This is a followup from last night's rescue of militants near a border crossing. The pilot was contacted and asked about it with the following response with my second request underneath.

To: USS Hauler,

Dear Mr. Hauler,
My name is Ston Momaki of the Disciples of Ston. On routine patrols, we rescued 40 militants and 1 slaver hound from a jet can registered in your name. We are wondering the reason that they were there. Jettisoned? Survived and attack? If you could please give us your account of the event, we would appreciate it. Thanks? We would also like the identity of the militants so we know what to do with them.

(2nd request)

This leaves us with few answers other than that they were jettisoned on purpose and that the pilot did not know anything about the militants. We have found this group of militants to be very combative and aggressive, so it has been difficult to find out anything about them. If anyone has any information about recent movement of NGO militants, please let us know. We are not sure what to do with this group. They seem to resent that they were rescued. This is strange and we have not encountered this before. We are hoping that they will tell us who they are and where they were going.

Taking over patrol duties from Ston, I came upon a death can with 72 souls aboard. I have begun to feel a deep urge to understand the inner workings of people who do this. What possesses the spirit of a man or woman that he or she would dump living humans like trash to waste away in space? I have decided to take the time and try to get some respnses from the pilots we record on the wall of shame. I simply asking the question, "Why did you do this?"

72 people are glad to be alive tonight. 72 people have a life to look forward to tonight.

A while back we described the transport of 200 new students who had just completed their voluval to our educational facilities in Korama. As of late we have decided to make these reports after the fact rather than before. This is for security reasons to avoid detection of our travel movements when transporting Matriculants. What we didn't say, is that the Voluval involving a total of 300 young men and women also included 100 young people whose marks indicated a different destiny in more dangerous and wild places. This morning I am glad to report that we competed the transport of 100 Matriculants to our new educational facilities in Egbinger. 25 are beginning studies in our academic branch there while the 75 remaining are beginning vocational training. We also delivered needed medical supplies and food stock.

The journey was a tense one for me. The last time I made that journey, I ran into real problems with gate camps. We took the "Redemption" on this journey. This ship is a Minmatar blockade runner. When transporting passengers now, we are cloaking from start to finish even when we do not need to. Extra precautions are being taken to protect our Matriculants. We also were carrying a Khumaak for the new facility lobby. This will be in our development office above the receptionist's desk.

Kudos to my crew, and in particular, my chief computer engineer. In spite of automation, it is still necessary to manually activate cloak at the precise moment between coming out of gate cloak and entering warp to the next gate. One never notices how many customs ships are crowded around gates until you have something illegal to transport. Also, depending on the direction of travel, approaching gates and timing gate activation at the instant of decloak is a hairy process. At one gate, we came within meters of colliding with a Customs Commissioner. We were close enough to see people through their portholes. They never knew we were there, but it was tense. Crew you did upstanding work on this trip. Thanks.

Congratulations to the 100 young people whose Voluval has directed them to Egbinger and to new horizons to fulfill destinies partly known and partly unknown. Blessings on your life journeys.

We are no closer to discovering the identity of the Militants we rescued the other day. They have not let us know who they are and they continue an aggressive and defiant posture whenever we ask. They are being well cared for in temporary holding. We are considering taking them to our detention facility in Korama where we have security trained for the purpose. We would like to ask the IGS community about militant movements in the area where we rescuedthem, but we cannot compromise the security of our M-Centers, especially now. We have a hunch who they might be and our medical team is working on determining their race of origin. Once we know who they are not, we can come closer to figuring our who they are.

EALUR FOUND AMONG THOSE RESCUED

It was toward the very end of my patrol shift when I discovered the death can with 16 people on board. As my crew took them in and the medical crew began to see to their needs, they made a remarkable discovery. There were four people, two men and two women, who were very different looking than the rest of the passengers. Having dark and swarthy complexions and very stout muscular bodies, they were first mistaken for Brutor tribes-people. What stood out was their stature. They were very short, not midget or dwarf sized but shorter than any Brutor we have ever encountered. In fact, they are shorter than any Minmatar we have ever encountered.

So we asked them. “We are Ealur,” they responded. Needless to say, we were taken aback. Never before have we had the privilege of meeting such a remarkable people. Most of us only vaguely recall ever hearing the word”Ealur” let alone understanding who these people are. We set our historical scholars to work and the Center Elders set a meal before our guests and sat down to get their story.

The Ealur are the forgotten tragedy of slavery. A peaceful, non-aggressive people, they were conquered and enslaved with only one Amarrian casualty due to resistance. They are an intelligent, non-violent people who had embraced simplicity and shunned technology, choosing instead to live in harmony with their peaceful, bountiful planet. Their Amarrian slave holders saw their lack of aggressiveness as sin and brutally worked them, killing millions and almost wiping them out of existence. Of all people I have ever met, the Ealur deserve to live in the self-determined peace and harmony of their history, yet they have been denied this. Hardly anyone has ever spoken for these delightful people in their tragic history of slavery to the Amarr.

Now to the story of the four who were rescued. They were sold by an Amarrian holder to a Caldarian industrialist to become “novelty slaves.” The pilot hired to transport them to Jita along with 12 other former slaves, bailed at the border and decided to leave them for dead. Apprentl, they were intended as breading stock for a new slavery business venture featuring “Ealur curio slaves.” These men and women are people of peaceful dignity. It burns my soul to see people treated in such a way. Little exists in the way of their original tribal culture on Ealur VI which is in Amarrian territory. In spite of this, I have invited Gladius, Feanor, Verin and the two Ealur couples to accompany me on a journey to Ealur VI to at least view their former home world from space.

It has been next to impossible for this race to establish a free culture anywhere since they are almost entirely enslaved. Perhaps these four can make a beginning. Just because a people are non-violent; just because a people are quiet; just because a people are peaceful, doesn’t mean they don’t deserve to be free. The slavery of the Minmatar has eclipsed the plight of the Ealur almost to utter silence. It is time to bring the plight of the Ealur to the attention of all capsuleers who love and defend freedom.

THE TRIP TO EALUR VI

Our trip to Ealur was more delightful than words can describe. The eight of us: Galdius, Feanor, Verin, Bowman and May Cotton, Halfred and Bell Greenhand, and myself, enjoyed the journey and the time spent surveying Ealur VI. Watching the Ealur react to seeing their planet of origin was moving and deeply emotional. Tears were shed by all. At times like this, I hate being stuck in my pod.

The planet is a sight to behold. It has a very short year and a short day. One can physically observe the speed of rotation as it is quite rapid relative to many habitable planets. The land masses are proportionally large compared to the seas. In fact, the oceans are surrounded by land instead of the land surrounded by oceans. The climate is beautiful, temperate and pleasant. The vegetation is lush and life of all kinds is abundant. To our surprise, capsuleers have done very little exploitation of the planet. There are a few colonies, but not many.

We contacted the only station in the system to communicate our presence and what we were doing. We were glad to hear that the one and only station in the system is Gallente (Aliastra Corp). They welcomed us with open arms. Here is where it gets interesting. The folks at Aliastra were very taken with the Ealur. The Cottons and the Greenhands conducted themselves in the most urbane manner. They literally captivated the hearts of the management of the Aliastra station. The station requested to host the two Ealur couples for as long as they wished to stay in their station. The Cottons and Greenhands agreed to stay on there for the time being. This trip turned out better than we could have possibly planned. It seems quite appropriate since the Gallente have been historically, the only ones who have ever shown interest in the Ealur and their plight under the oppression of slavery.

Station management indicated that they would try to arrange a visit planetside on Ealur VI for their guests during their stay. We hope very much that this happens. The Cottons and Greenhands have also indicated that they are willing to receive limited visitors and guests at the station. Aliastra will handle all security and safety issues during their stay.

The four of us returned to Center #1 with a sense that the work we do is worthwhile, worth the risks and is the right thing to do.

Early today, upon relieving Ston of Patrol duty and taking my own turn, I happened upon a death can containing 49 living, breathing people on board. My crew is learning some very effective, gentle, reassuring, etc. ways of helping people who are frightened, cold, sick and sometimes near death in these death cans. This rescue was not too bad, because the can had not been jettisoned too long before I found it. There was still ample oxygen available and the temperature had not dropped too far nor the radiation level risen too far. This isn't always the case.

Ston, I wish I could have gone with you to Ealur. I will need to visit our new friends at the Aliastra station there. It sounds as if there is much we can learn from he ways of these people.

This rescue operation almost ended in disaster. Usually, when former slaves are rescued, there is general order and understanding of what is happening. This mixture of people created several moments of chaos aboard the ship. During that time, one of my crew members was attacked by a slaver with a small weapon. Other crew members quickly subdued the man and confiscated the device. There were a few minutes of general pandemonium until the crew convinced everyone that it was a rescue operation and that everyone would be just fine. Back at Center #3, things settled down. I am back on patrol, and the Center administration is trying to sort things out. The confiscated device is being sent to Center #1 where we have electronics experts to figure out what it is. I have contacted the pilot responsible for the death can to try an get information on just why this odd combination of people ended up dumped in space. I have my hunches, but I would like to hear what she has to say.

I just received the following message from Ston regarding the device that was confiscated from the slaver during today's rescue.

Inflicter
From: Ston Momaki

To: Manwe Todako,

Dear Manwe,
I just received the following memo from Dr. Sakti regarding his analysis of the weapon your crew confiscated.

memo: Inflicter Device
To: Ston Momaki
From: Dr. Sakti

Mr. Momaki,

The device brought into my lab is a highly midified common medical device for nerve stimulation. The common device is used to stimulate wound areas to increase blood flow and promote scarless healing.

This modified device contains a programed neural scanner that specifically identified pain recepters. The nerve stimulator is highly amplified. The device in effect scans for pain receptors, stimulates them and amplifies the signal that the brain receives. The result is a highly enhanced sensation of pain.

When activiated, the device produces a split second strong burst followed by a lesser sustained stimulation. The result would be extrordinary pain followed by severe pain.

Attached is an image of the device with my thumb and forfinger for scale. The dimensions are approximately 10 centimeters by 2 centimeters. There is an activation switch and indicator light. The device is placed anywhere on the body and the pain sensation will occur at the location of activation.

encl. (Image of Inflicter)
Dr. Sakti

The slaver who had the device called it simply, "an inflicter." He said they are commonly used by some holders and by many slave traders. In his words, "The inflicter produces unforgettable pain and is a proficient control device while causing no tissue damage." Dr. Sakti said that the device would be disassembled for further analysis.

This is a disturbing discovery.

Ston

Center #3 Elders report that the crew member is OK but shaken. He said that the first burst was "beyond pain." He had never felt anything so physically terrible before. We only hope that such a device is not in common use in the Empire.

I have two rescues to report, one of which contained non-slave passengers again. Two such occurrences so close together is somewhat rare. We are trying to get information from the pilots involved but have unsuccessful so far. The First rescue was of 87 former slaves. The second is listed below. We are interviewing those rescued to see if there is any connection between them or if they were all just paying passage with the pilot who dumped them. We are now more careful to check slavers for the inflicter device.

It has been a busy shift and 10 more people have just been rescued. These men are what are referred to as "elite slaves." They have been worked extremely hard. When transported, they are allowed on one cubic meter per person. This treatment is unacceptable. Slavery is such a waste of humanity. I am working double shifts until Manwe returns. During that time, I am trying to keep up on my IGS reports as it may be that we will not be reporting for a while if the deal goes through.

Notes
1/14
Deal was struck with Silas Vitalia on 1/14 at 20:55 hours. 400,000 slaves transferred now former slaves. IGS postings cease until 1/28 21:00 hours. Whatever else can be said of this woman, her motives, her beliefs; we say, “Thank you on behalf of 400,000 former slaves who are now free.” We don’t know if you ever intended this, but you are heroine to us and to these.

Weeks ago we purchased a Mammoth. We have wanted to outfit a vessel capable of transporting larger numbers of passengers and to fit it just for that puspose. Stripping 30% of its armor, adding observation decks, converting cargo to passenger births, restaurants, recreation areas, worship facilities, medical decks, meeting areas, bars and lounges, etc, we have created a sort of space liner. We chose the Mammoth for its ten break-away habitable segments for survival in case of attack. The engineering segment in the far stern can be separated and cleared before any explosion. Our designers have fitted this vessel with the maximum amount of open observation and large, spacious areas most of which are located in the front one third of the bow. We are Christening the Vessel "Freedom Liner." Even with expanded passenger space, we will need many, many trips to complete the transportation. Our goals is to make this trip something the newly freed men, women, boys, girls and families look forward to. Our route will be a safe one and the cruises we make, leisurely.

Received temporary facility use from Khanid Transport CEO, Edooba Agh. Being Ni-Kunni, he was a bit more amiable than if we would had to have dealt with the Khanid. Ni-Kunni seem to be just a bit more down to earth than some under the Amarr umbrella. We appreciate his flexibility at this time.

The Cottons and the Greenhands have worked their magic with the folks at Aliastra. Edaine, also having joined Aliastra since departing DSTON, has been working with them to arrange the conversion of a large portion of the facility in Ealur for our use as the largest Matriculation Center in our history. The Cottons and the Greenhands will administrate this Center with the help of the good folks at Aliastra.

Many passengers will also become part of our already established Centers due to the generous help of our Corporate sponsor. That location and corporation shall remain unnamed for security reasons and to protect those who have helped us so much. Few can appreciate how many people have taken such risks.

I have been in contact with Edaine Numenor and though he is no longer a part of DSTON and left the corporation before our agreement with Vitalia was made, he has agreed to the silence as if he were still a member of DSTON. We appreciate his solidarity with us during this time.

I received word today 1/14 that all operations of M-Center #2 have been transferred from Edaine Numenor to Ston Momaki per our agreement. No changes will be felt as the Elders run the day to day affairs of the Center. We will miss Edaine's regular patrols, though.

The first several thousand Matriculants who arrive at Ealur will be those with skills and expertise to set up and prepare community infrastructure for the thousands more who will arrive later. Aliastra is bringing in additional station personal to help with the project. The Cottons and Greenhands are overseeing the design and services of the new community. Aliastra is providing medical staff and equipment for the Center population. The station is large enough to handle many times more population than we are bringing. In some ways, this population will be a lighter burden than the typical Gallente civilian population. Eventually, there will be a training and employment service established by Aliastra for those who want to go that direction. We have offers from several others to assist as well.

Windows; we take them for granted. Many of the freed slaves have extensive space travel experience. You would be surprised how many of them who do have never look out a spacecraft window. They have spent their service in engine rooms or other less pleasant areas on board ships and never looked out at the heavens they were traveling through. Many have not even looked out a station window to see the ships coming and going and the moons and planet they orbit. The Freedom Liner has many windows, observation decks, windowed restaurants and bars, windowed meditation rooms, etc. Passengers have gasped and expressed sounds similar to crowds watching fireworks as were zip past planets and suns at warp. We orbited the Aliastra station before docking on the first journey so the passengers could see this mammoth beauty. The station has three massive units with a smaller fourth unit all connected with spoke-like structures. We sent a camera drone far out so the passengers could see the scale of the station compared to the Freedom Liner. Impressive, even to us who have seen it again and again. This is to say nothing of the view of Khanid Prime V against the nebula; spectacular!

1/15
Brought more passengers to Center #3. Ston had asked a favor while I was in the area. He had “acquired” certain pharmaceuticals that our research chemists have been looking to obtain. He asked that I use one of our cloaked vessels to retrieve it from one of our secure containers as these particular ‘medicines” are illegal. Our Medical Chemists are looking for a way to mute a combination of Frentix and Blue pill for patients in extreme, traumatic pain. These experimental samples will help this research along tremendously.

Our passengers have noted the vast difference between the station in Khanid Prime and the destination in Ealur. The Aliastra station in Ealur is much larger and open. The station seems to be overkill for a system that has very little commercial traffic as far as we can tell. We are glad for it though, for it is uniquely suited for this situation and vastly under populated. Some may wonder why we are so open about the location of the Ealur station and so guarded about the location of our other centers. It really has to do with our desire to protect the identity of those who have assisted us in the freeing of slaves. Many have taken a great personal risk in the case of our first four centers. Aliastra sees little risk in this enterprise even though they are in Amarr space. Actually, it is a diplomatic win for all involved. Aliastra upholds Gallentean values against slavery while Amarr cannot be accused of un-humanitarian action. This cooperation is politically smart on both sides. No one has to compromise what is expected of them.

I noted on this last trip that there were only 3 total capsuleer pilots in Ealur and I was one of them. This is a quiet system. At the close of the day, we were about 1/8 of the way through transporting 400000 freed former slaves at just 0ver 50,000. I wait to hear from Ta Pang to see if Center #4 has space for 5,000 new residents.

1/17

I have been busy transporting and that is about it. I monitor the Summit com channel quite often when I am flying, but I seldom comment on what is happening there. I have been somewhat disappointed in the blasé sort of discussions lately. They are more about shoe shopping and home decoration than serious matters. In fact, real seriousness is almost not tolerated. Unless you have some sexual joke, profanity or the latest social nonsense, you are threatened with censorship. I witnessed an argument between two pilots each convinced that the other was a heretic and saying so. One of the channel monitors broke in with a hail of profanity and insults and had the nerve and hypocrisy of accusing the two “religious” zealots of inappropriate and offensive language. While I thought both the pilots arguing were wrong in substance, the com moderator was the real violator. Basically she said, “Stop your F---ing arguing so we can get back to talking about sex, parties and shopping.” Is that what the Summit is becoming?

We are about ¼ done transporting the new Matriculants to their new locations. Ta Pang indicates that after he consults with Center #4 Elders, he will probably be able to take on several thousand new residents.

1/18
Little to report today other than that the station management and Corporate administration of Khanid Transport has been both patient and great to work with. As long as they see me transporting the freed slaves with as much capacity as I can, they are continuing to help those who remain at the station until it is their turn. Again, special thanks to Edooba Agh for his assistance in this matter. We appreciate both the hospitality of his corporation and his willingness to assist us without considering us the enemy.

1/19
“Welcome 5650 and Domu Fahlih!” This is a little game we have started on each trip. I am able to accommodate 5651 passengers aboard the Freedom Liner on each trip to Ealur. I can’t very well learn 400,000 names, but I can identify one person on each trip to make the whole experience more personal. Before each journey, the community picks one little boy or girl to be the “special representative” of the whole passenger list for that trip. After boarding, I come onto the com and announce, “Welcome onboard 5650 passengers and_______.” None of the boys or girls know ahead of time who is chosen to be called out by name. The reactions are great and everyone has fun with it. Hope is rising and can be felt in the air.

1/20
Ealur was quiet today; only one other pilot in system right now. We received heartening news from Edaine Numenor, but I will let him share that news in his time and in his way. I actually had a conversation with the illusive Edaine today on the Summit. Thanks Edaine.

Last night, I mocked a young Amarrian slave holder on the Summit com channel. That was wrong and I should not have done it. No excuse, but a reason: The amount of suffering we see on a daily basis wears on you. It is hard to tolerate the naiveté of a young Amarrian holder and the deception that somehow they are little saviors sent by God. I guess I should apologize. We are about ½ done with the transport.

22-1/25 Mostly transport duties occupying my time. I made the mistake of thinking that there was intelligent life on the Summit Com Channel, instead I found only arrogant hubris. Expecting to find a minimum of intellectually potty trained people, I found only those who still need to clean the crap out of their intellectual diapers.

The discussion began with an attempt to free the word “supernatural” from the bonds of religion which have hijacked the word for millennia. My attempt to do so was met with ridicule. If anyone of any level of intelligence ever reads this, I hope you will appreciate my small attempt to explain what I had hoped to accomplish. It is sad that capsuleers generally are so very afraid of the humility that science requires of us, so much so that when faced with the unknown, they cry, “metaphysics, philosophy, theology…” No, science only flourishes when the unknown is embraced. What else drives science forward?

Several thousand years ago, it was discovered that the full blown relativistic theory of gravity and a fully developed quantum mechanics, point particle theory were unable to be unified as they stood. String theory was developed, augmenting the standard point particle theories that had dominated physics. It did a fair job of reconciling the two but to this day, no one knows if this “quantum gravitational string theory” is really “the” theory that describes reality in our universe. In spite of that, we daily depend on technologies that assume the existence of the unkown, including string particles (in particular, harmonic gravitons) and the multiple dimensions that String and M- mathematical theories demand.

Second point: We commonly accept that the universe is expanding and that this expansion is accelerating. The matter in this universe is not little bits and pieces flying apart as it were, but rather in strands or webs held together by gravity as they spread out. Two problems: 1. There is not enough energy in the universe to account for its accelerated expansion. 2. There is not enough matter/mass in the universe to account for the web like structure that is evident. Scientists, not theologians, not philosophers have postulated to things to account for this. 1. Dark energy: this “exists” to fuel the accelerating expansion of the universe. 2. Dark matter: this “exist’ to bind the matter of the universe together in its web-like structure.

Here is the amazing thing; the technologies that capsuleers use every day were developed using the assumption that these “dark” things really exist. In other words, we daily depend on the unknown for what we routinely use. Scientist use the word “dark” because they cannot observe or even detect either dark energy or dark matter, only the effect they have on what can be observed or detected. Right now these things are, practically speaking, outside of nature but not reality necessarily. They do not adhere to the laws of nature as they been defined and accepted. In fact, string theory postulates the possibility of alternate “natures.”

Finally, when space-time becomes infinitely curved as it does in a singularity and space itself curves inward faster than the speed of light, the laws of physics are suspended and both time and space as we know it cease to exist at that point. Scientists who are rather humbled by this reality have no problem acknowledging this “outside of nature” reality. However, try talking about it on The Summit and they will call you an idiot. The saddest part is that this sort of arrogant hubris comes from some that should know better.

1/26
This morning, I passed that sort of “wall.” The population left in Khanid Prime has dropped below 100,000. We are now past ¾ done with the transport. The Khanid station will become increasingly lonely and the Ealur station increasingly bustling. As it should be.

I have instituted a daily science quiz on the Summit just for fun. Today’s question was,”What do you call an object that is smaller than its Schwarzchild radius?” Each daily question will have something to do with technology or experiences common to capsuleers. Answer? A black hole of course. Questions will be repeated two or three times daily if I am around. Discussion today was fun.

1/27
It was recommended to me by one of the moderators of the Summit to ask Cardinal Graelyn before proceeding with the Quiz. He affirmed the plan and also suggested that I provide a “fact of the day” to go along with the science quiz. This I am happy to do.

I had a most delightful discussion after this morning’s quiz question with a very intelligent pilot. Today’s question was; “Black holes are black because what is collapsing faster than the speed of light?” I was immediately corrected by the always eminent supreme professor, doctor of Sansha wizardry, that collapse was a misleading term. It is frequently used within the Physics community, but there are those who love to nitpick. So let me rephrase, Black holes are black because what is curving inward toward the center of mass faster than the speed of light? Answer? Space-Time.

The fact of the day was, The smallest measurable unit in physics is the Planck unit and it measure, 1.616199(97)×10−35 meters.

We are beginning to see light at the end of the long tunnel of transporting 400,000 former slaves from Khanid Prime to Ealur. Bowman and May Cotton, and Halfred and Bell Greenhand along with the Aliastra people have been fantastic. Kudos also to Khanid transport for not once pressuring us regarding our continued presence on their station. We are grateful.

At the Aliastra station, the main passenger docking port has two huge observation hab modules at the threshold of the entrance. They are shaped like a disk and offer a 360 degree view of ships coming and going from the station. This system has so little ship traffic, that it is a rare sight to see a ship coming into port. The Freedom liner has been the only regular ship to come and go. The children, in particular love to watch her as she comes in to her birth in the station. It is something I never get to see as I am piloting her both coming and going. Today I dispatched a camera drone to follow me out as I left for Khanid Prime. I can see the fascination these children have. I told them to study hard and work hard and set their goals high. They, too, one day may pilot some great ship.

I have not yet finished the task of transporting all the freed slaves from Khanid Prime to Ealur. I hope this will be completed soon.

The last two weeks culminated in the final journey from Khanid Prime to Ealur with the 3100 last passengers to make their way to the new Center. I was able to walk among the embarkation ramps as the passengers board family by family. The administration of this Khanid station is to be commended for their patientce with the process. The Cottons and Green hands have prepared an impressive facility in Ealur. I have missed rescue ops, but Ston has kept that work going well.

Something else occurred on the way to Ealur that shows the unpredictable nature of our work. A pilot by the name of Zsaryna Adrelana contacted me mid journey and the conversation that ensued places the Disciples of Ston in yet another one of those controversial yet critical situations where are values are tested. This Ni-Kunni pilot began the conversation by speaking of a group of scientist in her employ that wished to inquire about working for our organization. She also had a group of captured militants that she wanted to hand over to us and in addition 20 freed slaves. We are used to these kinds of interactions, but what happened next was the most unusual request we have ever received.

She spoke of an adolescent slave that she had purchased from less than an ideal situation. The Matari girl had come to grow attached and love this Holder pilot. While the full story is not yet known, I can only assume that Ms. Adrelana had taught her something of her Matari heritage. The girl had asked her master if she could undergo the voluval. I replied that I was no expert and that she should contact a Shaman to see if one could undergo the rite while still a slave. That avenue had already been explored to no avail. She invited me to meet the girl and speak with her. What followed is not something we have ever done.

Over a meal, I got to know "Amy" a little. I asked her a lot of questions and we talked about the voluval and about what being a slave was like for her. She wanted the voluval, but she didn't want to leave her master, Ms. Adrelana. What was I to say? I asked for their trust. I would take the girl to my tribal elders and ask them to perform the ritual for her. I told Ms. Adrelana that after the voluval, returning to her or remaining free would be her choice and she would be under no compulsion to return to her master. Amy agreed, Ms. Adrelana agreed. The girl went with me.

As my crew prepared to receive her aboard my ship, I told Amy, "I am going to introduce you to one of our Elders. Her name is Verin, but everyone calls her Grandma. She will help you through this." She is at Center three now and we are awaiting word from the Elders in Eldulf about going there for a voluval. I tld her that if, after the voluvol, she wished to remain free, we would see to it. I told her that after the voluval, if she wished to return to Ms. Adrelana, we would see to that as well. Trust has been placed in us by all parties involved and we intend to honor their wishes. These are not easy thing to take on and they test our values. I do not covet returning a slave to a holder, but I covet less the prospect of denying a person the self-determination that is their right as a human.

I am also learning that some slaves love their masters and some masters love their slaves. I may be eaten alive for saying that, but it is what it is. Ms. Adrelana says that one day, Amy will be free and given what she needs to make her own way in the world. Call me naive, but I believe her words.

Now we wait to hear from the Elders in Eldulf.
