im not arguing for or against MT here, just against the quote above. I dont' want to make too many straw men, but some examples:

circa 1940 the German public largely embraced a new political ideaology. You could say 'everyone adopted it.' We know how that one ended.

around the year 2000 everyone adopted myspace. How is that working out right now?

It might be the 'current model' but this is a generation gap issue:

there was a time when computer games had no internet connection. As a result games were brought out as a 'finished product.' Name one game in the last year that hasnt had a patch?

Then you had the situation where a game would come out, you would pay once for it, and after that any new maps, mods or patches were free of charge. Think of well known FPS franchises that support this practice currently?

And now we arrive here:

1. buy unfinished product.
2. patch product.
3. buy downloadable content.

I watch the friends in my PS3 list when I log on to see what they are playing. Almost without exception this is how it has looked in the last couple of months:

'online playing Fifa12'
'online playing BF3'
'online playing MW3'
'online playing Skyrim'

The generation has arrived that the games company have been manipulating towards for years:

they buy each new 'big' release and play it until the next one arrives. They have no game loyalty so a game that becomes obviously unbalanced or glitchy after a couple of months no longer matters because the players have already moved on to the next game. The large publishers love this. You can almost hear the sound of the money piling up in their bank accounts.

The hope for the future is this:

There is an increasing divide between gamers at this point in time:

One camp will buy everything that comes out, pay for extra content and want quick gratification/low attention playing.
the other camp buy their games selectively, want a finished product and value for money.

Its my belief that sooner or later a games company will form that advertises directly to the second group - the money might not be as good but it will be regular and they will retain customers much better.

'the system everybody has adopted' is the same as the McDonalds system - you are paying them to make you fat. You are paying for a product that looks great but on closer inspection contains nothing that is good for you. You have adopted a system that is designed from the ground up to take as much from you as possible and make someone else richer.

seems to me 'everybody' isnt that clever tbh.

Per HOUR?!

You must mean per day or month...

30 min maintenance per day on setup that churns out over 100m per day.

Comparing a PC MMO to a console game is stupid.

Console games have a distinct lifespan.

they do. like all my ps2 games which i still have, which i STILL play today. DDR to keep in shape ftw.

Consoles have a TON more users in the pool that can play games. Truth be told, and i hate to hurt peoples feelings on here, your average gamer is NOT a pc gamer but a console gamer. weather it be ps3, xbox, psp, any nintendos, you get the idea.

MMOs have lifespans as well. take it from someone whose been playing mmos since the 90s. i've seen many mmos appear and burn. some even burn out before you created your first WoW character. others have continued to live on. Good ones stay, Bad ones die. As long as DUST is able to transfer onto the next gen consoles AND is good, it will live.

this whole notion of console gamers having the attention span of a goldfish can easily be thrown right back at pc mmo players. the proof is in the flood hype and mass migrations to whatever the flavor of the month is. ex. starwars:TOR. wow in space, literally.

So basically, you only have to pay about $20 for a potentially great game, and you yourself will never have to pay any of these microtransactions since you have your own isk from eve to use...

I'm not sure its going to be as simple as that. I suspect they will have their own kind of "golden tanks/ammo/missiles/guns etc" that will be Microtransaction $ only. I'm willing to be proven wrong when we get the details but I'm not getting those kind of vibes from the pay system. And lets face it, CCP proved last summer they had been talking to quite possibly the most innept "industry experts" in the gaming world about how to do :microtransactions: and I'm not convinced Dust 514 can survive that touch.

Hmmm, not wanting to support pay-to-win :microtransactions: in a CCP owned game = arrogant childish pride now, is that you CCP Zinfandel.

I'm pretty sure there will continue to be plenty of games for somebody prepared to spend cash on standalone titles and subscription games and as I've mentioned before - I do like the way World of Tanks runs its model and they have had plenty of money from me. I'm just not convinced CCP understands :microtransactions: and the free to play model enough to deliver something similar (leaving aside the fact that I really don't want to encourage the contamination of the Eve sandbox from it.)

So my microtransaction games are likely to remain WOT and maybe that new Battletech game in production. I'd like to keep Eve as my subscription game and not have it ruined by "industry experts" trying to follow what "everyone else" is doing.

The True Knowledge is that nothing matters that does not matter to you, might does make right and power makes freedom
