114.12.22 125 Achuran monks repatriated to the Caldari State. 7 of whom volunteered to undergo a special slave identifier transponder removal procedure.

It was a good day. The above log entry marks the first Caldari slaves repatriated home since we opened the Matriculation center in Khanid Prime. With the capable help of an anonymous pilot, we saw the safe transport of these 125 to our repatriation Center in Sirppala. Seven of these have volunteered to undergo a procedure that promises to remove the slave identifier transponder that marks every slave as "slave" in a cargo manifest under customs scans. We are anxious to hear how the procedure works out and we are grateful to the seven who volunteered doing so without assurances regarding risk or success. The organization perfoming the procedure is well reputed and trusted. We await word. Three rescues are logged for yesterday and early today. Once again we have a refugee claiming to be Oura Madusaari. This is odd. She will find her place among the other Oura's in Ation. We hope our counseling staff can help her.

Thank you Gaufres for continuing to rescue the abandoned even now at greater risk to yourself and crew. There are many more traps to beware of since the new Concord vengeance program began. We are very glad you escaped with your lives and rescued 33 people besides. Excellent! People should know that Gaufres has been rescuing people in death cans much longer than the Disciples of Ston and was very much a great inspiration to us at the beginning of this work. We bow in respect to you, sir.

I was listening to sad music as I made this entry and the sadness was compounded by a growing realization of the ever-growing violence, killing, and wholesale death all around us in this Cluster we call New Eden. But even so, there are good people at work, trying to make a positive difference. Not all of them are like me. Some use weapons with great care and restraint to seek to make environments where eventual peace can flourish. Some, like me, renounce all use of violence.

But even with all our combined efforts, sometimes a dark despair descends on me and I wonder, will there ever be peace in New Eden? I go planetside for several days of important business. I know that people in death cans will dies while I'm gone. Some will be saved by others passing through, but many will be left, their time will expire, and they will die. There was once a wise old king, wise albiet broken and sad who said, "So much death. What can men do against such reckless hate?" He was answered by another king, "Ride out with me. Ride out and meet them." Though not with weapons in hand, in my own way I do this. With what I am permitted to bring I join others as they also ride to meet and challenge the reckless hate.

Brothers and sisters let us not become weary in doing good.

These are the first rescues since returning to active patrol from planetside business. Two death cans in close proximity were discovered. In the delicate operation of performing rescues from both cans while assuring safe escape, I regret that I am not 100% sure I paired the right numbers with the right pilot on the wall of shame. It may have been the other way around. The new Concord rules require higher levels of multi-tasking during rescue operations. We are working on the issue of accurate record keeping.

I make this entry not from the temp center but from a station within the Caldari State while I wait out the timer. This happens when multi-rescues are made close to a gate and I have access to type 2 cloaking. It is much safer in those circumstances to acticate the gate if it is in range than to try and warp away.

I am also pleased to report that we were able to confiscate a weapons cache valued at 27.2 million ISK. The operation was almost risk free. Almost means that I agreed to the crews request to carry it out because the chance of escape was very high. And so it was.

The temp center is preparing two groups for transport to Dresi soon. We have made accomodations at our temp center to roughly double our capacity there to compensate for especially busy patrol times. The additional staff are a very welcome and will begin assisting existing staff immediately today.

"A short break is nice, but that's not what we are here to do." This was the comment made by the staff supervisor at the temp center upon the arrival of ten former Elite slaves. Our staff pays particular attention to the needs of these who are called "Elite." The designation is a euphemism for those who because of physical strength are often worked nearly to death. When we rescue them, they are usually on their way out of Empire space to be sold in the other sovereignties. They are often quite frail by then. Tonight they will sleep on clean sheets, eat a warm meal (albeit bland), and receive medical attention where appropriate. Mostly, they will be smiled at a lot and talked to gently and kindly. We try to encourage the staff to just act normally, but sometimes with the smiles are tears. Our Matriculants often do not know what to make of it. I have told them often, "It just makes us all very happy to see that you are alive and safe." We hope the new matriculants will forgive us if sometimes we gush a bit.

Actually, that's a bit of an anachronism. In modern times an "Elite" slave refers to one that has valuable skills and is actually used for things other than brute labor. Butlers, chauffeurs, chefs, etc. The staple of a Holder's personal household staff, basically. The computer networks are a bit slow to keep up on these things, I guess.

They're also considered illegal contraband outside of the Empire, so I have no idea who would be trying to sell them outside of our own borders. Well, actually I do... and illegal slavers caught in Empire space end up in chains themselves when caught. Anyone trying to sell slaves outside of the Empire would fall in that category, as it is a violation of both CONCORD and Imperial law.

Anyway... we contracted another 70 survivors over to you (30 tourists, 10 exotic dancers, 20 militants). In case you were wondering where they came from it is the same as the last batch: Sometimes I do security contracts for various local governments against the pirate factions that plague New Eden. Not being satisfied with merely destroying their ships I make a point to rip apart any of their structures that I find that they may be using - docking bays, storage silos, habitation modules, etc. When I do the inhabitants & former prisoners there have a way of ending up in cargo pods, which I then retrieve. When we get tired of having them sit around our office & eating our food, we send them your way.

It's pretty obvious why pirate trash would keep exotic dancers around. My sympathies go out to them - I thought my own captivity was bad enough.

The tourists - sheesh, I don't know what the heck those people were doing at a pirate station. They all claim that they were prisoners, but you may want to check their pockets before letting them go. I don't trust them.

As for those militants - they all got pulled from the wreckage of two pirate ships that were looking to start trouble and are, technically, simply surviving pirate crew. While I'd personally like nothing more than to slap them into irons & send them to go work in a rock quarry for a few centuries, well like I said, one needs a license & years of training to be a legal slaver, and I have neither. So I guess they got off easy. But just keep that in mind when deciding who gets the smaller ration packs the next time supplies run short.

Thank you Ms. Luftschreck. We will see to the care, education and possible employment of those entrusted to us. The Militants will receive humane treatment and will be protected from the execution they may have been sentenced to if delivered to opposing sovereignties.

As for Elite Slaves, I think we are dealing with homonyms. It would be reasonable to assume that within the Empire "Elite" would be a different designation than the Customs manifest registration of Elite Slaves. I am sure that there are those within the Empire who view "Elite" as you do; as intellectually or technically skilled. We are not referring to those but rather to the highlighted designation above; to those subjected to rigorous physical labor.

The rescues below demonstrate the unpredictable nature of our work. We were on patrol with the fast and nimble DSS Generosity when we came across a field of death cans. The first one was blued and labeled "Free Slaves." 87 people were aboard, way too many for the Generosity to handle. Since there were other cans in the vicinity, we went back for the Mayflower and immediately returned to conduct the rescues. When we came back, we discovered that 80 of the 87 had been taken or rescued. We rescued the remaining seven and two of the remaining yellow cans. 15 minutes later, we made the last rescue of a single person alone in a death can.

As is typical since the new Concord regulations took effect, we often jump into Caldari space when working in such close proximity to the gate. We have found that there is a psychology at work among those we rescue in these circumstances. While the former slaves are Matari, they do not wish to return to our centers in Empire space even though it would be safer to do so. Once out of the empire, they often request to go directly to our Sirppala center and begin their new lives from there. That is in fact what we are preparing to do even as I make this entry.

DSTON is pleased to announce the christening of the DSS Safe Harbor and that she has accomplished her first rescue. Ship and crew performed with well timed excellence. We hope that the new equipment will add versatility to our patrol fleet. The ship is equipped with added ECM capabilities and better inherent durability should she come under fire. She is not yet fully equipped but already capable of being used in patrol and rescue operations.

It all goes back to the decision to sell the Interbus Shuttle rather than keep it as a toy. That one sale has enabled DSTON to upgrade equipment and skills to a greater level and also to upgrade our planet-based production facilities.

We have taken on additional crew recently trained at one of our repatriation centers at a Pator Tech station. They are being orientated by some of our more senior crew members. Crew and trainees did an excellent job today under chaotic circumstances. Patrol areas were very busy and there was a great deal of traffic, police actions, fireworks, and other distractions.

While crew functioned at peek levels, I began to fatigue. I can usually tell, when I begin to feel strong emotion that interferes with my ability to react calmly. Seeing 547 people dumped off to die does that too me at the end of long day. It is at these times, that I lean on my exceptional crew. The men and women of the DSS Generosity, DSS Mayflower and the new DSS Safe Haven were all involved in today's rescues. Switchoffs between crews has gone well with ship to temp center communication handled by the com officer on duty. The last rescue involved a container transfer and ship switch from the Safe Harbor to the Mayflower. It went without a hitch. I was surprised that there were no targeting attempts given the number of warships camping in the patrol area.

We have also formed another temp center staff due to increased numbers that find themselves on the State side after a rescue. The new temp center will be a half-way point to our Repatriation center in Sirppala. The 574 in the last rescue are there now. We made the decision to do this so that newly rescued people would have the opportunity to wisely make a decision of where they want to be repatriated.

Klaxons in the on-duty crew quarters sound when the call is given to ready a ship for a rescue operation. I once asked to hear the sound of these alerts to get an idea of the life of my crews. I think of that sound often now when I put in a call. Today, I was returning from transporting slavers to our Yulai facility. I was piloting a frigate and so was not prepared for rescue work. However, I did fly through a patrol area and a can showed on scanners. I put through the call to prepare the Mayflower. We rotate on ship prep crews that go 12 on, 12 off. These are in addition to the ready crews that rotate in alert quarters accessible to the hangar by high speed mag car. When the klaxon sounds, the crew is ready and in the cars in seconds and on board in about a minute.

Capsule transfer from ship to ship is very fast so docking and undocking is nearly seamless. We took the Mayflower out to the site I had marked where I had earlier detected the can. As we made out way to the site, we were targetted and locked even before we were in range to make a rescue. This is nothing unusual; it has been an occurrence frequently in patrol work. Now, however with the new rules, the moment we attempt a rescue we come under fire. Fortunately, we were in very close proximity to the gate. We are able to rescue and activate the gate almost simultaneously. With type 2 cloak, we then can make it into station almost unseen, as long as we do not panic. Unfortunately, I'm good at panic. Fortunately, my crews are calm and experienced. The 23 people aboard deathcan were safely evacuated to Caldari space.

One earlier rescue and one later rescue are also reported below.

I wait in our temp center in State space while the suspect timer slow ticks down. 29 former slaves and 3 slavers are settling in and trying to figure out what just happened. They were all within two hours of death. Now they are alive, but none of them know what is going to happen next. There is a common look of bewilderment on the faces of many that we rescue. It is the look that asks, "What is happening?" Hopefully, in an hour or so, that look will dissipate as the staff here explains the situation, offers food, clothing, medicine, and perhaps most importantly, simple conversation.

Again, well done crew of the Mayflower on a dual deathcan rescue and efficient escape. No lock, no fire taken.

These rescue reports bridge 114 and 115. 17 minutes into the new year a rescue of 10 people was performed. To usher in the new year doing our work; that is a good way to celebrate. We celebrate 10 people who will live in to this new year.

The institution of slavery is a deep depravity entrenched in the hearts and minds of those embroiled in it. Generations of of culture have been built around its justification insulating hearts with a thick, calloused layer of fine sounding and well-practiced verbiage extolling this wickedness as if it were holy. It is usually the deepest spiritual darkness that has most deeply held religious justification. Words are insufficient to the task of arguing against it. Deeds must suffice.

Kindness begets kindness. This can be true not just with those we like or love or with whom we share some affinity, but with those we consider enemies as well. There is in this forum a propensity to answer quickly and harshly. I've done it and most others have as well. I think perhaps we need to step back and not be so quick to let the verbal hammer fall. Crushing sarcasm, biting wit, verbal belittlement, etc; do we really want to be known for such?

One of the areas of training that we give our center staff is in the skill of gentle speech. Those we rescue are often very frightened and confused. Our ship crews and center staff learn a careful and delicate balance of firmness in life-saving instruction and gentleness in tone and manner. When done correctly, people calm themselves out of panic states and function in a more healthy productive way.

There will always be those who want to hurt others verbally, but often, we strike out verbally because someone has done the same to us. There has to be a first person who decides not to strike back in kind. Who has the control of will to be that person? Here is a challenge for you and for me. The next time someone bashes you verbally, test your ability to control yourself and refuse to answer in kind. I'm guessing in the long run, you will get a lot further.

When we think of consequence, we often think in the short term, that is, we ponder only the impact on our own lives or that of one or two generations from us. But our actions can have impact far beyond the short term or even what we think is the long term but minute in the scale of the eons.

Hatred is tenacious, and we can certainly see that all around us. But few of us understand just how tenacious it really is. When a nation or people commits atrocity against another nation or people, the bitterness doesn't just go away with a generation or two. Often it lingers for long periods of time, watching for weakness in the other and waiting for the opportunity to make the revenge far worse than perhaps the original atrocity.

The bottom line is that the legacy of war often is your own culture's annihilation. The legacy of oppression is the oppression, killing, enslavement and defeat of your posterity sooner or later. The legacy of greed, selfishness, and narcissism is the eventual decay and fading away of your own self-important cultural or religious centrism. To whom does this apply? To all of us; each and every nation, religion, culture.

We ought not wait for the next generation to take corrective measures when it is in each of our hands to do what can lead to mutual peace and understanding right now. Now is the time.

Something I hardly remember to do anymore: To look at the race, nation, of the people on the wall of shame. I used to pause each and every time a Matari tribes-person dumped some of his own brothers and sister in space to die. But now, I hardly take note. But today, I remembered to look for some reason. The man listed in the Wall of Shame below is Brutor and some of his victims share his tribal heritage. I know that those in the war trades often harden to death and harden toward others, but we too can experience a form of hardening. I renew today my sense of shock at what I see and record in these pages. I do not wish to become "used to" human depravity.

There is often cause and occasion for laughter in our temp center. However, on patrol, we seldom laugh. That time is characterized by paying attention to procedure and staying alert for traps and dangers. Today, we came upon a death can. We discovered that is was registered to a pilot name TheMeanGuy. We put our grim faces and prepared for a rescue. How many would there be? We were all certain that there would be people in need on board that can. Well there wasn't. There was one stasis web module and that's it. There was a collective exhale followed by laughter. The mean guy may be mean indeed, but no on this account.

There were other rescues to report and these are listed below.

I asked the question, "coming this close to death; does it change your view of risk? How do you see risk now;, especially deadly peril? For what or whom are you willing to risk your life for now, after this experience?" I asked this of a group of Matriculants in the temp center last night at the evening meal. To my delight, there were no answers. There was silence and one answer only that rang out, "One only answers that when the moment demands and answer."

Planning for risks is part of what we do every day, but there is something about the moment when risk is demanded that is unique. We can try hard to anticipate and make that anticipation a sort of "school of peril," but we learn only so much until we actually face it. I am convinced that we all surprise ourselves a bit when that time comes.

The loving-slave has no pleasure like that of serving his master. this is his joy, and his very "crown of rejoicing."

The loving-slave is altogether at his master's service. He is all eyes for his master. He watches. He is all ears for his master. He listens. His mind is willing. His hands are ready.

His feet are swift to sit at the master's feet and look into his loved face, to listen to his voice and catch his words; to run on his errands, to do his bidding, to share his privations and sorrows, to watch at his door, to guard his honour, to praise his name, to defend his person, to seek and promote his interests, and, if needs be, to die for his dear sake; this is the joy of the loving slave, and this he counts his perfect freedom.

Computer maintenance technicians are the heart and soul of our ship crews. They put in more work on patrol and afterwards in maintenance than anyone else we hire. Right now, all of our CMT's are people we have rescued at one time or another. I asked one recently, "How long do you see yourself doing this particular work? Do you want to study to do other things or stay at this a while?" Her answer was interesting. She began by saying, "It is hard to explain. Slavery drained life from my soul. Rescuing slaves brings it back. When I feel that the life is back in full measure, I'll move on to other things." I think she captured what many on our crews, maintenance staff, and center staff feel.

I do not understand those who salivate for violence, who sit and wait for oportunities to kill just so that they may kill. In our patrol zone today, there were multiple traps set, but not for us. These were set for the greedy. In one can was over a billion ISK worth of Nox; in another, a cache of weapons. Both owners sat close by. When we checked the first can, we were locked but no fire came upon us. Finally, there was a third can, a death can. Aboard 212 people. As fortune would have it, the can was practically on a gate so we were able to rescue and escape unscathed. These we have brought to our State side facility for now.

We have put out the warning many times: Do not pay fare to a capsuleer pilot for transport anywhere. Many will dump you to make room for expensive loot. They do not value your life nor care about your business unless it profits them. Now not all are like this, but the wary baseliner, would be passenger, should assume that all are this way. Take the Interbus. Pay more if you have to.
