This is not quite accurate as the 'Augmented' drones will not be receiving the 2%/lvl bonus for mining drone specialization. See Fozzie's original post.

The Augmented Mining Drones will still be marginally better even at mining drone specialization 5. With a 2% bonus the 33*10% will give T2 mining drones a rate of 36.6m3 at Mining Drone specialization 5 compared to the augmented 37m3.

There are so many types of mining drones now... but only one salvage drone.

why do we need t2 salvage drones?

I mean, did we need t2 mining drones? or t2 combat or logistics drones?

or for that matter, t2 guns and t2 ships?

... we need t2 salvage drones because:

A) yes, there's only one variety of them, and that is the only drone for which that is true.
B) because t1 salvage drones are fairly underpowered and it'd be nice to have another reason to train the skill to L5 besides to make them SLIGHTLY better than terrible at salvaging.
C) as others have already said, to better salvage elite/advanced player wrecks and faction NPC wrecks, similar to how the salvager II module works vs. the salvager I module.

Salvaging 5 is a great skill to have if you enjoy salvaging. CCPlz make Salvage Drone Operation 5 just as meaningful a train by introducing Salvage Drone IIs + Salvage Drone Specialization skill.

Or more precisely, the augmented ones already ARE receiving that bonus per level, so they're not getting anything additional in the March update.

Sum up: All varieties of mining drones except t1 and t2 got the buff in November, all varieties of ice drones except t1 got the buff in November... meaning t2 ice drones used the spec skill in November... but t2 mining drones did NOT use the spec skill in November... because CCP didn't want people in deep null to complain they suddenly couldn't use their t2 mining drones due to a new skillbook they had to have. It's been 4 months now and finally t2 mining drones are going to be treated equal to their new little sisters, t2 ice drones. Huzzah!
