You can scrub the traffic through a router farm dedicated to doing just that, using complex algorithms to mostly separate the bad and drop it while still sending the good on it's way.

So what's the overhead of these "complex algorithms"?

Packet or cost overhead?

First, zero. Second, hard to tell. I'm sure CCP has looked into it and could give you a better idea than I can. I dont know solid figures.

I'm to understand its very costly to hire anyone that can actually deliver. You're talking some incredibly expensive equipment coupled with nearly as expensive support.

My company has been developing our own in house solution to blunt the costs and we're hoping to roll out a product mid-next year. I was told there was no way we'd pay what bringing in an effective solution would cost, and my company makes at least a million to every one CCP dollar.

Couldn't log in last night, same again today. Sad

Have you tried turning it off and on again CCP ?
Failing that, let Tuxford have a go at fixing it.

Edit:- Also just found out eve-mail doesn't work when tranquility is down.....the orange mail symbol on the forums with mail you can't get to makes downtimes even worse.

So apparently more people use the launcher than I had expected. Even more surprising is the amount of so-called bittervets....

oh pooh, I started this week, hope this does not happen, I really need to do my missions and do skills, *crys* Who is this happening, who is attacking us, can we stop them, what are they doing it for? What do they want? Is this illegal, can we swop servers or redirect them to a dead end?

I started playing MMO's when Ultima Online came out.

What amuses me is that the posts regarding downtime have not changed in almost 20 years. LOL.

When EQ came out it would go down for 3 days at a time. Some dealt with it better than others of course.

But even after all these years and a significant increase in the general knowledge of how the internet works we still have the same posts:

1. "I hope we're going to be compensated for this."

2. "I'm going to sue them."

3. "Restart your computers."

Amazing.

Downtime just got extended another half hour (to 12:30 GMT).

I give up. I'm going to bed. Empty skill queue be damned.

Not sure how I feel about compensation for just one day. But either way. It's not outrageous to expect compensation when you haven't provided a certain product to those who have paid for it. A small helping of unalocated SP would be a good gesture. You'd still have whiners. But thier going to whine no matter what.

But like I said. Worse case scenario, timewise, most anybody has lost is a days worth of skill point training. So compensation may be negligible anyway.

I was bummed about the extended downtime. Then I grabbed a bottle of whisky and suddenly things are looking up. Take your time CCP, take your time.

All sorts of places, you have to remember the average PC owner is a clueless moron that thinks the screen is the computer and the beige box is just the modem.

at a guess some of it will be free 'extra' software bundled with :-

RMT transactions
'Free' game hacks
certain online 'pill' purchases

Exactly. DDoS is such a mundane, everyday predictable attack, you can just pick up a security appliance like this Checkpoint CPAP-DP4412 and drop it into your rack.

Will it work? For this last amateurish attack, yeah, it might be all you'll need. If not - as I've stated before - there's dozens of other highly effective strategies you can deploy. European castle, Asian castle, pre-filtering through your gateway load balancers (if you deploy load balancers), targeted stateful packet inspection from your primary firewall, or your secondary firewall, or both, etc.

Easy, yes. Cheap, no. That Checkpoint appliance alone runs about USD 70K. You can almost buy a Tesla for that.

It's an absurd notion that you can't utterly defeat a script kiddy DDoS attack. Amazon.com is victimized by DDoS all the time and it's never down. Microsoft.com is the most hacked/attacked site on the internet and it has been for 20 years, but it's never down. Never. They couldn't care less about DDoS attacks because they've deployed many layers of defenses against it. Microsoft.com was happy to have a Bill Gates budget to do it, though.

There's real reasons why your Eve character doesn't do /dance.

exactly my point in all this.

The DDoS mitigation level is proportional to how fat your wallet is.

Wish this DDOS'r would use his botnet to target someone who deserves it. But I'm having trouble of thinking of who that would be.

I discourage running with scissors.
