling your silent and polite corpse will prove a much more entertaining guest and be wildly more interesting than you could ever be.

Many scanning ships and heavily armed warships of all kinds and they are not passing through...They are looking to attack. But, 42 people are at stake and my crew as well. What to do. We can go to warp very quickly but quick enough? If we are aligned and at speed before making transfer, we will probably escape unharmed. We decided to do it. We were not targetted or shot at and the 42 are safe here back at the center. This time... Two other rescues are also reported below.

I'm worried for pilot Vitalia...

Other ships were checking out this same can but none would rescue those aboard. This is what we observed as we approached a deathcan with an "abandoned" designation. Why bother picking up 481 people and having to interupt profitable journeys by returning to a safe station? Afterall, we are capsuleers. What are 481 lives to us?

To us each of the 481 lives aboard that deathcan represents a universe a value and importance. Each one is worthy of the risk and energy it takes to rescue them. This group is a much larger than normal group for a single rescue. The EMT's did well and all are OK and settled in at the temps center. I do wish to acknowledge at least the courtesy the pilot showed in abandoning the container. It does make our job less dangerous.

As someone else who has been conducting similar operations as you, Mr. Momaki, I would recommend either a tougher or more stealthy ship. If you had a cloak, for example, and were outside of jumping range of a gate you could rescue the people from the jetcan and quickly cloak. Of if you were in a well-tanked shield battleship with cargo expanders in the lows, you could possbily fit a target spectrum breaker to fend off gangs of gankers.

There are a number of possible solutions to avoid being victim of the new Retribution Acts concerning capsuleer aggression. Feel free to mail me if you need advice.

I am also a human, straggling between the present world... and our future. I am a regulator, a coordinator, one who is meant to guide the way.

First, Thank you, Ms. Jormagdnir for your thoughts and advice. I am looking into those possibilities and have begun to see to the proper training necessary.

Two rescue operations are reported below. We are also preparing for transport of temp center residents to larger facilities in Dresi and within the State. Water production for our facilities is now at surplus. Food production will take quite a bit longer. Fortunately, funding for food is small compared to most other capsuleer expenses. Self-sufficiency remains our goal. I have word that Dr. Nalthkh continues to work toward certification for blockade runner. When he achieves this, we can double our efforts at repatriation.

Our Temp Centers are to capacity. People are interesting. The station manager where our temp center is located is highly competant, somewhat imposing and definitely in command of those under him. But, when a group arrives with children, he transforms. It is amazing how someone who is so hard and forceful in one role can transform to soft, gentle, even jolly in another role. Candy and toys for the kids, hugs, smiles, and laughter. None of us knows the full face of a man or a woman. Such is the art of humanity.

When it comes to intellect, not all capsuleers are created equal. I've been following the Theistic debates on some of the other threads and I have appreciated the thought and effort put forth on both sides of the issue. I must admit that I have had to read and re-read to grasp some of the arguments and formulations. I especially appreciate those who have been able to argue without the typical name-calling and character assasination that sometimes happens. Two women of note would be Nicoletta Mithra and Scherezad. I wish I was as sharp as either one of you. But more important, I think you have conducted yourselves respectfully while exercising a lot of rigor in your argumentation.

Two more rescues are reported below and we are happy that 82 more people are safe and out of harms way.

"What if they were your mother and father?" This was question posed to one of my young crewmen on board the DSS Mayflower while on patrol today. It was spoken by Crewchief Krik in response to the young and nervous ensign who questioned risking ship and crew to rescue merely two aged Elite slaves from a deathcan. This particular ensign recently finished his crew training after being rescued some time ago. He came aboard the Mayflower after the first one was destroyed. He replaced one of the computer techs who was lost in the incident. He was justifyably concerned and his question more than expected.

Chief Krik's response was enough to boulster the young man's spirits and calm his nerves.

Now to the interesting part... This young man was separated from his parents in a slaver raid on his farming settlement. He never knew what became of his family and he was an only child. Back at the temp center the reception crew saw to the needs of the 2 former Elite Slaves. They found them in OK condition, ragged from hard labor but healthy otherwise. In the course of the interview they told their story of how slavers raided their mining village and took them as slaves. They had been separated from their teenage son at the time of the raid. They never heard what happened to him. It was at this time that the reception crew had a sort of aha experience. The young ensign was called over to meet those he was unsure we should rescue.

I would love to say that they were his parents, but the odds would be long on that. However, they might as well be. Our young ensign wont let them out of his sight once he heard their story. In a sense a new family has formed to replace one lost. In a perfect world it would have actually been his parents. But this isn't a perfect world, is it? Close enough I say.
